1997 BMW F650ST to F650R: Enduro Hellride Conversion

Because of the routing of the exhaust, running a full fender down to the swing arm is pretty much impossible. The stock air box pretty much served this purpose, but it's gone. I riveted a rubber flap in place, which is a pretty common thing with dirt bikes:

Forgot to post a pic of the skid plate. I took one from an R1200gs, altered a couple of bends and drilled two new holes for a perfect size and fit:

Dude! You're gettin good at this shit. She's awesome. 8)
With the situations you're gonna get yourself into. The case savers and skid plate will be the golden ticket.

Dayyyyyyum Eric...................good job.

Did you ride that thing around Augusta?

Wished I could have joined ya........but I don't have anything to ride off road.

That said, sh1t I don't have anything to ride ON the road...!!!!!!

A little update on tune for this bike. I bought the TM34 carbs with a 200 main jet and 40 idle jet. I fouled the hell out of the plugs with the air mix screw at 3 turns out, running a P4 needle jet with the clip in the middle slot on the needle. You could give it gas from maybe 1/4 throttle up and it would bog like hell and eventually get some steam above 4 or 5k. So, I swapped all the way to the other end with a 130 main jet, moved the clip to the #2 slot on the needle, and went down to 2 turns on the air mix. So far, so good. It made quite a difference and seems to do what it's supposed to. This is all without a dyno, of course. I order jets from 145 - 175, and O4 needle jets. We'll play with the tune and see if I can find the sweet spot. All goes to show I need to find a Dyno to buy some time on tune.

I got to do a day of riding today, with a bunch of it on Sumter National Forest service roads just across the Savannah river from me. Although you wouldn't think of this area having major elevation changes, it actually has some interesting terrain. We're on what used to be ancient coastline, so Sumter is mostly sandy pine barrens with red clays at the upper most elevations. I love to take the dual sports up to the peak of the forest where there's a great vista overlooking what in ancient times would have been ocean. The ridge I have the bike on drops several hundred feet at nearly a 45° grade.

I think this is one of my favorite builds you've done so far. really making me want a dual sport even more dammit. Nice job ;D

Oh yeah, got me rethinking the SL350 now.

Great job Eric, looks really good.
