the Black Knight, a 400four tale.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

I'm no expert but I've been told the intake needs to be rough and the exhaust can be smooth almost to the point of polished. Also been told if you remove anything on the exhaust side to take it off the roof of the port. You can also remove material from the short side radius of the port. But without having a flow bench it's probably not worth the effort.

I would match the port to the intake boot while you are that far Ino it. I would do valve seals too.

The intake ports and insulators are a perfect match from factory.

Im cleaning - lapping - new seals on valves as soon as my NEW spring compressor arrives.

A "buddy" borrowed my old NEW spring compressor and thats the end of that!!!

Not messing w exhaust ports.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

A slightly rough surface will flow better than a perfectly smooth surface. (Think golf ball)
A polished surface will prevent carbon deposits.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

Yep. No need to mess with the ports. Just cleaning up the casting flaws and making the ports a uniform texture will help.

There is a whole world of port tuning if you want to go that way.
My suggestion was more of a "while you're there" improvement over stock. Like the grease nipples before.

Keep up the great work mate.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

I would love to be rich enough to buy a flow bench and just start trying stuff on old "junk" heads to see what works and what doesn't.

I had never heard one was in the plans.
Yeah, basically the failure by Star Wars standards of Solo has Disney rethinking all the Star Wars universe films. They will stick to running the Episodes and roll out the side films now and then, if ever at all.

Shame, I thought Rogue One was one of the better recent Star Wars films.

But then, too much of a good thing is...well not a good thing.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

Rogue one is certainly one of my faves.

And Solo is fun to watch too. I really enjoy Ron Howard’s other films. I think he’s great.

But, IMO he’s just not meant to direct a Star Wars film.

I am super delighted JJ Abrams will now be directing 9.

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

New lapping tool didn't work worth crap. It would just slide on the valve.

Knocked off the shiny w 400 grit and then it went much better, though still not great, just usable.

Started w #4 valves as they both leaked a little after sitting overnight.

11494-011118174021-46132126.jpeg

Just cleaned them up minimally, After Irk strongly warned against the ease of cupping.

Then I learned this is doing it wrong.

This is proper...

No leaks and so I continue w the rest.

Also, all the O-rings are on site. :)

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

Looks great. Love you. ;)

I've spent hours f-ing with lapping valves only to watch them worse. I learned once the color is consistent, and they look good and polished, they are usually good to go. If it took too much effort, they ended up cupped and sat in the hole too much, and didn't seal (or got worse). I've also bought in cheap for a bunch of thumper dirt bikes with scorched heads and burnt valves, so my perspective is probably skewed

Re: Black Knight, Race Bike!

Thanks for everything my brother.

Even though sometimes your a pain in my butt and cause me extra work.

I really do learn a lot and you understand how important - to me - it is to do the best job I can do, w what I have.

You push my limits ( ;) and sometimes my buttons ;)).

To be the best possible version of me.

I truly do appreciate your help, efforts and your time.
