Hello from Norway!

I bought this CB last year and I am in the process of transforming it into a Cafe Racer.
The frame and paint was i pretty good shape, but the rest was pretty tired!

Takker! DTT treff høres bra ut!

Thanks! I think the Yoshi replica is very nice for the price! It is lightweight and looks/sounds great! ;-)

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

While I am waiting for my rearset brackets I might as well make a shift rod! :)

Now I wait for better weather, so the testing can start!

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

Had a little ride today and the bike feels good on the road and corners really well. I have some carburetor work to do however.

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

So, I have noticed an increasing amount of blueish smoke coming out of the exhaust when warm and idling. Thats not good..... I was hoping to ride the bike this summer and overhaul the top end in the winter. I realize this has to be handeled ASAP! Probably valveseals and/or piston rings...?

So I bought a compressiontester and here is the results....

Procedure:
Bike warmed up, plug out, choke off, full throttle, push startbutton untill the needle stops moving.

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

hi,

how do you attached the number plate?
can you make a pic from under the seat?

thx.

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

It is a bracket that is bolted to the top of the rear hoop. its made of aluminium and bent into shape, also holds the rear lamp.

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

I took a little ride to get it varmed up.

Then i took a compressiontest

Here are the results. First line is the test I took the other day, warmed up by idling only. The rest is from today.

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

Anyway....

Today I took off the cylinders and took the head apart.

The pistonrings looked ok and were loose.

I used a little magnet to take of the valve retainers.

As you see the no. 1 ex valve is missing.... I cant get it out of the head, it is bent! The no.2 ex valve was bent slightly also, but I managed to get it out.

To sum this up :
I have got two bent valves, 1 and 2 exhaustvalves. My guess is that the stiff valveseals became oval shaped, hence the blue smoke?
Cylinders are not looking good?... How do I know when to hone and when to bore?
The valves had a minimal play from side to side, is this normal or do I need new guides?.
Strange that it was not the tappets on the bent valves that got destroyed...?

Re: 77 Honda CB550SS

I am looking into buying a big bore kit, 592 or 605. Right now I an enquiering about a 605 kit, waiting for an update from the seller...

While I am waiting I am trying some porting!
