1963 BSA DBD34 Gold star

Been Around the Block
Hello ,
And I think I know what your going to say? Not another goldie to compete with Swannie.
Well I thought i'd put it out there. Someone may interested. Heck sometimes there's just nothing better to do than read.
With a little back ground first.
Firstly , Thanks for letting me join the DO THE TON forum,
Secondly a mate of mine has several old bike's and I have worked with him since 1977. I've never been interested in old bikes. Pre 70's that is. I've owned 111 bikes and have 8 at the moment. I've pestered him to restore a bike for at least the last 20 years. Well finally about 2 years ago he decided to give into my requests. What I didn't realize is what he had.
Obviously a 1963 Gold star. But I'm doing 4 bikes at once. I know I have a problem. The other 3 being Vincent 1000's.
I've decided to finish one bike at a time. The BSA firstly. Reading about Swannies bike has helped a lot, especially with assembly( as this bike was completely dismantled).
I have just about completed the engine and gearbox. The frame is almost done and the wheels too.
Well please let me know if you would like more information or if your sick of BSA rebuilds?
Thank you for your time.
Cheers

Thank you Tim,
The bike was involved in a bike v's truck collision in 1964.He hit the tyre and the bike went under the trailer wheels. Original owner has had it all these years and he pulled it apart in 1964. I mean pulled it apart. I have been getting pieces from him gradually.
I decided to restore the engine first. I had to get new rockers first as my friend had ground them down to make them lighter. Quite a quality job considering the time he done it and his age. But he wanted new ones fitted.
I purchased new rockers from John Cronshaw along with a gasket set. I hope I can name people?
I then purchased a Phil Pearson crank with the Carillo rod and 1'' timing side shaft. vernier cams, crank bearings, valves, valve springs, collets. wiseco 8.5 to 1 piston std size piston.
I have also ordered an oil pump from ABSAF and it should be here soon. The engine has been beed blasted and is mostly assembled.
I purchased a Phil Pearson clutch assembly too.
I stripped the gearbox and replaced mainshaft bearings and seals. Also he had removed all of the kick starter gears and mechanism. I have purchased all of the gearbox parts from Draganfly in the UK. This sounds like a large advert doesn't it?
The main frame was damaged and was poorly straightened at that time by a repair shop. My friend had managed to get another frame ,only it was a 1957 Gold star model and had been used in speedway and they had removed most of the brackets. Like mudguard and seat and tank. I don't know why.
I have had this frame repaired and it now looks like original. But not if that makes sense.
I purchased new Rims from Buchanan Spoke company the same as Swannie used.
I have ordered today new Avon tyres to suit. I have laced the rear wheel but not the front as yet. I repainted the hubs and drums.
Well that's about it up to today. And with that the shed computer died taking all of my early photo's with it. I do have some of the more recent ones if any one would like to see?
Also do I need to resize photos before I can put them up?
Thanks again

.

Great to see another old brit bike coming back together. ;D

I suggest looking at using a photo hosting service like imageshack or photobucket or whatever else there is. That makes it easier to upload and share photos across several areas, or even just multiple posts on forums. Most places are free for a certain amount of photos or usage. I've used imageshack for years and had to just recently pay for storage space upgrade, was like 8-10 bucks a year I forget which.

Saves on Tim's storage for the server as well.

Pc's are not truly dead if the hard drive is still good. Can be extracted and the filles pulled to another machine. Post every and all pictures, we love to see them!

Thank you frogman,
I'm running a program at the moment with the hard drive connected to the computer in the house. It appears to be salvaging some stuff for sure. I have documented ( taken photo's) of every nut and bolt of the BSA and one of the Vincents. As before and after.I now only have after. Never mind maybe tomorrow I'll know more.
I'll get onto the picture thing as soon as I combat the other.
Cheers

a 1963 Gold star. But I'm doing 4 bikes at once. I know I have a problem. The
other 3 being Vincent 1000's.

Oh my God... somebody pinch me... I must be dreaming!

Welcome to DTT and keep the updates coming!
frogman has good advise on the photo hosting, I use www.photobucket.com. It's a free web host and is pretty easy to set up. DTT autamatically resizes pics to a viewable level if uploaded directly using the "Atachments" at the bottom of the post page. But you are limited to 4 per post and they will always apear at the bottom of your post so you can't add text after the one you attach or between each one if you upload several...
I am giving you this advise because .... I WANT TO SEE SOME PICS!!! ;D

Thank you Hoosier Daddy,
Ill get onto pictures as soon as I can. I'm in the shed now using a laptop.
and I'd much rather be using the desktop.
Cheers

In thanks for looking at my post I thought I had better put up a picture.
I'm still retrieving photo's from my downed hard drive.
This is how i picked up the engine from my mates place. 1964 was the last time it was running.
Also went to lace up front wheel today. Actually all day. Upon assembly the rim supplied is an 18'' not 19''. Oh well these things happen. I new I should have checked ,but the rear was perfect.
The rear is done and a tyre being fitted on Monday.
Hope the picture shows up?
cheers

I'd follow along on a Vincent work log, so long as you post moar porn like that!

Yea, the right answer is that we're always interested in more pictures!

Ill leave the vincent for another day.It was used as an ashtray in the 70's.
This particular engine started out with me as completely naked. Well not completely as it had head studs( but there no longer used). But other than that it has a new Quaife 5 speed gearbox ,Terry Prince crank 30mm mains and 40mm big end. Counterbores machined to take bigger sleeves. Hence this is 1200cc not 1000. mk5 race cams all new cam and rocker spindles. 2 start oil pump . Bob Newby 40 mm Belt drive. Terry Prince top end kits.
And that is engine number 1. There is number's 2 and 3 . But that's another day. Also the Norton frame modified for engine number 2 Norvin.
Here is the ugly side

How did I miss this? Firstly, welcome aboard aboard DTT. Second, please let me know if you need anything like information, images, parts sources, dimensions etc for your Gold Star build. Thirdly, three Vincents???? That is too many and I will gladly help you out and take one off your hands...

Yes, post away and we love images, keep them coming.

Three Vincents? Wow, just wow.

Hello Swannie.
Thank you for your welcome and offers. Your pictures have already helped me with the wheels and engine.
Also thanks for the offer of taking away some of my stress by taking a Vincent of my hands. If only they where mine to give.
I know it's hard to believe ,but my mate that owns these bikes has 2 Vincent Comets as well. They need restoration also. And his brother has 2 Comets. They don't run and haven't since the 70's.
Well on with the BSA,
This photo is trying to show wear on the inlet tappet like yours.

And where does this fit?
A "C" series 1952 engine waiting for an overhaul.
Whoops sorry I'm meant to be BSA'ing.
Notice how my mate pulled this much apart in 1964? And kindly put it in a bucket for safe keeping.
