So I have this cb360 engine.... (first full engine tear down)

Back story (questions in next paragraph if you want to skip this part): so I bought this cb360 last winter for seven hundred bucks. I got it running (poorly) when I got it home and decided the carbs sucked and moved on to the next project... like you do when you have like 6 bikes and ADD. fast forward to late summer, I randomly order some mikuni vm's from speedmotoco for it. I put them in and tune them for like three days and finally got them tuned!! So I took the old girl out and she ran like a champion!... for like 2 laps around the track till she came to an abrupt stop. I most not have tightened that last valve adjuster down tight enough because it decided it would rather live in another part of my engine, like, the bottom. It got into a fight with the cam chain on the way down and kicked his ass (to pieces). So I pulled the engine out of the bike and did something I've never done. I took it completely apart, split the case and everything. turns out, it was a good idea because not only was the adjuster in the bottom but so were lots of pieces of the cam chain. I'm in the process of cleaning now. since it's pretty much just a bunch of aluminium blocks now, I want to give it a fancy shine before reassembly.

So now that this motor is completely apart, are there any upgrades or fancy things I can do to this thing before putting it back together? you know, stuff to make it go faster, be cooler and get me more chicks? I read about the cam chain tensioner so I'm gonna do that, should I bore up to something? I've read about the gs850 piston swap and it's limited availability. I've also read there were some other problems with this engine but no particulars. and I think I read somewhere that someone was doing 70 in second gear on one of these things.. I could get into that. Anyway, any words of advice, helpful hints or tricks, sage like wisdom, asshole type comments about how I'm dumb for buying a cb360 or whatever are all welcome.

First tip: before buying any replacement engine parts on ebay or whatever...just ask. One of us probably has whatever it is (if not a box full - unless it's cam chain tensioners)

Second tip: search for CrazyPJ's posts. Read everything. Twice. Go to google, put in his name, and read everything he's posted on every other forum. Twice.

Third: Do the same thing for Sonreir's posts

That will get you started :)

70mph in second gear is my bike. I have about two grand sunk into the engine alone.

+2mm custom made, high compression, forged aluminum pistons from Arias
Decked head (running at 12.1:1 static compression)
CCed combustion chambers
Megacycle road race cam (extra .040" lift and 21° duration)
RD valve springs and aluminum retainers
+1mm Kibblewhite valves (intake and exhaust)
3 angle valve job
Low profile bronze valve guides
Mild porting (mostly clean up of the casting marks and some light sanding)
Custom made velocity stacks
"Long" exhaust
Early CL360 transmission swap
Polished rocker arms
Barnett clutch and springs (only have the springs installed, saving the clutch pack until after I burn out the OEM one)
18/33 final drive ratio

Here's a bit of eye candy...

Unless your racing you don't need the high lift cams and heavy duty valve springs that go with them but a 2mm overbore is really worthwhile, the difference in performance really noticeable (probably because intake ports are way too big for stock motor?)
I would do the absolute minimum on intake but open the exhaust port up a bit to increase flow

thanks guys! I'm about to get stalker intimate with you two.... or at least your posts.... or just start stalking you.

You're just showing off. ::)

I got mine over 105 mph this afternoon on the way to a museum gig, but I only have about $200 in my engine- CB500 HD clutch springs, CJ360 oil pickup, ported oil orifice and PJ's carb work. Everything else is labor. That is all. Really, it's my custom '67 Mercury Cougar rear taillight and my stealth figure that makes it go fast.

I'm the wrong person to ask for support. I'm a chronic enabler.

"Come on. Just one more engine mod. I won't tell anyone."

;D

Love my 360 also.....I think there are more than expected....

I don't know why 360's are so addictive? (I've got 4 plus couple of 250's)
I had 4 CJ 250's one was stolen few months ago, one stolen few years ago (the 250 overbored to 400 was stolen :( )

so whats the best way to clean an engine once you have it completely apart? it was really dirty and I probably should have done more cleaning before tear down but here we are. Im guessing you dont want to get your cylinders wet but you do want to get all the crud out of the fins.

so will the full strength brake cleaner be bad on the insides? or is soda blasting bad for the inside? Is either safe for where the gaskets go?
