watch project opinions please
« on: Jan 09, 2018, 09:32:55 »
thanks for taking a look this is a project im trying to get off the ground any input is appreciated.

i started out 8 years ago modifying cases and making parts for collectors who wanted a little something different, that led to working on my own watch. My goal is to have every part i can made in house, obviously its not cost effective to make crystals other than acrylic so those will be purchased from parts houses along with the movements for now. So far i am just working on one prototype, getting it perfected, and trying my luck with crowdfunding. I look at crowdfunding as a intro avenue to sell watches not so much to  raise capital though hopefully it does both.  While i am not ready to go to production more than a few individual watches i would like your opinions on this prototype.

Things i would like specific opinions on:

over all look of the watch
how important where its made is
how important how its made is
how important the movement is i.e. swiss, asian, hand made etc.
water resistance make or break a purchase
packaging, boxes, utility of box after purchase general packaging requirments
most importantly where how to promote such a thing as crowd funding need back support to be successful
though i have written up some promotional info and created a web site www.triestwatches.com i will spare you that here your more than welcome to check out the site, its just a place holder at the moment.

the first one that is mostly complete is the Avanti, being a gear head and loving the look of the 1960's European sports car and motorcycle  instruments, i took those as inspiration.

thanks again for taking a look, any thoughts, opinions, criticisms etc are welcomed.

That is a awesome looking watch! Love the detail on the face with the screw heads and the hands. Did you do all the machine work on the crown and the back of the watch? The 2 tone watch band looks fantastic as well. I'd be interested in one of those for sure.

If you want an automatic, ETA would be a good place to start as far as movements go. Though, one thing to keep in mind on an auto is availability to service it.

Box, really only comes in to play with resale, and only on mid-range, and up, Swiss watches. Breitling, Omega, Rolex, etc.

Waterproofing, or lack thereof, would be a deal breaker for me. I don't want to have to take a watch off to hop in the shower, or in the ocean, etc.

As far as look, that's fairly subjective. I have dive bands on all my Tissots, and my Chrono SuperOcean. Titanium on my Chrono Avenger, and stainless on the rest. I'm not a big fan of leather bands, as I am fairly active and they soak up sweat, but a lot of people are.

Sapphire crystal is a must, unless you're an office only kind of person.

As far as crowd funding, there always seems to be a ton of watches on the various sites. Some make money, most don't. The ones that do, it seems, put some serious coin behind advertising on social media to get it in front of the masses.
