1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive hard tail

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

so i have been trucking on with this project, step by step

if you can tell by my last post, i am considering swapping from cv carbs to vm due to the fact that i will be running velocity stacks.

I have calculated my intake length and it states that I need to hit 9 inches to catch the fourth wavelength for acoustic tunning. the measurement on a 850's intake port to the back of a cv carb is 9 inches...... maybe ill shoot for the third wavelength. or i might target a lower rpm range to get a decent velocity stack length.

as for the exhaust design, i am in the process.

I ran into a few articles on torque reversion cones.... look like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/161145001320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

basically they help increase your torque on the low range of your powerband by blocking reversion soundwaves..... the info on them is found in sonrier's post about doing it right in the engines section.

they make them for the header and even one for the end of your pipe. i doubt i would go with the one that goes in the end but from everything i have read the ones up front actually work.

and if all else fails, they could be used for my xs65o project down the line.

what do you guys think about em? opinions good and bad are welcome

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Cant help too much there..... my bike came with the vm's already on em.... I'd guess the previous owner, popped em on along with the proper vm boots. pre 1980 gs850's had vm's.... I have stock jetting and i believe, my needle is one notch down from stock, slightly richer. Not saying its optimal, as I am still testing/tuning. ty for the link i will take a look at that. I hadnt given a lot of thought to the wavelength and acoustic tuning... however I did install a baffle on the intake which improved performance and sound....

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

not a whole lot going on work wise with the project/

im bogged down with theory and actual learning........... lol its all a process

im actually waiting on christmas; i should be getting some polishing gears, head gaskets and other such to get going.

my other hang up is the fact that I am building a sandblast cabinet; money is what it takes.

i think ive decided on a color scheme though; silver frame, polished forks and such, dark metallic gray tank with rising sun logo done in silver leaf.

i wont ramble on too much like before, pics should be coming soon. stay tuned

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

WoW, whole lot of nothing going on over here isnt there?

between christmas, finding out im having a baby girl and my birthday; I just had no real time to work on the bike.

However, after eyebaling the bike for ages I decided to stick with welding some downtubes to the frame. I really wanted to go with the open shaft look but longevity was a concern for me.

so with that said; in the next week or so the frame should be welded up in place. I am currently mocking up the axle plate that I will use.

What do you guys like best?

I like the bullet! and i LOVE the GS850... wish i would have never sold mine :(

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Bullet, or scallop B.....

oh and...

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Finally getting around to getting something done on this project. I went ahead and made my axle plate up based on the bullet design. It turned out pretty well and doesn’t look as odd as the scallop version would have.

Once I had this in place I used some conduit to temp up my bend angles and lengths. All the pics below are with the rigid conduit. Snce these pics were taken I have bent and profiled the tubing to fit nice and snug against the frame tubing. Everything is ready for welding and I should have that done sometime this weekend.

I also got the headlight that I found online in. probably the best $10 bucks I have ever spent. I didnt like how it was going to mount on the bottom of the triple tree so I am going to make a wedge to allow it to mount to the underside of the top triple tree. This is the look that I get.

hopefully next week I will have some more progress for you guys.

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

slowly trucking away on with this one.

I spent some time getting the solid stock cut to size to fit my axle plate. The solid stock will slide into the downtube from the frame then get welded into place. but before that happened I had to weld the axle plate to my solid stock. here we go!

Like I said in the last post. I should have the frame welded up this weekend. I plan to fully build the moto, ride it for a while then tear it down for finishing touches. well see how long that takes :)

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Looks great so far man. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Love the stance on it.

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Got in the shop and got to it this weekend. I got a lot of the welding done then ran out of gas....... ohh well. Shes all tacked up and rolls nice and easy though now.

I still need to weld a cross brace for the fender and seat pan to mount to. I also have to weld on some mounting points for the gas tank and seat pan front mount along with a few other things.

So until I get some gas I suppose I will work on my seat pan and other little projects.

heres some pics; looks the same, just solid now.

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

Great. Looks very nice man.

I have the exact same bike that i am trying to do a bobber project with it. I actually cut the rest of the frame today.

Im still trying to decide which tank to use but i think I'm gonna go with the smaller tank because it looks better with the solo seat that i got.

What do you plan to do with your seat? what kind of seat are you getting? the one that i have doest look good with the original tank. Keep that in mind. I like the size of the original tank but it doesn't flow nice with the bike.

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

My bike is a 1982 GS850GLZ

I got the second tank of eBay and its off a 79 SUZUKI GS550.

Please give feedback and help us move forward with our project.

Thanks

Re: 1983 Suzuki GS850 Shaft Drive Bobber!

On a side note. I keept stairing at your bike since this morning trying to figure out what i wanna do for my tank and seat.

It looks like you have an angle on your shaft. Its angled upward. Did you try shifting gears? I was told that you want you shaft to be straight otherwise it may be a little hard to shift gears. Also, it will depends on what you decide to do for your exhaust, but you dont have a lot of ground clearance.

Best of luck.

actually a little angle is better than straight, up or down. when its straight the needle bearings in the u-joints dont spin..

Best of luck.
