Hello all,
I am new to your forum and excited to join. I have been riding for the last 5 years on my 2002 Honda Shadow Spirit 750 in upstate NY and have been loving the bike culture. I recently moved back to my hometown in Long Island and have been looking for a project bike and something a little smaller to putter around town with. I recently found this listing on craigslist for a CB200T and was wondering if the community thought that this was a good idea for a first project for a newbie. This is what the lister posted
For sale, my Honda Cb200t. It has 997 miles on it and NO RUST ANYWHERE. Was kept in a barn from 1974-2010, then someone drove it for a while then upgraded, since it's 200cc and can't do 80mph.

Gets 60mpg!

The engine turns over and has spark but it needs new carbs ($80 on ebay).

I bought it about a year ago and put a ton of new parts on it. (Rebuilt the carbs, new ignition coil, new high quality sports battery, comes with new tires). Bought it as a project so I could learn to fix it and honestly, I don't know why... I'm a gigging musician and I need a car.

No title, but in NYS, all you need is a bill of sale for this vehicle and then you submit it to the DMV and you get a new title in the mail.

No lowball offers. The only reason I'm selling it is because I need a vehicle NOW before my family's divorce goes through and the house I'm living in is sold.

Help me help you!

I really love the look of the fully restored CB200 and really want to start a collection of these smaller bikes. I also have one more question and that is that I am 6'3" and 230lbs and would like to hear if any other taller riders have had any experience with the comfort of riding one of these bikes in a stock condition.

I am confused. The ad says NO RUST and yet all the chrome is rusty and so is the tank. And it says it needs new carbs but I see carbs on it. What is wrong with it that the seller believes it needs new carbs to fix?

Doesn't look bad overall and seems pretty complete, but presumably not running so I don't understand the reference to needing a car. If it's not running he wasn't riding it.

How much is he asking for it and have you run a stolen vehicle check on it?

He is asking $750 and I haven't heard back from him yet. I will ask for VIN so I can do a stolen vehicle check. Is there a database that I can use to find out if the bike is stolen?

A police station

RUN, don't walk away from that bike and more importantly the seller.

Already mentioned that the bike looks VERY rusty, but the seller claims that it is rust free.
Next the seller wants to get credit for his investment into rebuilding the carbs, but then claims they need to be replaced? LOLWUT?

Seller is full of crap when he says that the no title thing is nothing to worry about.
In NYS EVERYTHING from 1973 on needs a TITLE to register on the road.
No title, no plates.
End of story.
There is no "oh they will give you a title" BS. Might be able to pay a few hundred bucks for a "title service" or play the VT title game. But this all is time and money. Why deal with that when the market is flooded with bikes that actually are owned by the sellers and there are no stories?

Without a title the bike is little more then a pile of parts.

At the end of the day it is WAY over priced.

Yes, at 230 pounds the CB200 will be worse then a moped.

Has paperwork. For 72 and older there is no title. Your 200 needs a title.
Scramblers are cooler then normal CBs.

See how a few extra bucks gets you a MUCH nicer base?

Hell I might go grab that!

This is a terrible idea, but if you are going to "do it wrong" at least end up with a semi desirable motorcycle.

thanks surffly. I really appreciate the info. I am not going to get into that one. His post seemed kinda shady. I really wanted my first restoration to be a Honda and I really like the 70's looks for some reason. I wanted to work on a two cylinder but based on my weight I think I am going to have to go for a 750. I am going to keep my eyes out for a CB750 that I can work on. Mostly I wanted something I can pull apart, clean, learn some things about carbureted engines, and polish and paint and be happy sitting down drinking a beer and watching the sun shine off my shiny old but new bike.

Hey man, don't be daunted by 4 cylinders! I've been working on my first build for a few months now which is also a CB750 (1981). It has definitely been a learning experience, I've loved working on it. And you'll be glad of those extra cc's even if you do have 2 extra carbs to rebuild!

Good luck with the hunt man and have fun
