How to tame a bull...weigh down his balls lol...

"The first true El Montadero (M70)had the redesigned frame and a wide ratio gearbox(4 speed). It also had the heaviest magneto flywheel(Electronic dual plug) ever fitted to a motorcycle, consequently it had broad smooth power." http://forum.ozvmx.com/index.php?topic=26472.0

Sweet!! I want my next build to be an enduro as well so I'm certainly going to follow along. Are you planning to do performance modifications or going straight 100% resto?

this one will be a restoration initially ...but who knows flywheels are interchangeable and so are a tuned exhaust systems. We learn by comparing and contrasting. :) Zeke said he is glad we started with 4 strokes because he said wow these two strokes are so much easier without a cam. Lol. Time to learn about Spain and one man'slove affair with developing a motorcycle brand...that turned into many motorcycles. :)

So we ran into our first problem with doing a restoration...read this..."

The first Montadero came and went quite quickly, as it was a bit too Bandido-like, too high-strung, to suit the cow-trailing American market. The Montadero Mark II followed; it was a genuine slogger, with a heavier flywheel and the engine timing making grunt rather than horsepower. Reviewers described the engine as having “four-stroke-like pulling ability”…no mean praise. It also had a bigger fuel tank, improved suspension, a slightly revised frame, and a sophisticated, waterproofed, electronic ignition."

The Montadero had a "larger" fuel tank. The ignition is correct, suspension, flywheel...different timing mark.

This tank is off a bandido. It was also the wrong color.

After a comment by Xb33bsa we decided to go back and get another Bultaco...this one had a bandido frame and a M51 engine. Zeke had the tank in the truck and said, "dad this tank was red it had been painted black so we get the bikes and the bandido had the Montadero tank on it.

Re: The Count Mount Zeke's El Montadero 360

The M51 has a points ignition. We remove the coil and sanded the frame and back of the coils for a good ground and reassembled. Checked the generator by hooking up a voltage ohm meter to the green wire and then grounded to the chassis. Kicked it over and the meter was hitting 6 volts. Then we checked the coil and is was 3100 ohms so it is bad. With an $18.00 coil from Matt at Speed and Sport we should have spark for the M51.

Now the bad news...The M70 generator/mag is good but the coil is bad. Since this is an electronic ignition only certain FEMSA coils work with our EI. Those coils are no longer made. Looks like Dynatek makes some 6 volt coils for an electronic ignition or we can convert this to a points system no problem. We could also try to locate a used FEMSA coil to match. We have repaired some Honda coils where the park plug wire is bad at the coil. Any other suggestions?

Re: The Count Mount Zeke's El Montadero 360

We removed both flywheels today. They both weigh over 8 lbs each! We made two different tools to hold the flywheel because they are slightly different. The M51 was 8.3 lbs and the M70 was 8.4 lbs. it will be interesting to see if they have the same timing marks.

Shout out to our friend Michael Moore http://www.eurospares.com/sherpat.htm

For directing us to Lynn Mobley

Also if you get a chance spend a few hours on Michael's site...fascinating. He also started one of the first vintage motorcycle, if not the first, forums on the Internet.

Re: The Count Mount Zeke's El Montadero 360

Lynn was kind enough to provide some background info on the Bultaco Bandido and the Montadero. He said that there were no mixing of Bandido frame numbers with Montadero engine numbers. Montadero cranks liked to fail because of the heavy flywheel if they were ridden incorrectly like on the highway for extended periods of time. Howeve, if it was ridden on the dirt it was not likely to faill if it is ridden like a dirt bike. What I didn't ask was whether or not this was a resonance issue. Any thoughts?

The Bandido does NOT like to cruise at 40mph and will try to jerk the chain off if it is not accelerating or decelerating (what do you expect from a bull?) hence the heavy flywheel was added to dampen the engine.

The Bandido and Montadero were shelved because of the lighter and more powerful Pursang 360 but it was the Pursang 400 that could have saved Bultaco.

Bultaco strings are few and far between on the web and this is one of the best I have found http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766444 on Building a Bultaco TSS from scratch. Some gold to be mined from this string on Two Stroke Tuning a Taco like....

Looks like there is a Nova 6 speed out there for the Bultaco. Interesting may need that info for my build.
