Norton Mutt Cafe Racer

Always make the best of what you have!
Why did I say a Norton Mutt, because that's what she is.
History:
Back in Nov. 2015 I traded my Harley Ironhead, for a uncompleted resto/mod 1965 Norton Atlas build.
Today I know she's put together from a 1969 Mercury Slimline feather-bed frame, 1965 750cc Atlas motor and a 1971 Commando gear box.
This is how she looked when I went and looked at her the first time, she stole my heart.

Here's how she looks today, but in the next few posts I'll take you back in time as she got finished off.

This weekend the sun came out and it felt so good so I pulled the old girl out for some fresh air.
It's just above freezing and I've got the chock pulled out.
https://youtu.be/ZZAxuQMuijY

So as you can see the main chain drive has been replaced with a belt drive and heave duty Commando clutch pack.
This eliminates the leaky side cove and reduces vibration.

To keep my pant leg out of the primary and keep everything legal, I reused the old cover but modded it some.

750 Atlas Motor and Commando gearbox are full rebuilds.
Engine has Commando Cylinders and valve up graded, new Rod Barrings, Super Blends,Ground Crank Journal and Balance to 78%. This has almost eliminated all higher RPM vibration and greatly improved performance.

The old stock carbs are also gone, I have gone with a single Mikuni 34mm card setup.

I did reconnect the handlebar chock control, just like the stock ones.

Bootsey said:
Man, that's a stunning machine.

Thanks, this isn't my 1st build so I've been able to learn a lot of things over the years, mostly be trial and error. This is the most expensive and labor intense build I have ever taken over/on.
The Norton is for me the iconic Cafe Racers and the bike I always wanted but couldn't afford for a Cafe build. I took me three builds and flips to go this level of bike.

The old Lucas Magneto was replaced with a more reliable Joe Hunt mag. The bike does not require a battery to run, but I do have a small one tucked behind the gear box to run the lights when the motor's not running.

On of the old school ways to get more speed out of a bike was to reduce weight and that is still a major part of any built should be. To do this you remove anything that isn't need and replace metal parts with aluminum or other light weight materials.

Replaced heavy metal fenders and braces with custom aluminum fenders ans supports
Replaced heavy metal engine/gearbox mounting plates with custom aluminum plates
Removed metal battery box, air box, oil tank and tool box, replaced with a center line racing fiberglass oil tank and small behind gearbox battery tray.

I've made a few seats in the past, but for this project I wanted the Traditional Norton solo hump seat.
I was able to locate a fabricator that would make a seat pad and cover to order (motorcycleseatsdirect.com), this gave me the opportunity to make a change like add red piping to match the tank.

The end product was spot on. I could have ordered a fully assembled seat but my old pan was still ok.

When I got the bike it came with stock pipes, big, heavy and ugly. There was no way I was going to use them for a Cafe build. A friend of mine had a Cocktail shaker exhaust on his 500 Norton and the sound blow me away, so I know exactly what I needed. So I went with up swing cocktail shaker exhausts with removable baffles. I found out very quickly I need to run the pipes with the baffles in, I got plenty of friendly hints from my neighbors!!

So yesterday I had the appraiser drop over to my house and check out my bike so I can get vintage insurance. The appraiser was Jim Danniels a well-known local vintage bike restores and builder, it was a real privilege to meet the man. We spent a lot of time just talking about vintage bikes and how modding than has become more accepted. Also got a few names of contacts for future goodies for my bike…

Jim liked my work and said it was tastefully do, it'll be going on the books as a 1968 Norton Mercury with a 750 motor upgrade. I will be getting the paperwork in a day or two from Jim, so I’ll be off to get her insured and on the road.

CONCLUSIONS

The 1968 Norton Mercury, also referred to (in various world markets) as a 650SS or Dominator, is arguably the most sought-after of the ‘Featherbed’ framed Norton twins that were in production from the late 1940’s through to as late as1980. Famed for their robust performance, superb Roadholder front forks and stout Featherbed frames, they were the darling of both the casual rider and Cafe-Racer crowd right from the get-go.

This particular 1968 Norton Mercury has benefitted from a careful, amateur restoration using upgraded, high-quality parts whenever possible. Both fit and finish are very good. Included are custom paint and powder coat, a fully rebuilt and balanced Atlas 750cc engine with belt drive primary, Joe Hunt magneto ignition and single Mikuni carburettor, custom seat, John Tickle rear set controls plus a long list of additional upgrades and improvements designed to enhance appearance, safety and performance. The owner has documented his restoration with a complete list of bills and receipts. Built in the traditional Cafe Racer style, the bike start’s, runs and rides like a new motorcycle and should, if maintained in its present condition, either hold or increase in value in years to come. Please note that while the official Ontario title may refer to this bike as a ‘rblt’, this means nothing when it comes to the true ‘current replacement value’. It is in fact a by-the-numbers correct 1968 Norton Mercury and I have appraised it accordingly.

After consulting a variety of sources including the NADA Vintage Motorcycle Value Guide, several vintage motorcycle sales publications and websites, both Bonham’s and Mecum’s recent vintage motorcycle auction results, and taking into consideration recent currency fluctuations, I have concluded that the current replacement value for this 1968 Norton Mercury is $9000.00 (plus any local fees and taxes).

So after calling around to get a quote for my Vintage Insurance I got a good price.
I was able to get full coverage and replacement value with Aviva Canada for $350 a year.
So as soon as the snow melts again I'll be off for the safety.

All hail the true original Café Racer......nice, very nice

Just as you all know, she will always be a on going project.
Here's a few things I still want to up date and add. but there is no time frame.
Aluminum spot faring

Twin lead shoe drum brake or better

Swept back pipes

So here is the scary part of the build:
For this build I was able to keep a detailed record of the cost and parts and some outside labor (engine work). The personal hour of labor are not add to this list and a few things I may have over looked.
