Hey guys!

I'm currently restoring a XS750 1T5 on which the PO fitted the later model electronic ignition.
I would like to test the charging curcuit. How do I go about?
The multimeter reads 14.2 volts when the motor runs, when the engine is revved just slighlty goes up and then back to 14.2 as soon as the revvs drop...is this normal?
Shouldnt the regulator keeo the volts lower?
Thanks in advance!

This is pretty much normal.

Most bikes will sit at around 13.5 at idle then go up with revs to 14.5 - 15v.

As long as it doesn't go over 16v you should be OK.

Thanks hillsy!
Just made a little research.

Everything over 14.9Volts will blow up the battery and means te reg unit doesnt work properly.
So it looks like its working properly.
Thanks!

It's meant to go beyond 14.2 and even as high as 14.5V to desulfatate the old school lead acid batteries and increase their life span.

If it puts out 14.2V under full load: Yes, but as it most likely will settle to around 13.8 to 14.0V, that's gonna be perfect then. Just remember not to run the bike for longer periods without the headlight on.
