CL175 sporty-resto

Been Around the Block
Hey everyone! I used to own a cl175 a couple years back and have regretted selling it ever since. So, one day i got a wild hair and decided to put an ad out on CL looking for a cb or cl 175.

A few weeks went by and finally someone contacted me with a fairly decent deal on a CL175 that he couldnt get running right. One week, 100 miles on the truck, and $1100 bucks later i finally had my own CL175 again!

Picked it up in the rain too, so the test ride was cold, wet, and short. here it is in the back of the truck

So, first thing was first: I needed to tear it all apart, and prep the swingarm for a monoshock...

I'm kidding!

First things first, time to see why it doesn't run right! My plans eventually for it are to do some slight cosmetic modifications, but overall leave it stock (and able to be put back to bone stock form.

Re: CL175 pretty mild

I had learned a few things from the last CL I owned, and I had retained most of it. Last CL had some serious carb issues that I was constantly fighting with, and eventually was the reason I gave up and sold it. I feel I've grown my mechanical skills tremendously over the last several years, and I vowed I wouldn't let any carb issues get me down. Well, this thing has carb issues. So...

First up, theres only one clamp on one side of the intake boots, and its that crappy spring clip thingy. Put hose clamps on, and it improved a little. Still not running well, but a little better.

I pull them off and start cleaning them up. Lo and behold, every jet and bolt has been replaced in these puppies, which I take as both a good sign and a bad sign.

Check the floats - the float level is off.

Also, while unscrewing the pilot, I nudged the main jet and it wiggled... Wasn't even fully screwed in!

After all that, I put the carbs back on, and fire it up. Runs much better, but not great. I pull the airboxes off, and check the slides. One slide moves when you twist the throttle, the other waits till half throttle to move... sigh... second problem found, and quickly remedied. Runs better but still not great.

4 spark plugs, lots of fine adjustments, and 2 weeks later (I'm a very busy student) and it runs great!

So, onto the next thing!

Re: CL175 pretty mild

Next I moved to the points. I dont trust points on used bikes unless I replace them myself. Good thing too, since they old points crumbled apart when I removed them

New points in, and timed. It purrs like a kitten!

An oil change later and it was ready for a test ride.

Re: CL175 pretty mild

I work at CycleGear here in Tucson, AZ and as such I have access to several parts suppliers. So, here's my list of things I bought/ordered:

- Emgo 6.25in headlight (H4 bulb)
- Speedmetal H4 LED headlight kit
- Headlight visor (dont judge! haha)
- Euro bars
- Rally grips in black
- Speedo cable
- Tach cable
- Brake cable
- Clutch cable
- brake shoes front and rear
- new RK chain
- 40t aluminum rear sprocket
- 13t front sprocket
- 2.5in bikemaster rear tail light
- Front and rear turnsignals

A couple of these things I had to get on Ebay, but that's the general gist of it. The tires are 6 months old thanks to the PO, so that's one less thing I have to worry about.

-Onto the cosmetics!-

I removed the seat from the bike and brought it down to my upholstery guy here. I use this local business called Pancho's upholstery, this guy does top notch work! I literally brought him the seat and a cardboard cutout of the profile I wanted. A week later it was done, and exactly what I asked for.

I also found my old side covers from the last CL. Even though the color doesn't match, I decided id use them anyways

So far, this is where it sits:

I still have the brakes, chain and sprocket left to do.

Re: CL175 pretty mild

So this thing has paper filter elements, and Honda doesn't make them anymore. At some point, I figure ill have to make my own. Any suggestions on how to do this? I've done simple tube type filters with the uni foam like the KZ750, and CT90. Has anyone built their own filters for the CL175?

Id like to stay away from pods if at all possible

Think i have the air filter thing pretty much figured out.

One of the issues i had with this bike was that the previous previous owner cut the heat shield to access a bolt.
voila

And a close up shot of the hack job
IMAG0361_zpsmbcd9zfk.jpg

Why he chose to cut that is beyond me. Its RIGHT NEXT to the bolt that you use to take off the heat shield so you can access that bolt! arg!

Well, I scoured Ebay for a while trying to find a decent heat shield. Those that I found that were in good condition were kind of pricey, and those that were cheap were in rough shape.

Until I stumbled across one that I hadnt caught before (or it had just been posted) and i snatched it up at a steal!

Arrived today, and here it is!

And installed
IMAG0363_zpsa45gvund.jpg

So pretty! now I'm just waiting for my oil seals and gaskets to show up so I can get this leak taken care of and see whats up with the kickstart.

I had a fairly bad oil leak and decided I'd get all new oil seals and all new gaskets to install...

There's so much rtv on this thing it's ridiculous! It's going to take me hours to reverse this amateur hour mechanics work that was done to it :(

Very Nice 8) CL175,I always liked the blue ones better than the maroon they had;is that a 71 or 72' ?
ebay has been real good for buyers lately and you can get a deal.

Too bad I didn't see this sooner I have a very nice pair of heat shields that need a new home.

I absolutely love your seat. I hope lots of people see that seat and realize that you dont have to hack a bike and slap a skateboard on it for it to look good. Well done, I will be following to see other great and practical mods.

Good job. You've made some nice subtle touches. I imagine it feels good to have the same bike again, but this time with a bit more experience and clear game plan. Now I'm just waiting to see that mono shock.

Just kidding!

Not to worry scott. CL175 mono shock will again one day, in the not so distant future, be coming to a theatre near you.

It is a 72. The owner claimed it was a 71, but the title and tube said otherwise.

Oh man! I didnt even think to post here asking about heat shields. Eh, oh well, lesson learned. I really like the way the seat came out too. I really didnt want to hack this thing up, and honestly, the seat is still comfortable even with the foam cut down.

It does! Theres something about this little buzzer that is so different than my other bikes. I dont know if its the pure mechanical aspect, or the small cc's that do it, but it is blast!

Well, amateur hour continues... So far, both side covers had no gasket, only RTV.

Behold:

IMAG0364_zpsfwpuvl7h.jpg

If there is motorcycle porn, this is what you get when you find motorcycle STD's! There's so much RTV, that there's even some on the clutch basket. I don't think a single gasket was used, which is insane seeing as how I ordered a gasket set for cheap. My biggest worry is that I can see RTV coming out of the split between the cases. Also, I now know why the kick start doesn't work, its just an empty shaft... sigh...

Actually I lied, there was a gasket used, but the old gasket wasn't entirely removed

IMAG0365_zpstywsjmma.jpg

That's in the middle of cleaning it. This is also where it was leaking a bunch of oil.

I figure im goin to be putting in some work, and this isnt just going to be a quick swap in of gaskets like I was planning. So, might as well start doin other stuff, right?

First up, polishing:

IMAG0367_zpsxwdoefll.jpg

After sanding

IMAG0368_zpscs79tcfu.jpg

After polishing.

I'm just going to leave the scratches on there since they are pretty deep. Oh yeah, those are from the brake pedal stop being adjusted out so it hit the cover. I'm going to give my self whiplash with as much head shaking that I'm doing.

Those covers I have are maroon, which clashes with the blue. So, what do you guys think of this?
IMAG0369_zpse5rzvsjz.jpg

I was inspired by the CB1100 with its silve side covers. I think its kinda cool

IMAG0379_zpsmin9x3xo.jpg

More RTV. This time its black RTV. Its kind of hard to see, but theres actually RTV on the chain, and the magnet.

IMAG0373_zpscjp4khag.jpg

New JT 14 tooth front sprocket is going to go in, since ive got it open.

Also, since the bike is down, might as well rip off the rear sprocket...
IMAG0374_zpsabbkdoue.jpg

IMAG0375_zpsikmtkysz.jpg

IMAG0377_zpsof6b3fbq.jpg

And throw on my fancy new aluminum rear sprocket. Ohhhh, shiny!

I had to modify the sprocket bolts just a tiny bit. One of the mating edges was too wide, and needed to be trimmed down
IMAG0376_zpsjqookglx.jpg

And speaking of shiny. I painted my side covers and mocked up the polished filter cover
IMAG0372_zpslqwpzlsy.jpg

Well, while I had my head by the exhaust ports (pulling the crush gaskets) I saw there was some fresh oil on the cylinders. Upon further inspection, it is leaking from the head gasket. Now, if the side covers are any indication, I'm sure it's either an old gasket, or the old one want properly scrapped off. Looks like I'll bee using more gaskets from this pack than I was expecting

Thanks trek!

Quick update, the muffler has some cancer towards the back that is making me question having it fixed. I can probably get an aftermarket muffler from my work cheaper than the repairs would run or a used one will run.

Maybe I'll run the 2 pipes into 1 and a single muffler
