Here is my current build. A 77' 550F. Typical non runner story. 8k on the bike.
Parts collected for the build.
06 GSXR front end complete
benelli mojave tank
rear hoop bent
waiting for the motogowerks 4-1 to be completed but I have ordered
tapered bearings for the conversion
650 cam for a little oomph
new wire harness
I am sure I'm missing something..... I started a thread on sohc as well.
I am still debating on doing a mono shock for the build..

I have a Honda front hub in a late 90's GSXR front end. A friend made me an axle to sort it all out. Bearing choices for the Honda hubs are sparse - biggest axle you can put in is 20mm I believe. So it takes some machine work to sort out the spacers etc. you need to mount up in the USD fork.
Direct swap as far as the stem goes. I ordered the proper bearings from All Balls. Had to remove the races. The lower race on the gsxr was a pain though. Only way yo remove was to dremel it off. Other then that it was super smooth. Now to get the front wheel mounted properly.
Re: 77' CB550F w/ 06' GSX'r front end/ benelli tank in 7/11
Did you try one of these bearing separators for the lower race on the stem? I still have to remove mine, and this tool is sitting waiting. I used one to remove the end bearing on an XS650 crank. Works like a charm on bearings, but not sure how well it is going to work on a race which might not have a lip to get started under.
I've dremelled off a few races from stems too, to that's plan B.

Thanks. The stem is what I was curious about. That's one more bit of info toward my own build, stalled but research is half the fun. I had to dremel off the lower race from my 550 last night. The tool Tim posted sure looks easier.

I am not sure if the tool tim has shown would work. Ive swapped out all balls tapered bearings in every 550 and 750.... I was always able to use a long punch to temove the lower race on the stem. The gsxr one had nothing to grab on to. The dremel took less then 5 minutes as I went slow.
Freeze the stem and heat the bearings in thw oven at 185 for 10 min. Helps with the install....
