That is where your machinist will measure them.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Engine Stripped down ready for Vapor Blasting

Amazon had the best price on the Wiseco kits that i found!

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Engine Stripped down ready for Vapor Blasting

Need help: Remeasured the bored with a different tool. Initial measurements were off. Someone bored out my head to fit 65mm pistons. I broke a piston and it looks like they don't make the 65mm pistons anymore. What are my options? 79 KZ650
EBay a new head?
Put new sleeves in?
Put 64mm pistons in?

1) the pistons slide up and down inside the block. The head is on top of that and holds the valves and cams.

2) either find a different 650 block or use a 738cc/750 block. You'll probably have to have it bored
no mater what

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Need some Guidance

The plot thickens.

Since someone put 65mm pistons in this bike i decided to take another look at the cams. This is what i found.

Andrews USA Cams - Lift = .350
20 - 252 .350 - Modified engines up to 82 3000RPM+ stock springs and cups
*found this info on kzriders.com

Im thinking of going back to a stock block and stock pistons. Can I run this cam or should I go back to a stock cam?

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Need some Guidance

10 - 236 .330 - Bolt in Stock cups & springs 2500RPM+

15 - 244 .340 - Same as above but for 750cc

20 - 252 .350 - Modified engines up to 82 3000RPM+ stock springs and cups

25 - 260 .360 - 82 & Later Stock springs OK piston clearance needs checking more power from 3000RPM

30 - 270 .370 Best cam for big cc street motor. Springs, cups and collars sould be upgraded. Power comes on from 3000RPM+

35 - 274 .380 - Street/drags 800cc and up. Fully modified engines rurn on from 5000RPM up. Springs, cups, collars should be upgraded

40 - 262 .392 - Drags and big motors. Springs and cups required. Broad torque to 11000RPM

I have the 10 and 15 cam sets. Your 20s are the largest recommended for stock pistons.
The 25 and up cams require notched pistons. You should still check your clearances thou.
The 20s might be a little racey with little power down low. As for pistons, rings for standard
size 650s will be hard to find. A Wiseco piston kit is a viable alternative.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Need some Guidance

I actually already have 4 sets of standard rings. Bought them
Before I found all these mods.

So what if I eBay a stock block and bore it for the 64mm wiseco kit. Will that work fine with the cams?

Okay Neb_rex, you might know what I got here. Here at the pics and measurements of the valves.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Need some Guidance

Top of piston is always way smaller than the skirt because top of piston will expand a lot when it gets up to operating temperature (probably 350f+?)
I've only used one Martek 440, didn't like it as it failed 250 miles from home.
Initially bike would idle but dropped 2 cylinders when warmed up so I rode 230+ miles on 2cyl. Never had any luck with warranty so decided I didn't like them (this was around 1980)

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - Need some Guidance

I emailed Andrews. They were nice enough to provide me a technical sheet for their KZ650 Cams. Check it out!

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - .350 Lift Cam Info

33/27 is stock KZ650. 34/30 is the sock size for a KZ750/4. 30mm is also the stock
exhaust valve size for the KZ900/1000.

Your full of knowledge. Can't thank you enough!

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - .350 Lift Cam Info

Can anyone tell me how to identify the Andrwes cams? I bought a bike that has a set(so im told) in it and i would love to know what i got. The only casting on them is a R2 and an L i think on the exhaust.... Again these are cast numbers , nothing is stamped.

Also what you degree the cams on these fine beasts, Do you degre to the notch in the camshaft is lined up to the top of the cyl head? All my marks are just a tad off and i'm sure between cyc head decking and chain wear this is responsible.

Ideas?

Lift is measured in inches. Take the measurement of Base and Lobe Lift minus Base. As far as degree I am actually curious about that myself. Not sure.

Re: 79 Kawasaki KZ650 - .350 Lift Cam Info

you would want to get the specs for the cam , lobe centers is the best way to degree it in
