Hammered cl360

Rydog400f

Been Around the Block
Picked up a new project. A 1974 cl360 that I thought was going to be a quick project until I noticed some metal shavings from the intake. Looks like someone had a bad day! A dropped valve cratered the piston. Luckily I have an almost complete parts bike to pick from. Gonna do a resto-mod type of build. Luckily all the wiring and electrical works. I'm not sure if the rear wheel is to the bike though. Might be a cb450 rear wheel? I'll keep you posted!

Pretty amazing, someone kept riding it on one cylinder to cause that much damage. Probably kept riding until it couldn't keep going
Rear wheel may be stock? (CB72/77?)
Rare to see cable operated brake.
Does the front brake have the cast or pressed operating lever?

Damn. Hammered hardly covers it.

Haha I know but I love taking these beat up Hondas and bringing them back to life. This one is actually in better shape then my last one believe it or not! Plus these cl/cl360's are so cheap I could buy a new engine on ebay for about $100.

Now that I've looked at a few I think it is stock. Yeah maybe they were in a hurry or running from the police haha. I believe the brake lever is cast.

did you do a compression check? looks like the rings have a bit of wear =)

I've seen a lot worse, at least the rod looks OK so you won't need to change crank 8)

Yep, seen a few sleds (snowmobiles) that had a big piece of the skirt give out. One in particular had a quick two into one "header". Trashed the original failed piston and head, chucked the piece into the exhaust and sucked a chunk into the second hole, thoroughly destroying it as well.

Nothing like making fun of someone who's motor blew up big time in a race ;D (I've had that happen as well ;) )

Oooh glitter! Split the cases today. All the gears and everything looks fine. I'll just need to clean all the gunk out. The oil filter screen is trashed and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement. I've got a couple of questions if anyone cares to chime in. The left piston rings look fine but should I replace them? Also the new jug I got was off a running bike so should I hone it or will it be ok? Anything else I should do while I have the cases split other then change the oil seals? Thanks!

I would use some 320 grit 'Wetordry' with some kerosene or similar just to break the glaze on cylinders
You can do it by hand rather than get a ball hone (Flex -Hone)
If 'new' cylinders have any rust or damage it would be a good idea to get everything properly measured up though

Picking up where I left off. The rebuild has been going nicely so far. Picked up some MikeXs flanged rims and rebuilt the motor. So as of right now im rebuilding the carbs, finishing the wiring, and waiting on some parts to come in. I picked up a cb350 front fender and got a beat up seat off ebay which I'll be shipping off to Vinyl-Lux for re-upholstering. I'm also rebuilding the controls and the gauges. Compared to my 400f rebuild these 360's are pretty fun to rebuild! I'm thinking about putting a mid '70s xs650 tail light on and maybe picking up the common- motor collective h4 35w headlight.

What happened to the cable operated rear brake?
Do you know what thew wheel was out of? (wasn't any 360 I've ever seen ;) )

I'm not really sure. I bought this bike along with 4 others (3 cl360's, a cb450, and an xs650) so I'm not sure if it came off one of those or was just off another random parts bike.

Got a lot done on the bike over the past few weeks. Sorted out all the wiring and got the motor started. The RPM's shot up even with the idle adjuster back off all the way so I have some tuning to do. I noticed some oil from the headers and found that only one copper gasket isn't enough to seat the pipes so I had to put 2 in each to tighten them up. I love how interchangeable the parts are. The cb350 front fender fit great and I'm using the rear tail light off a cb400f. I bought a 7" headligth from DCC and put it on some emgo headlight brackets and everything fit great. Now all I have to do is touch up the paint on the gauges, find a new right muffler as the one I have has holes, add uni foam to the stock air filters, figure out why the horn isn't working, put a new seat cover on, and change out all the bulbs for led from superbrightleds. Almost done!
