To minimize on wasted wood. I cut dado's for the tongue and groove.

Then cut the "tongues" from small scraps of walnut that would've went on Tims burn pile.

Also, as per IRK Millers awesome suggestion...Large, vintage, cast iron Drafting table pivot hinges.

Re: Walnut service bench

Just messing around w checkering files.

About 20 minutes spent learning this skill is gonna suck to teach myself.

About half the size of a stamp.

Re: Walnut service bench

Are you using a checkering tool, or a carving tool? A key when checkering is to make multiple passes, and don't try to do your run all at once. It's almost like sketching with a pencil pushing the tool back and forth as you run your line. But it has to be a saw type checkering tool. File type only work by pushing. Until you train your hand, you can use a good straight edge and an exacto blade make your initial line, then run your checkering tool in the groove.

Re: Walnut service bench

at least the checkering went better than the router-ing. LOL OMG I dont Like wood.

Here is my practice run on a piece of scrap oak.

Re: Walnut service bench

Tim told me switch from working right to left, go left to right. Boomshakalaka.

Re: Walnut service bench

Lucky for me, Tim is an expert at ripping long pieces to width on his table saw.

Didnt take much belt sanding to make the sides exactly the same and straight. 8)

Re: Walnut service bench

UPS dropped off the first wave of "incentive" to get this bench done.

"I Wanna Take You Higher" Sly and the Family Stone. I hate woodwork, too. Love the results when done right, though!

Re: Walnut service bench

Im beginning to think this bench w never get done...

Rach made me install a whole house filter system, which entailed re-plumbing half the basement.

As, its on the opposite end of the basement the softener was. And now that the softener is gone. Had to patch up all that stuff. :p

Than advCo "CONNED" me into making a custom seat cover for him. ;) ( my 3rd time ever in front of a sewing machine )

But you just cant say no to the dude, he's just too dang good lookin'. ;D

BTW, this cover burnt me on sewing custom seats....WHAT A FRUSTRATING BITCH and NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!

I just loosely half assed the fit w tape. Leaving the stretching and CREATIVE STAPLING for Nick.

Finally, got up early and set up router for mortices...

The first 9 footer went pretty damned great. The second one started out shaky and only got worse.

The blade had slipped in the chuck. So I tried to tighten...wouldnt budge...loosen...still wont budge....EXPLODED THE FUCKIN MOTOR LOCK!!!

Tore it apart. Removed chunks of plastic and steel bits. Cut the locks safe switch out and re-wired. Got the bit out.

Re-installed and cutting went well after that. But now its too hot to work. So hope to finish ALL mortices this evening.

You can see the shaky spots in second board but w some work it will be OK.

May cut mortice a bit over size and glue a shim in then re-cut mortice nice.

Re: Walnut service bench

You could always dado, like you did the other bits. Or multiple passes moving the fence in increments. Just have to go beyond your endpoint to account for the curve of the blade. (If you're worried about it)

I'm procrastinating on doing the chopper seat. But, no intentions to machine sew it. I want to do hand leather work, instead.

Luckly the wiggly parts went below my line. So I reset my guide board and c-clamps. The "top" cut is pretty straight and on my line.

So few if any of those wiggles will show. They are on the underneath of work deck. Ill just make a second pass to clean that up smooth.

Then cut a 3/8x1/2" strip to glue in. And I will be back on track.

Excited to see your leather work. 8)

Re: Walnut service bench

Seat came out great my man, much appreciated. You're a lifesaver. I started removing the POR-15 from the 360 tank last night only a couple more loose ends to tie up now.

Bench is looking great. The hand router can have a bit of a learning curve but its one of my favorite woodworking tools..just make sure that the collet is TIGHT! I hate those motor lock routers, even though using wrenches a pain you know you can get them tight (my old craftsman router mounted to a table would never get tight enough to stop the blade from slipping with motor lock, i think there was some 'give' in the plastic).

HF fixed base router is around $50 and its been a workhorse for me.

Thanks bud, I’m glad the seat will work out for you. Post a pic once it’s stretched and installed.

I can not imagine failed tank sealer is any fun at all.

Thanks for the router input. I will stop in HF as I can sort of make it on my trip home without much trouble.

Re: Walnut service bench

Well I didn't stop and get a new router. But this pos is working better now.

Also, Out of frustration the other day, completely brain farted I had to make a second pass on the mortice as my bit is 3/4 and boards are 15/16.

So that in itself took care of most of the wiggle spots.

Anyways I made a short 1/4 run and will add shim and finish it flush and that takes care of the bad routing.

now all boards fit together nicely w just a touch of wiggle room for glue.

Re: Walnut service bench

Things are starting to go my way now.

Got a handful of short mortices and supports to cut in the morning.

And I may be ready for some glue, clamps and dowels.
