Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO!

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

That is a cool design in the picture. Something like that would work. I really did want to mount the cans inside the frame but the tire would hit when the suspension is compressed. That design really does give me something to consider. Thanks.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks! I spent a lot of time working on the bike today, but it doesn't show. It took me about 5 hours to get the stinking 1 into 2 throttle cable cut/soldered and adjusted. I guess it had to be done. I will start working on the rear disk brake/wheel conversion in the next few days. I also need to finish the exhaust. it is about ready to fire up. I have spark! I would add pictures but there's not much to see today.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I haven't decided yet but I am considering the old red & white Yamaha color scheme. What do you ya think?

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

In the previous pictures I was using the old axle that was too small. After a few minutes in the magic laboratory and POW the swing arm and chain adjusters accept the bigger YZ axle. Looks like the caliper will slip into place just fine. Next I will be working on the chain alignment then I can turn the spacers on the lathe. Another plus is the fact that the yz wheel feels like it must weigh 5 pounds less than the xt wheel. A lot of that could be the big ol' DOT tire too.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

SHe's gotten her blood sacrifice! The project should go smoother from now on. :D

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Justin, I'm glad you approve. :) I whipped up some wheel spacers and washers for the axle. Took care of the sprocket and rotor line-up. If anyone wants to do a rear disc swap on their XT350, this is the way to go. It seems almost to easy. Tomorrow I will start working on the master cylinder and foot lever. I am procrastinating on doing the exhaust. I just don't know where or how to get the bends i need to clear the front tire and frame. I am trying not to spend much more on the bike, so I need to get clever now.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I started machining some bits to mount the rear brake lever. The shaft will get cut to the correct length then welded from the back side. Next I will be making the master cylinder mount. So far so good :)

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I need some ideas for a seat mount. I want to be able to take it off to get to the battery if need be. there will be an inner fender in the way so I cant just bolt it on from underneath. Any thoughts?

Some guys have used industrial strength velcro for that, but I'm still not 100% sure on trusting that...

Alternatively you could scour a wrecker and find a seat locking mechanism from some other bike to butcher and make fit, and that way you possibly have a remote release or keyed lock setup.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

If all else fails, I'd try to find an old suitcase with locking latches, and try to get that to work. Butchery at its best, but it might well do.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO UPDATE

So...I finished my rear brakes. They are functional but I need to get a shorter brake line, and mount the reservoir. I also came up with a method for mounting my seat. I know its different but it is effective and I know its one of a kind, haha. (video below) Sorry its shaky...I there are some things in life that work better with two hands

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO UPDATE

Mate, big thumbs up! I like it... the seat latch, the inner guard... all excellent stuff :D

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO UPDATE

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm starting to get excited, as soon I as I finish the exhaust I'm going to fire her up and do a little test drive.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO UPDATE

Got these little babies today, I found it slightly odd that there was a bottle of 5 hour energy shipped in the box with my pipe. I bet they are telling me to chug it and pull an all nighter in the garage. haha hopefully I will get some time to work on the exhaust this weekend.
