XT250 tracker kinda thing

Been Around the Block
I recently bought a cheap ass XT250, beaten up and looking rough but with a good motor and mechanicals. This build is for my wife to learn on but after my CX the last thing I wanted was something stock :)

Here it is as I brought it home, with the CX.

And as of today, after I stripped down a few things it wont be needing (stock gauges, airbox, factory carb etc). Chain guard and side panels will go on but I'll make those as I want to use my dimple dies on them.

I've lowered the stock headlight to bring the front down so it doesn't look so tall, I'm also converting it to 12v and running a trail tech vapor gauge on it along with all LED lighting. I also got ride of the 27 year old leaking NLA Mikuni VM28SS and replaced it with a spare VM34 I had.

Now I'm waiting on a 45 degree bend piece of stainless so I can mount the air filter to the carb, currently it wont fit because of the shock and frame size.

Even as it is now it will start first kick with a spray of "start ya bastard" compared to the 5 minutes of cursing with the old leaking carb

Ultimate plan is a 70's style paint job, lower it a little, make it as minimalistic as possible so it looks like a dirt bike but is street legal. I'll also use the stock seat pan and retrim/foam it for a lower profile nicer looking seat.

Not much to report other than lots of bits are starting to arrive, got the front tyre, rear on the way, more road orientated as it wont see much dirt at all, more for carving up the city traffic.

Gauge came :)

And the 12V conversion kit

Headlight also showed as well as new bars. Now waiting on battery, exhaust manifold gaskets and the adapter pieces I need to mount the remote pod filter.

looks nice, hope it will look as badass as that cx u have in the background :)

I hope so too :) I like to build my bikes to not only look good but be a mechanical improvement on the stock bike, this will be a bit quicker than stock but will run the stock forks and brakes as it's on even more of a budget than my CX was. Hopefully it'll be a little lighter as well so technically it should stop better, but that probably wont even be measurable.

Carb was a spare for my CX so it's jetted for that at the moment, I wont bother re-jetting until I have the bike a fair bit further along and then I'll swap out the slide for a 2.5 and do a few runs and go from there.

I'll grab some more pics on the weekend as I've now done a few more bits and pieces. One of the little things today was to put an angled cable guide on top of the carb so the throttle cable doesn't come straight down through the shock. It's all the little bits and pieces that will make the bike I think :)

Front end is coming along in mockup form. New bars are on, 12v headlight (smaller than stock) mounted, digital dash on but needs a bracket made to mount it lower in front of the ignition switch. I'm keeping the switch where it is as I want to keep the steering lock. Also test fitted the guard I made a while ago, this was on my CX until I did a front end swap, it fits the XT nicely.

Since the bike is for my wife I thought I better see what she though of it, thumbs up so far.

The XT has a looong way to go before it's on the road, but I'll be riding out to throttle roll for a look on the CX :)

Got the battery today (Sealed GEL 12V 4AH), nice and small and there are plenty of options to tuck it away, the pics are just to show the size. I also stripped the seat down and I must say I like plastic seat pans :) Should be able to use it for the new seat and the look I'm after.

Old fuel tank on, as it had some fuel in it still. A little tweak of the VM34 and it starts and runs like a champ :) Had my safety uggs on as well. Now to sort some cables so I can take it for a spin. Sounds like rubbish though since half the exhaust gases are coming out around the header ;)

Since the rear tyre should show tomorrow I thought I'd paint the spare rim, since this is a very budget build I decided it didn't warrant pulling it all apart and powder-coating so I went with some epoxy etch primer and epoxy black paint. Should suit the overall colour scheme.

Completed the VM34 carb conversion (other than the jetting) thanks to a 45 degree bend piece of stainless tube. I can now run a decent filter with inbuilt velocity stack

My rear tyre also turned up yesterday as expected, I think they should work really well as a road tyre with occasional gravel and dirt road use.

What kind of tires are those If you don't mind me asking. I'd love to run something like that on my tracker build. Thanks!

They are Michelin Sirac, I grabbed them because I got a great deal on them, normally they are not the cheapest but they are supposed to be a good tyre.

Forks freshened up, the ribs on the lower section will be stripped back and polished. There is some pitting on the uppers, on the area not covered by the boots, so I will vinyl wrap them once they are on the bike, probably in a black.
