More than the engine is worth.

Yes. It's an expensive process. So it may cost more than the motor is worth... to irk.

The value is in the application and what its worth to you not the cost of the process. I could spend an entire day cleaning and never get that result. I have seen these motors get to several thousand dollars in internal parts for racing only to last a few races and be torn down again.

That said, I take what I do seriously and even though it takes me a long time to complete a project the end result is usually Nice, but something that cost me much more in time and money than I will ever recover from a sale. I get my satisfaction in the love of what I do and the learning along the way.

I didn't take it personally, I simply stated my reason for paying for what I enjoy.

Sorry you were annoyed ???

That's kind of the same reason I figured I would pay the few extra bucks to get it soda blasted rather than me spending hours scrubbing. I rather not revisit it because of a shitty paint job just because I didn't do it right the first time.

Not a whole lot of progress, but did end up ordering some parts for fuel delivery; Mikuni VM36, motion pro CR throttle, motion pro throttle cable, and a uni filter. Also, the oil seals came this week and I installed the seals for the clutch pushrod and output shaft. The cases are sealed together now but I am waiting on my head to come back from soda blasting and my cam chain tensioner guides.

In the mean time I'm getting ready to paint the side covers; there is some heavy pitting and some deep scratches/gouges. I may fill it with some JB before paint. Changed some of the wires from the coil aswell. Swing arm has been primed too.

I'm found some good info on jet specs for the Mikuni VM36 for use on xl350's, it wills serve as a good starting point once I get an exhaust. From the Mikuni stock specs it seems I may be able to get away with changing just the main jet to get it at least running.

Today I picked up the engine head from the soda blaster as well as the Mikuni carb from the post office. As previously noted, the spigot diameter of the VM36 is 3mm larger in OD than the stock Keihin carb. I ended up turning down the diameter slightly on my lathe so that it fits nicely in the stock carb boot.

Initially I figured I would paint the engine head to match the cylinder, satin black. After just placing the head on the engine, I am really liking the contrast of the black and blasted aluminum. I will likely keep it the way it is, blast the pieces I was going to polish, and clearcoat them.

Ill be dropping the head off at a Machine Shop (Gord Bush Perfromance) tomorrow to get the valve seats cut and the valves ground. Until I get it back, Ill be working on an exhaust; I ordered an Emgo shorty reverse cone exhaust from EBay. I dont have a 1.5" die for my tube bender, so Ill look into finding a local tube bending shop. Im going to need to find another throttle cable; the Motion Pro cr throttle does not work with the throttle cable I bought.

Its been a long time since I updated this thread. Since last time, I received my new intake valves from XLint performance and I brought the head to Gord Bush Performance to have the valve seats cut and the valves ground. I blasted all the misc aluminum parts then clearcoated them. The engine has been assembled and I have mounted it in the frame so that I can mock up an exhaust to fit an Emgo reverse cone exhaust. In the mean time, gonna work on the ignition system.

I need to buy a new throttle cable and throttle to fit the VM36. Can anyone recommend a throttle and cable?? Im having a hard time finding the right combo.

My carb is not jetted. Comparing the stock VM36 jetting to jet specs of others it looks like I need to change just the main jet to the range of 210-230.

That's the one I bought, doesn't fit the motion pro CR throttle. And its too short to reach the bars
