Project GOLDWING, a 76 GL1000

Thanks Cuba!

I will get the frame and swing arm all prepped for powder coating this weekend.

Now i just need to decide the color scheme. I was thinking of something a bit different like gold metal flake powder coat on the frame and swingarm and using Marrakesh Brown Metallic on the tank and seat pan sections.

I think that would be a cool look, let me know if you guys have any suggestions.

Doesn't that clevis on the swingarm end of the shock need to be rotated 90 degrees in order not to bind as the swingarm moves?

+1 didn't notice that the first look, that may snap right off the first ride. there are circular motions involved.

I had thought of that and the more I looked at it and did some reading I think its going to work just fine. I also had the heck welded out of it so it should be plenty strong. it it doesnt work I can make spacer that will turn it to the other way.

Heres where it is currently.

Cool, it's not the swinger I worry about, but the alloy clevis on the shock itself. I am not sure it won't snap at the prongs. That being said, I am not an engineer etc. so I would just get someone to check it for you, these bikes are not feather weights as light as they feel once you are riding. Aside from that she is looking pretty good.

Cheers

I did a really technical drawing to illistrate what I was talking about, as the swingarm pivots and the shock copresses it is in an arc and I think the clevis will be stressed in the orientation it is in now where at 90 Deg flipped it rolls on the bushing as the shock is pushed in.

Update,

Got the motor going back in it now. Still have to rebuild carbs.
Also put in a heim joint to give the rear part of the shock the pivot point it needed. The theaded shank of the joint is rated for 9k pounds so that should be more than overkill as a mounting point. It also does feel a lot better when sitting on it and getting the spring to work a little.
Thanks Maritime for the info and help, I think its much safer now.

More pics soon,

Thanks Maritime and MrPriceisRight, I appreciate it. Hopefully it will come together very soon. More pics to follow.

A lot of frame work, but... what about those carbs? You'll find many oldwing builders going to single-carb setups for both reliability and performance. If the frame work really does improve the handling, a simpler carb setup might improve the riding experience equally.

Super cool southbora! Where do you put your gas?

Indeed, what have you done for a gas tank?
And how does she ride/handle?
And some more photos, please?

Nice bike!

Very nice build so far, have you gave any thought to the exhaust yet ? I've seen many GL1000 builds an not one has tried a 4 into 1 exhaust an can't figure out why. Maybe I need to get a 76 thru 78 GL1000 an try my hand at a GL cafe build.... Wayne
