Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Mounted the headlight bracket tonight.. kinda. I cut down the stock lower mount and drilled a new mounting hole. moved it down a little more than an inch. I used the stock bracket that attaches to the bucket and used longer bolts with spacers in the stock top mounts. I can go lower later without much trouble (I'll probably want to go lower). also, the spacers kinda look like shit, so I'll do a better job on the finished product.

I drilled the mounting holes for the seat/tail, but need longer bolts to actually mount it up. Soulgrindnj is a big guy and needs to sit farther back than the seat would allow if it were right up next to the back of tank. So I moved it back, elongated the shock mount holes, clearanced the front sides and drilled the mounting holes in the frame. Moving the seat back means there's going to be an open area between the seat and the tank. no idea how this is going to look when its completed, but I'm rolling with it for now. I also had to move the electronics back so that they wouldnt be visible in the now open area. I threw some rubber blocks under the seat for mock-up to make sure the electronics tray would fit in their new location.

shot from the back of the tail looking fwd at the electronics tray. I still need to secure the back of the tray with a self tapping sheet metal screw, but it'll clear.

Edit: god this bike looks dirty as hell.

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Ohgodohgodohgodohgodohgod. Soulgrind kinda settled on a color scheme and won't let go of it. He wants his bike to have a kawi green frame and low-gloss black body work. Don't get me wrong, I was moderately appauled at first, but now I've seen a bike with those colors and, and...oh god! Its so much worse than I thought it would be!

I like where your head is at. both of you. I'll get drunk and spray it whatever color i want. thats what you guys were recommending, right?

laugh.

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

picked up the bike, rolled it out side and soda blasted the motor today. it kinda worked. then it started raining. I'll finish it another day, hopefully tomorrow. Before pic:

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

soda blasting kinda worked, but there is water in my air tank and the soda keeps clogging up. Ive tried acids and brushes and steel wool and nothing is working as well as i want it to. Today i finally had enough, broke out the angle grinder w/ a wire wheel and got some shit done.

now ive got to figure out how to get to the front and back of the motor. my 7" angle grinder isnt exactly compact.

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Borrowed a power washer and sprayed down the front and back of the motor. Close enough I guess. I just can't get to it with a wheel.

Sprayed the frame and fork lowers tonight, as well as some small parts. Took pics but they're not uploading to photobucket for some reason. Ill post them tomorrow.

I have to get more flat black to paint the swinger and hubs/spokes. Soulgrindnj wants the rims kawi green, as well as the kick start and some engine detail. He wants the front half of the tank to be white and fade to black on the back half. He said its on one of the monster energy cars. I think I'm going to paint the motor some gun metal like color, and the side covers black so the kawi logos can be green.

The exhaust is soaking in phosphoric acid right now and cleaning up nicely.

Tomorrow I'm going to do some bondo work to the tank, fab up the real headlight mount and maybe paint some more parts.

Soulgrind has been slacking at picking up paint, so I took a couple spare random cans I had laying around and did this:

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Painted the spokes and hubs of the stock wheels last night and today. I had previously soaked the wheels in acid and they didn't look that bad to me so I'm going to use them (not sure if I mentioned that before). Tapped off the rims and tires, sprayed the hubs and spokes with duplicolor caliper paint. Sprayed the rear sprocket, rear brake lever, front brake disk and speedo gear the same cast color of the engine. They look a hell of a lot better than they did. Have to take some paint thinner to some spots on the rim that got some overspray on it somehow.

Turns out that the rear brake material has come unbonded from the shoes. Damn, time for new ones.

I sprayed the stock turn signals flat black, same as the frame. I'm going to mount the fronts on the stock location and the rears in front of the top shock mounts.

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Did some more work on this thing. Threw the rear tire on, got all the seat mounts finished, painted the stock blinkers, installed the carbs and pod filters. Not much, I know, but its coming along. Would've had the front end on, but I ordered the wrong allballs bearing kit. Speaking of which, anyone need a 22-1009 all balls kit for half price? Here are some pics.

Re: '80 KZ750 Twin - Project: <yet to be named>

Ok, so the stock chain has like 20 broken links. great. ordered a new chain last week, it came in today along with the new steering stem bearings. I decided to make sure the new bearings fit, which they did. so I threw the forks in and front wheel on. The bars wont fit because the tops of the fork tubes interfere with the bar risers. I need to raise the bike up and slide the forks down a bit to make it work. kinda sucks because i think i like the stance where it is. might go the clip-ons route if i can find a really cheap pair (anyone??).
