Hey, I think this is on the same weekend as the Barber Cafe show, but if you can't make it there, the Grassroots Motorsports $2009 Challenge is something else to check out. It's a car event, but I bet you'll find they share a similar build mentality.
Participants are allowed the year's date for their budget allowance, so this year's limit is $2009. The competition is divided into three events; autocrossing, drags, and concourse (which judges more based upon ingenuity rather than polish). I don't have any affiliation, but it's a great group of people to hang out with.
