1967 250 Harley/Aermacchi Sprint SS

Yesterday we sprayed the cylinder with Castle Thrust. With a little coaxing from the dead blow the piston came out quite easily.

Pulled the piston and here is a quirk with the Aermacchis the manual says you have to heat the piston up to 250 degrees...and you do :)

Why ?

Found these modifications to take care of oil leaks for the Aermacchi on Tony Foale's site http://www.tonyfoale.com/AermacchiEngine/pushRodTunnel.pdf

Was the reason for heating the piston related to removal of the piston pin?

Interesting piston valve recessed area... are the valves domed also? Reminds me of tulip sodium filled valves on big arse airplane round motors. If they are domed; pics please :)

If you decide the horribly damaged badging on the tank is just too much and you find a better example... I got DIBS on this one ::) ::) ;D!!!

I was not expecting the dished valve. There are several examples of dished vs flat valve explanations on the web. Here are a couple samples; reasons include lowering compression to improved intake performance.
