1981 Yamaha XS 400 Special II Cafe Racer build

Man, you should have hella torque with the length of those intake runners, plus the extra velocity of having just one carb....

Its alive ! Ended up swapping the coil connectors around and it fired up instantly what a simple fix. It does run lean on left cylinder and rich on the right but hey its running with the single carb. Its almost finishied ! need to figure out my license plate mounting and tie up a few loose ends but she is almost ready for the street. Here are two videos and some more pics:

How's the heat around the legs from the pipes?

Actually not bad at all, Still probably going to header wrap them. The powder coat on the pipes wasnt heat rated and the left pipe is bubbling by the head. It is running lean on left cylinder and rich on the right because of the single carb and 180 degree crankshaft. Not much else I can do other than going back to two carbs. Might end up going with a different exhaust that has mufflers. I went into the open header idea saying that if the Harley guys all over town can do it I can do it but I think it is just too obnoxious. It is way louder in person / riding it ;)

Video please! ;D As far as the lean condition.......there are several guys on xs400.com that are running single carb setups with good results I would check that out before you switch back to 2. I looked into to it for my xs400 because my mono-shock made fitting two carbs a challenge. The bike looks great by the way.

Installed some "lollipops" in the headers and it took the bite off the sound and started the wrapping the pipes. After they dry I will be doing the high temp silicone spray on them that should blackin them up a bit more.

hey i might have missed this in a earlier post, but #1 how much was it to have the 2 into 1 carb boot? (if you don't mind me asking) Also what did you have to do the the carb to run a single. That looks a lot like my BS34's that came on my 77 xs400. Im having trouble with my carbs one is bad so running just one may work out for me.

And Grate Build!!

You are correct that is a single stock BS34 carb running a 45 pilot jet and a 145 main jet. $90 for the intake manifold, $40 for the Velocity stack (polished filter replacement), and $10 on fuel rated hose to connect the carb to the intake. Warning: the left cylinder will run lean compared to the right cylinder if you run this setup, the XS400 uses a 180 degree crank which causes one cylinder to run lean.

Sweet! well now i know that i have a back up plan if i can get the one carb back up and running. I have also thought about running the XS Performance Carburetor Kit from mikes XS its $300 but they would be brand new carbs and i think you get a little power boost with the flat side carbs. Well im really just waiting to get back to my bike so i can work on it. Thanks Again!

Took some of the last pics of this bike :( Guy from Hawaii saw it on ebay and after his check clears next week it will be on a long journey to Honolulu. Sad to see it go but I need to fund the next project / toy.

Hows the CL build going?

Sold the CL, it was too far gone for my liking. Thinking about going to pickup a 74 CB200t next week though. Its starting to get cold out and I need a winter project :) Stay tuned...

Do you remember the size of the front tire? wondering what the max width I can run. Guessing its a 3.50 /18 or a 4.00 /18.

thanks in advance!
