I picked up this little beauty yesterday for $100. My original thought was to rip its guts out and give my 1978 KZ400 a displacement increase and some cooler rims. Thoughts? Advice?
Keep the 400 wheels on the 400. Turn the 440 into what ever you want. They make nice bobbers. If you look under the specials, you'll see my build. I went more standard/sport. I was going to cafe it, but the lines are not ideal.
The USA got a KZ440G for maybe a year. It looked like your KZ400 with the 440 engine and 18" mag wheels f/r. I thought it was the best looking model. I've seen some KZ400 standards with LTD wheels - not a bad look. The LTD frame is tough to work with if you want something other than a bobber, but if you get the bottom of the seat level with the tank it looks like a little Bonneville.
I paid the same price for my 80 kz440. I took it home and got it to fire. Once it did I decided to tear into it. Most parts are cheap for these bikes and I really enjoyed this being my first build.
