Handlebar recommendations

Ribo

Twist the "go-go" side and hold on!
Hey guys,

I'm a noob here but I'm looking for some advice on what handlebars to pick. I'm working on an '81 XJ650 that was just given to me and I've got it in a working running, inspection ready condition so I can ride it for the summer, after which starts the rebuild but I just can't stand riding it with the stock bars. I want something lower that straight but looking at clubmans or clip-ons they seem too aggressive.

Can anyone recommend a bar that would give just a slight downward angle from straight but not be as aggressive as the clubmans?

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.

Ribo./

i am not sure what you mean by downward but...

superbike style bars they are pretty much a very low almost mx type bend
you would love them
i have 2 styles in chrome for sale both used both in good shape
one is listed here on dotheton

I have superbike bars on my Suzuki and really like the height. They are a nice compromise, height-wise, between most stock bars and clip-ons. If you'd like to go a bit lower than these, drag bars are decent. I have a set on my MB5 and like them.

Thanks guys,

I'll check out what the superbike and drag bars look like when installed. I think the superbike ones maybe a little too straight. If the drag ones are somewhere between them and the clubmans that sounds about right for me.

Also I want them in black so there ;)

Appreciate the fast replies!

I use Superbike bars on my GL, lower then stock for better handling and feel but not so low that I can't also do 5-600 mile days. I got them from the local shop from their catalog for 25 bucks.

Forgive my terminology, when I say downward I meant the angle of the bars from the tree or top of fork in relation to the tree.

I think I've decided on the drag bars but I'm going to see if i can install them a little low... anyone got any recommendations for a decent make that comes in matte black. Budget upto $50 for the right ones.

Thanks,

I ended up ordering the drag bars...

I'm still not 100% sure but we'll see how they sit.... If I don't like em for this bike I'll just keep them on the shelf of the next one and get those superbike bars...

Yes, tomaselli clipons (condor I believe) would give the setup. You could look into some Norman Hyde style m bars too in the future if the drag bars dont work out.

Thanks,

Yeah - I looked at these http://guzzino.com/toadcl.html for a bit too.

Dragbars should be waiting for me at home so i'll be trying them out tonight hopefully...

I have drag bars on my KZ. They were 28" wide which on my bike puts the master directly above the right fork tube. Made it somewhat difficult for hose routing. A superbike bar with that little bit of rise would have made a big difference.

I've been thinking of changing out my clubmans for something like these Norman Hyde "M" bars, which are flat like drag bars but shaped like an "M" so they have a little angle to them.

yeah I like them but the drag bars fit my aesthetics better right now which is minimalist - just not sure my back is going to agree with me :) hopefully I'll get them on tonight

See my update in my project thread...http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=59540.msg674037#msg674037

fury413rb -- You were right about the master cylinder but it also became clear very quickly that both stock controls are too big... new ones ordered and it looks like the master hose connection will be an inch or so further out on the more compact new one... we shall see....
