Crank bearing install the easy way

Here's a few pics and a video of installing crank bearings on a Honda XR600 crank, this method works on all sorts of bikes though.

Throw that crank in the freezer for a few hours, go drink some beer and scrape your gaskets or something.

Set the bearings on the stove for a minute or so,

Then quickly do this for both bearings, don't wait too long because that crank will start to warm up pretty quick, have everything all ready to go before you even get the crank out of the freezer.

You get this result without a press and no risk of damaging the crank trying to press the bearings on. The video was of the second bearing going on, I was on the wrong setting on the camera for the first one.

very nice! it really depends on the crank though; some have such tight tolerances that this method is necessary as well as using a press.

but absolutely... Heating and cooling of parts is often overlooked by people installing press fit parts.

Well, what do you guys think?

First of all, no need to put the crank into the freezer, unless you want condensed water on it when you put it out.
Secondly, heating the bearings on the hotplate carries the risk of annealing them (guess how I know), it's much
safer to put them into the ofen, where you can adjust temperature to some 120°C (250F).

Apart from that, nice hint!

Kind regards
