Thanks for the info Von. Id have to look up a few YouTube videos on how to re-lace the wheels, but I'm down for the challenge.

Basic rundown of what you're up against. Again, not difficult just tedious. Take a couple good pics of the wheels before you disassemble them to use as a guide for re-lacing.

BFT here is another link that I found extremely helpful my build. if you are visual like i am, the parts explosions make things much easier

Thanks Mayor! I did print out the service manual, but it doesn't have the exploded views consolidated like this.

The carb rebuild kit came in today. Comes with new jets, but doesn't have any numbers stamped in. I'm assuming they are "stock" but I can use some gauge pins and compare with my original jets.

This brings back memories. My very first motorcycle was a stripped down '74 Cb125 I bought off a classmate in 7th grade for $50. I wanted a dirt bike to ride with my friends, who had Yz250s and Rm465s and such. You can imagine how lopsided the races were, but with some pilfered XL and CL parts it made for a decent scrambler.
I loved that bike and, after replacing the timing chain, rode the hell out of it for a couple years until I got an actual dirt bike. Then a car. Then stopped riding at all for 20 years. If decent Cb125 weren't commanding 1200 to 1500 around here I would try to buy back that piece of my youth.
I think genuine patina is great. Not bashed and rusted, but lived in. If you decide to go for a freshly painted look, I'd try to buy your tank off you.

Sounds like good memories indeed! My first bike was a 80' YZ50. My dad had it either bored or stroked (couldn't remember all the details) to be a 70cc. Power band on there used to scare the piss out of me as a kid. Sadly I sold it a few years ago. Here is the last picture I have of it prior to a minor rebuild.

Anyways, my only uncertainty is if I keep the patina, what do I do for the seat/rear fender? I've got the stock stuff still. Chrome is in decent shape, but I want a slimmer profile so I was planning on swapping it out. I guess if I just go with black then have the old/new look would still fit.

Carb rebuilt. Once things get running I'll likely clean up the outside some more. Although maybe not. This ain't a show bike....

Well. I need a new timing chain.... It was super loose, more so than a worn chain. I did some Googling and found that on the "newer" 2 piece heads the cam sits a little lower. That ends my day for now. I'll be ordering a new chain soon.

Well I haven't ordered a new cam chain yet, but started looking around. Most of the ones I've seen appear to be fully closed loops (no master link) that are preset for the stock cam/crank distance. Anyone have any recommendations of where to get a chain w/link so I can size it right? I thought about ordering one for the 76 and up models because they should have the two-piece heads where the cam sits lower. I just hate having to return stuff....

Well, the wife is going out with her girl friends tonight so I'll have some 100% dedication time to the bike this evening ;D I'm taking the frame down to my dad's shop and will try to fit it in the bead blaster. If anything, I have some engine mounts that need cleaning and perhaps I'll get the frame cut and prepped for a seat hoop.

As far as the new cam chain goes, I found a handy calculator to figure out how many links I need for my configuration, http://www.botlanta.org/converters/dale-calc/sprocket.html

Cheers!

Due to time constraints and budget, I cheated and just bead blasted the rims and painted with ceramic wheel paint (satin black). Not too bad.... Decent enough for selling the bike once completed. I'm taking this as a learning process for the next build. Practice, practice, practice. Right?

Cam chain finally showed up! Apparently this is a chain for a little scooter, thus the long length. It is the right size however and includes the master link.

Hey folks. Well I haven't been keeping up with posts lately so here is a shotgun of pictures with the latest.....

Wheel bearings.... I also installed to fork seals.

New rubber bands.

So here is the latest mock. Stock handle bars upsidedown just for fun :) I'll be throwing on some motocross ones eventually. Need to fix the headlight bracket and remake my little stone guard ( it's a bit too backyard garage-y even for me!)

Other than making the carb adapter for the new head, the engine is finished. The rest of the work is general assembly and cosmetic shit.
