Woot! Went to see a guy about a kz400 but left with a 305 lol. Picked it up for a $160. No carbs, leaking oil, with a title on the way (I hope). I'll post more pics when I get home. Wanting a sweet bobber build, but we'll see.
OK so I guess what I need to do is read my manual and find out what I'm missing. .. order parts... in the mean time take off the wiring harness, lights, tach etc.
I would highly recommend getting it running before you tear t apart. No point in making something look all pretty if it doesn't move. If you're pulling the wiring harness, I'd leave the essentials (coils, ignition, kill switch etc) so you can get it running before you rip the whole harness out.
Bring tank to a radiator shop and have them give it an acid bath to clean out the rust, guys here have had good success with that method.
Thanks for the reply. I'll check out a radiator shop.
it's leaking from here. It began the moment I wrapped the shifter around the foot peg I've been searching for some keihin cv 32 but no love. Kind of thinking about doing a single carb setup. Found a great build on chop cult for a kz400 with a single carb. I'll post it later.
It was actually on the kzrider forum. Super sweet build. He makes that one carb setup look too easy... I think if I ordered the pipe, carb, and took the measurements I could get SOMEONE to fab it up.
Starting cleaning the inside of the tank today. Had a ton of slingshot ammo my faja gave me. 1/4 inch steel BBs. The plan was to do a dry run, vinegar run a few times, baking soda/water, then a splash of rubbing alcohol, and finally a coat of two-stroke oil! I was feeling ambitious.
Rusty ass petcock.
Finally.
Going in...
Shook for about 10 min. Then attempted to shake them out for another 20. Maybe a handful left in there. Might do something attached to a string next time.
Single
Also, another source of project income has fell in my lap. I was given a badass TV at work! "For your hard work" they said
Planning on selling this beast on cl soon, buying carbs, battery, and firing this thing up.
Like i mentioned in an earlier post, I'm having no luck with finding stock carbs for this thing. Anybody know of a good thread about bolting two carbs up with two throttle cables or any other option I'm overlooking? I just recently took the leap of ordering off aliexpress for cheap Chinese shit. Might snag two 32mm koso carbs for $45...
Straightened out the shifter. Put it in first, took out the plugs, turned the motor over and some air blew in my face. I'm assuming that's good
All vinegared up. Going to shake and soak for the next few days.
Since the points cover is missing I'm thinking they had trouble with this. Found some replacements on ebay.
Can't really get the impact driver AND hammer in there to get the carb boot bolts out. Been spraying penetrating oil every day so far but no luck. Maybe grab a disc for my dremel and cutting a slot in it.
I originally had planned for a bobber, but now I'm quickly realizing just how stoked I'll be if this thing starts If this ends up being a resto or cafe build thread, will a moderator move this?
Battery is coming in this afternoon. Looking forward to seeing what kind of shape the electrical bits are in. Also my carbs from China have shipped! Only two days of processing. $62.27. Hopefully they will be here in 2 weeks!
I've heard some pretty bad things about those Chinese Mikuni knockoffs. One guy even told a story of gas eating through the bottom of the bowl. However, even if they work well for you I think that 32mm will be way too big for your 305 - it will be tough to get it tuned. I'm running Mikuni VM30s on my KZ400 and they perform fine but I'm told that VM28s would be sized better for it. Hopefully they work out for you though.

Yeah I'm a little concerned. I just wanted the cheapest just to see if this thing runs. The stock on the 305 are 32 keihins, but I know that doesn't really equate since these are flat slides. Maybe if she starts up and it turns into a promising project I'll drop some $$$ on nice carbs. Is there a guide anywhere about selecting carb sizes based on displacement?
Alright so they arrived! Only came with one other set of "jets", they have no markings so I'm unsure of the sizes or where I could get more of them :/ in the meantime I'll be enjoying the fourth , researching these carbs, possibly getting my grandfather to help fab some sort of manifold, and ordering a 2-1 throttle cable!
I've done a 305 cafe build. Mine was running when I got it so I was already way down the track from where you are. Someone may correct me but I don't think you can do a 2 into 1 carb on a 305 because it has a 180 degree crank. The 400 has a 360 degree crank so the carb can feed one cylinder then the next. On the 305 the cycles overlap - if that makes sense. If not you'll need to look it up. I can tell you that generally parts are hard to find but at least you live on the right side of the Pacific. My bike is running pretty sweet now although still a little smokey. Heaps of fun to ride - I speed constantly, it's too hard not to! Good luck!

Thanks Hama. Yeah I ordered two carbs. I read that as well about the cycles overlapping. The main idea is that at the end of the intake of cylinder 1, cylinder 2's intake begins, right? So it happens equally to each cylinder? The more they overlap the more the carb size comes into play I would think. But what do I know
There aren't too many 305 builds and I've subscribed to yours! Thanks! I'll need the luck...
