Cookie_M0nster's TX500 Build.

So it's about time I get a build thread together. I recently found a pair of bikes on Craigslist for dirt cheap. My score included a 1973 TX500 and a 1973 RD350. Both were in less than perfect shape and looked like they had been sitting outside for at least 20 years. After I got them home and unloaded I put together a budget and a game plan in order to get the TX back in one piece and rideable. I also found some inspiration from other members on DTT as well as other sites and forums.

Right now I am working on getting the TX running. Since the engine if had for the TX was already missing the cylinders, a piston and a few other things I went ahead a found a complete replacement on eBay. I also picked up new carbs, a gasket set, piston rings, new points and condenser, and I also picked up a lockset and key because I don't have keys for the bikes. I figure if the motor is out already might as well just go through it and know that it's good and rebuilt.

And now on to some pictures! My vision for the TX is to make it into a modified tracker/bobber. I am in no way a purist when It comes to any of my vehicles/projects. With that being said the color combo is going to be Pearl White tank and side covers, with a gloss black frame and wheels. I'm also going to I with a shortened seat and all LED lighting.

This is my first motorcycle and I absolutely can't wait to get working on it and learning as much as I can about it!

Small update today: received my gasket set in the mail, and I also ordered up a new cam chain master link, and some shiny new header pipes. Once that stuff gets here the motor "should" be ready to fire off. This week I'm taking off of work so I will be able to start tearing down the motor to see what I have. The piston rings should be here this week as well.

Today I started tearing down the engine. I got it down to the cylinders and got stuck. Turns out the right piston is stuck in the bore. So now everything is soaking in penetrant oil in hopes of breaking it loose tomorrow with a 2x4 and a big ass hammer. I was able to pull the cam chain gear off and see in to the crankcase a bit and the crank looks like it's in good shape but there is some minor surface rust in the bore, it doesn't look terrible and should come out with a good hone.

Today I made a great breakthrough!! I was able to get that piston unstuck!! What I did was get a lot of hot water and was able to get the stuck piston heated up and then followed that with some ice to cool down the piston. After letting it sit for a while I took a big piece of wood and a 2lb mallet and after a few good minutes of beating on it the piston finally started to come out! Now the cylinders are off and I can continue with the engine build. I'm so excited and can't wait to get this thing back together.
