Can anyone recommend a vertical-band-saw?

Twist the "go-go" side and hold on!
I moved to the USA from UK about 7/8 years ago and at the time it just wasn't cost effective to ship all my tools so I had to sell most of them. I did inherit a lot of tools from my late Father in-law but he was mainly interested in wood-working. I've managed to purchase a decent number of things over the years here but I find myself in need of a vertical-band-saw now for fabrication of small metal jobs.

Can anyone recommend a basic one?

To me, it's the best one you can find on Craigslist. I have an older Delta/Rockwell vertical bandsaw that has been very good. I have a Sunex horizontal bandsaw that works fine but it was basically given to me. I wouldn't have payed much, if anything for it. JET has seemed to go down a bit in my experience, but Powermatic still seems to hold their own. I see Powermatic stuff on Craigslist a fair amount.

Thanks - what do you think to this:

My budget is pretty low - say upto $150 - but i want something that works - I don't need anything fancy but it needs to cut metal sheets for things like license plate mounts etc.

I'd try to get it a little cheaper, but it will do you fine for a while. The new ones at that size are $170. I'd get a 14", but they may be hard to find in your budget.

the problem with most all vertical band saws is they are geared to tall, too much blade speed will not work for steel and not all that suited for alloy neither :-X :-\
that said i have geared one down the last one i used a honda scooter rear gear reduction case adapted to the saw drive
this is the same unit 2 speeds but they are both too fast for metal way too fast for steel
it is a good saw though
also a porta band is real handy and can be used clamped upright in a vise

So what do you recommend for cutting such shapes out of sheet metal? I have a decent jigsaw but not sure about using that for metal?

a bandsaw, with proper blade speed ;)
if you get a fast one just gear it down or ad a jackshaft and belt reduction it
or a beverly shear is a wonderful tool as well

What metal? I cut aluminum in my garage using a jigsaw without problem. For steel I used the bandsaw at work.

I'm not sure you'll be able to get a good metal cutting bandsaw for $150. I don't want to say it can't be done, but where I'm at they go for at least $500, used.

I know this is an older thread, but I've seen people have success with the 4x6 horizontal saws mounted vertically with a table set up for the parts. As long as the pieces are small, and you only need a 4" throat, they work quite well. Blade speed is meant for metal, too.

A link that goes over some of it : http://www.mini-lathe.com/Bandsaw/Bandsaw.htm

Thanks man.... interesting read. I'm considering this - but really I just need a functional decent band-saw for a lot less than it's worth :).. just can't justify the money right now as it's going on other things so I'm on ebay/craigslist alert for a deal..

what do you cats think to this:

that's not a metal saw.
It will work for thin aluminum but your blades wont last long.

A metal saw is around 50-500 fpm where a wood saw is generally 2000-3000 fpm. Cutting steel your blade will be done in about 10 seconds flat and it will make a hell of a mess.
