1979 Kawasaki KZ650 - Ultrasonic Cleaning Carbs

I invested in an Ultrasonic Cleaner. It certainly does make things convenient.

To clean the carbs I took them fully apart, filled the ultrasonic bath with 3/4 warm water and 1/4 simple green concentrate.

The results were pretty good. It cleaned out all of the inside and hard to reach areas.

Ran two 480 sec cycles with heat. Plastic and rubber safe.

Thanks PJ. It's been taken some time. Just dropped of the cylinder to get bored. The place, Powerseal USA was swamped. They said 3-4 weeks :(

That's okay though because i got plenty of other things to work on.

Re: 1979 Kawasaki KZ650 - Head Rebuilt

Wheel looks amazing. I dig the way you chose the polish on black.

Progress is slow but moving forward. Rebuilt the front forks and assembled the steering stem. All torqued up to spec.

Black tubes and ears look bitchin.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Fuse Box Kit & LED Flasher Relay

Pretty psyched about these pieces. A user on a KZ facebook forum told me about these. A modern fuse box replacement and a Flasher Relay for LEDs that doesn't need resistors! It's music to my ears.

Dan from Creative Wiring Solutions, LLC personal replied to my email to fulfill my request on a back ordered item.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Fuse Box Kit & LED Flasher Relay

Nice! I bought one enclosed one off amazon for $7 and a Led relay for $6 and they work great so far!

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Fuse Box Kit & LED Flasher Relay

I used both of those on my build, really good quality stuff and plugged right in to the existing system

Hey, I like your cafe. Is that throttle assembly the MotionPro Push/Pull? Also did you have to buy throttle cables off their site too? What are you using for your master cylinder?

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Fuse Box Kit & LED Flasher Relay

Master cylinder is off eBay one of the Chinese ones. Throttle assembly is a motionpro one I found on ebay and then I found the throttle cables through z1enterprises as they have shorter assemblies depending on how short you need them. Motion pro has custom length ones also but they are a little more spendy.

I got a front tire now. Back tire is done too but I want to do some more polishing on the hubs first before I mount it.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Starting to take shape!

I'm proud to say I'm happy this thing is finally standing on its own. I'm think this will be more of a resto-mod instead of a full blown cafe this time around.

The sticker decals and paint I hate. Can't wait to get rid of them. Things you'll notice in these pics that are not stock is...

Painted fork tubes & wheel spokes
Powdered fork ears.
Polished Wheel hubs
Progressive Rear Shocks
Tarozzi Fork Brace.

Front Fender - from an KZ650SR or KZ900, not sure. (eBay special)

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Starting to take shape!

So cool but I agree the decals are hideous.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Starting to take shape!

Still chipping away at it. Can't decide if I should keep the rear fender or ditch it and make a fender eliminator.

I also got these signals to fit despite how sort the mounting bolt was. I experimented making threaded spacers. Took me a couple tries to master it. I got (2) plastic spacers from Home Depot - 1 inch length, 1/2 inch outer diameter, 1/4 inner diameter. I tapped the outside with a M14-2.00. Then drilled out the inside enough to match the threads on my blinkers - M8-1.25. Then I replaced the OEM grommets on the headlight bucket with leas bulky ones. I started with a large flat washer on the outside of the fork ears, then I used the diamond shaped bushing off the original OEM signals for the grommet in the fork ears, then screwed on spacer then secured with nut.

Oh, and I also wired up a new run/kill switch. Hooks up through the 4 pin connector. It just took some time to figure out the wiring and to make it look neat.
