Again? I hope they win this time. Last time I was in Pittsburgh was the monday AFTER the Superbowl, and it was a very quiet day at work.
 
Just joined this website because of your project. I have an 82 Maxim 750 I have been thinking about doing. I have to say, your bike is the coolest looking cafe racer I have seen so far! I will probably steal your ideas!!
 
Well I'm BACK w/my XJ 650 cafe project & its been sitting this winter. About to have my baby & had no time to work on old girl but I'm motive to get her up & running before the baby, my son come in this world & demands all my time, which hes worth it of course. But other than that standby for some updates. Will post some pictures ASAP!

I'll be watching. My 750 is running already and I ride to work all the time and around on free time. But it looks like an old mans bike. I'm not that old yet. My searching found your bike and now I'm hooked on how it will look as it goes along, and especially when it's finished.
 
So I started with making some simple purchases to get the ball rolling on this 3-years of sitting in the garage project. I purchased a petcock vlv, gas cap and some material for the seat from JoAnn fabric. I use for the seat pan some left over metal from a washer that die on me.

I started by using the seat foam from the original seat and then started cutting the foam with an electric carving knife (everyone should have one in their garage). After 5 days or so of trimming and sanding the seat is ready for fabric.

Following the purchase of the this dark brown vinyl fabric with fleet like material on the back from JoAnn which was $9 bucks for a yard which give me more than enough fabric to use for like 3 seat covers in the future. I outline the fabric and began cutting it. I hand sown the seat and it took every bit of 7-days to complete this project all while working a full time job.

Here's a few pics of the seat with fabric. I end up not going with the E6000 adhesive and drill the holes in the bottom of the seat pan and riveted the material to the pan for a tight fit.

The seat looks good for my first seat ever sown by hand. It could look better if I paid someone but what fun that would be? NONE! The seat cost me total $9 bucks, I already had a rivet gun and rivets so that was no cost. The only thing that cost me was my time and that my friend is priceless.

In the last picture you can see the turn signals I added to the rear of the bike. I just have to configure the wiring assembly.

I took the carbs off and began the process of cleaning these bad boys and let me tell you the previous owner did a number on these carbs. Meaning did not use the proper screw drivers to remove screws, they were stripped and hard to remove. With a little added pressure and patience I was able to remove the screws and jets. Thanks to a XJBike.com forum this gave me the confindence to clean the carbs myself.

I will need to take these carbs to a repair facilty to get them rejetted and tune because I made some serious changes to the bike; going from stock air box to pod filters and dual exhuast to 4-1 set up.

Brake upgrade: I went from the stock brake reservoir to a 1999 R6 Yamaha reservoir. I end up stripping the screw on the stock reservoir trying to put some brake fluid in the reservoir and decide it was time to upgrade.

I ran into an issue with the upgrade and the wiring connection didn't match so I went to Auto Zone and purchased some blade connectors and that now that is complete. The only issue now that I have is the brake has no tension on the brake lever when engaged. If anyone has any advice on this issue it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

What diameter is the new M/C and what diameter was the OEM unit? How do they compare with sizes recommended by Michael Mercury Morse at Vintagebrake.com?

Once you are sure you have an appropriate M/C, bleed it.
 
I thought it was corrosion so I was going to sand and paint it at a later time once I got the MC working. Looks like i'll be taking it apart to located the issue.
 
BTW, the size is usually (but not always) cast into the master cylinder body. It will be something like 5/8 or 14 or 19 etc Obviously some are MM sizes and some are metric.

Let's back this up a step or two - did you bleed the brakes after you put the new MC on? You know you have to get ALL the air out or it wont work, right?


You may not need to totally disassemble the MC - you can probably just take the banjo bolt out and flush it out with brake cleaner.


BUT, after you re-connect it to the line you need to bleed the brakes completely.
 
Hey silverdollar how did you remove the grips on the bike? I have an 81 Maxim and I'm wanting new grips and clutch and front break grips what did you do?
