1981 XS650 Project Something or other (going cafe-ish)

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

yep gonna have to see it but my point is the link location on the triangle swinger does most of its movement in a mostly horizontal plane compared to vertical movement as the wheel travels hence a link running up will not work it is outside its mechanical advantage sweet spot way out
multiplying things in the rocker wont fix that issue
it may work on paper but not in practice

I guess a classic example of how things are strong one way and not another is an egg. Crush it sideways it's easy, crush it lengthwise it's hard.

It's also easy to snap a pencil sideways, but breaking it by pushing down on the end is almost impossible.

I will for sure replace the front brace but I don't want to angle it all the way forward to the swingarm pivot, that seems weak to me too. What about running 2 braces on each side from the front corners of the upper brace down to the legs of the swingarm? Does that make sense? They would be more vertical that way as opposed to running the front 1x2 at a severe forward angle, or would the forward angle be ok?

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

Forward to the front tube is ok, because the forces on the brace are then put in tension and compression. Basically it will create a triangle, and you'll be pushing on the point of the triangle. The points of triangles are strong, that's why there's the term "triangulation".

Okay Maybe it's just me, but shouldn't the shock connect to the swingarm at some point? ???

Swingarm brace and pushrod attachment are going to be re done

Cut them to length and tacked them in place. Gussets and bracing will be added

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

You could save some time by having a new rocker designed and cutting aluminum in stead of redoing that amount of welding and grinding

You will need to make the hole that connects to the rod on the rocker, way lower, and maybe a tad front so you use the most of the upward movement of the rod to push the rocker and thus compress the shock what's needed

Hope I explained myself correctly, if not, I'll find a way

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

I do understand what you're saying. It actually functions surprisingly well as is, I just want a more direct angle so the movement is more direct and efficient. I'm not happy with the brace looks wise and it's only tacked in place. I think I was going to have chain clearance problems anyway so it was more than likely going to have to be replaced. Also have plans to redesign the bellcrank pretty much how you describe. The one I have on there now was for mock up and working out some theories and ideas that didn't end up working in the end. That's why we mock things up though right? And where would we be if we didn't push the envelope a little bit?

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

your link is connected already past center it may function on paper but it wont work for several reasons the way it is
i thought you said you were reading books ? on this stuff
not trying to be overly harsh but you really have it way wrong there

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

Changes will be made. Please continue to offer your words of kindness and encouragement xb, means a lot

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

I saw it was off but couldn't put my finger on it so I ran a quick simulation:

Pretty obvious now, but I can't figure out how to fix it without redoing a huge part of the work.

Re: 1981 XS650 Project Something or other

Now that is awesome!! Thank you Tijmen, I did realize it would pull down once past a certain point. Originally I was just going to change the brace but I also need a diffierent bellcrank too. A redesigned bellcrank and brace will take care of it. Not really very much work at all in the grand scheme of things. Thanks again!
