sr250 first build, I know nothing at all.

Hello, Got this SR250, with the engine out of the frame for $200.00. The guy told me he had redid the head, and rebuilt the carb. I figured, for $200.00 I'll take a chance and do my first build.

I'm all over the place on where I want to go with this build. My inspirations are

I really like Cosworth's project here, but won't be going anywhere near what he's done. My hat goes off to his skills.

And of course... Mexico

I like the seat on this one, but for some reason the rest doesn't do much for me.

I'm closely following this build as well.

One of the first things I did was rip off the buckhorn bars, and toss on a free set my buddy donated from his Dirt Bike. They're not a perfect fit so I'll be searching for more of a straight bar.

The Fenders are spotted with rust, so I was thinking of painting them. I used some tinfoil and polished them up but the rust is starting to return.

The original Blue tank was filled with sand and crud, from sitting outside and I think the guy tried to get rust out of the inside. It had seized the gas cap shut. I had tried for several hours to get it open, and finally managed to pop it, but bent the side of the tank in while doing it. Luckily, Cosworth lives fairly close and is an inspiration of mine. He had kept his stock tank, which a buddy picked up for me. Thanks. I owe you, Cosworth.

I've ordered some cheap signals and headlight from Amazon. I'm just seeking to get this thing roadworthy, so I can take it for a spin for a day or two, figure out if I need to do engine work, and then begin stripping it, to powdercoat the frame. I'd like to try to learn do as much as I can before having to resort to a shop. I'm not much of a fabricator, but then I've never had much need before. I do work in an engine room, and have access to a drill press, lathe, grinder, welder, and the usual assortment of hand tools. I can't however take my frame or engine in to work on it there, so all things will have to be test fitted, then machined, transported, etc. but that's easy enough.

I'm new to the motorcycle game, like I said, I know nothing. I was under the impression that the autofabrica builds were trackers, and cosworth's build is more along the lines of a cafe racer.

None of them are tracker bikes... some resemble a tracker.

Build what makes you grin till drool is drippin from yer chin mang! when your all done... you have to ride it.

That ^^^

Build it to be safe. Build it so it performs at least as well as stock (but hopefully better). Build it so that YOU think it's awesome.

Thanks for the link, Von.

Has anyone ever tried soaking their old chain in paraffin wax after cleaning it up? One of the older engineers I work with told me that they used to do that back in South Africa when he was younger.

You could do that, but honestly if I were you I'd replace the chain and sprockets. It's cheap insurance. No point in half as sing anything. Unless of course that stuff is new (ish) already.

It seems to be in decent shape. I'm going to buy new eventually, but just want to get the bike running and rolling and see what I'm dealing with first

So I changed the oil, charged up a spare car battery, ran some jumper cables, and the damn thing turned over, with the ignition off. Took me by surprise. Nice to know it turns over. Now to figure out how to get it so I can hook it up with the key off.

Contacted the paint shop. 550+ to powder coat the frame, that's if I've completely striped and taped everything off. Not sure that it's worth it for a 250 that only cost $200.00. That's a month's rent in my neck of the woods.
