1980 CB650 chop, hardtail with inverted front end!

Re: 1980 CB650 chop

Got a few things done today....

Made the spacer for the speedo side of the axle and that makes the front axle set complete

The pivot mount for the seat finally came in so we welded up that and the spring perches (springs not here yet)

We tried every which way to use the mini keg as is but no matter what it interferes with the chain, so we split it open to modify it

Pretty neat gadgets inside.

put some more time on the lathe last night whipping up the rotor adapter to bolt the VZ800 rotor on the CB650 wheel with the correct offset and such.

Just have to drill and tap the ten holes in it for all the bolts. Ordered countersink allen bolts for the adapter-wheel and ordered a matching 90* countersink bit so the face of the screws are flush with the mounting surface for the VZ800 rotor....that's all we're waiting on to finish the rotor adapter.

Beyond that, the plastic arm on the left bank choke mech was busted....so I did some research and I guess it's common and cb750 ones fit yet have a metal arm on them so we snagged one of those on ebay for $17 shipped. Once that's in we can finish rebuilding the carbs and run the harness and she's ready to run!

Maybe I'm seeing this wrong... How does this rotor adapter work?

From what I can see it's just a spacer, with the threads yet to be tapped. Countersunk bolts holding spacer to cb650 wheel, then other bolts holding rotor to spacer.

this is correct. I haven't drilled/tapped it yet for mounting. It is essentially a 12mm spacer that also converted the bolt pattern from the cb650 wheel to the VZ800 rotor.

I'll post a bunch of pics of assembling it once I get it drilled and tapped. Waiting for the 90* countersink bit to come in

Thanks trietz!

Nick finally had some time to come down and tinker again, he brought hardware and a 90• countersink bit so we finalized the rotor adapter

After countersinking:

Then laid the vz800 rotor over it and marked for the holes to drill and tap

Then mounted it to the wheel

Then rotor goes on

Then the wheel goes back on

Then we borrowed some clip ons from another shop bike for testing

Then borrowed an idea I saw someone else do here in DTT and whipped up some headlight mounts.

Just gotta mount the electronics can and finish the carbs now. Then paint

I take it you're planning on running a digital speedo? You know the cable drive will be going backwards with the wheel around the other way, right?

Nice build BTW - keep the pics coming ;)

Sorry for the lull in updates. We got into the carbs to discover the choke mechanism was damaged and tinkered with by a previous owner in an attempt to make it still work. It was beyond repair, and after buying a pair of choke rails on eBay that ended up being mis identified we ended up sourcing cb750 carbs to steal the choke parts from. We also has a month wait on backordered pilot jets and finally got the carbs done and on the bike this evening. Upon loosely running the harness, we started attempting to hear her run for the first time in our care....had spark, then didn't. Then battery died while trying to diagnose. Since it was 11pm we called it a night. We'll try again later this week with a new battery

well, we got he to fire up for the first time in three owners....the two owners before mahoney were mutual friends and neither ever got it running. After seeing how damaged the carbs were it's no wonder!

We also swapped the gold clip-ons for black ones, and got a nice new H4 headlight setup and mounted that up.

^ thats the video, I can't figure out how to embed from a FaceBook video.....mahoney's phone apparently filmed in in very low quality, so our apologies for that, but it sure sounds halfway decent! still need to sync carbs and tweak jet sizes.

So while a couple more jet sizes are on order (I didn't think we'd need to go from 95-120 just with pods, and 35-42 on pilots!)

we pushed to get the rest of the bike assembled because the goal was for nick to take it around the block before the weekend was over. spent a couple hours saturday and 8hrs yesterday putting on new chain and sprockets, wrapping the exhaust, mounting the mini-keg (with battery) and mounted up the harness/electronics for a shakedown ride. 6:30pm and he took a spin.....full choke, not fully charged brand new battery, and off he went.

only a few things left....going to do light body work and paint on the tank and give it to a local artist to play with some sharpies on it

need a shorter brake hose up front

need to wire up tail light

throttle housing is busted so need a new one of those

swap front tire for the new one nick bought

play with jet sizes once they come in, adjust valves, sync carbs.

jets came in, got the carbs back together last night with what we thing should be the trick we need, and we did a little wiring over the weekend while waiting for jets.

used the VZ800 gauge mounts to mount the choke pull and a new starter button, filled the vz800 handlebar mounts with some bullet casings for fun.

new throttle assembly is on order, tail light is wired up and functional now. should be a rider in the next couple of days.
