'73 CB250 - Doing it right this time round.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Thinking about sidecovers,...have you thought of something similar to the stuff Classified Moto does ?

This is the way I plan doing the sidecovers on my CB750 I think it looks pretty cool ;)

They're not bad, but because their kind of translucent, they wouldn't hide the horrible battery + battery box. Unless I can fab one up that looks a little better, and If I can, they would look pretty good actually! I'm going to pick up some paint and a few more bits today so I'll look for something to make an Inner rear fender and some covers out of.

Currently away at university, but get back home in about 2 weeks and get to work on my bike again :D...so this may be moved into the builds section soon...

Finally got playing around with photoshop..was mucking around with a few designs and ended up with this. Looks a bit too modern for an old school cafe but I do like this design. What do you guys think?

Read throu most of your thread and agree with everyone...keep the fairing. Makes it unique! .I love this design with a few ideas on some changes take them or leave them...I love the bolted on Apocalypse "mechanical" look. I like the big distressed logo over unpainted steel...maybe even get it to rust a bit then sand and clear right over the rust. You could even carry the exposed bolted on pattern throughout the seat and tank and side covers....could be a really sweet design... Almost like this one. Except with your sweet ass fairing...just a thought...it would be a sweet grunge look.

My two cents

My two cents

That bike is really sweet! I love the look of that. I'm going to complete the bike (as much as any bike is ever completed haha) and then see if I can add the fairing in later. I'm not too bothered about it being on there at the moment. The lines just don't seem right for it, mainly the wind shield. If I can adapt it and make it fit the image I'm heading for then Ideal, if not, no waste.

Anyway..

Got the frame in Primer and picked up some paint for it today. Its a Metallic Graphite colour. I'm going to add a bit of dark detailing around all the joins/sharp edges on the frame.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Mr Green, you are right on the money with your observations about the fairing. It appears to be a copy of the old AVON Avonaire (sp?) and they came with a short/tall screen. Yours has been adapted to take a later racing type full bubble screen and the screen is too low at the rear and not well integrated.

You could approach that from two angles. get a smaller screen that works better with the fairing shape - or - modify the fairing to give it a pair of top ears to work with that screen. The latter sounds daunting but it's not so hard and we have to do it when a race bike crashes and snaps them off and grinds them into tiny pieces. basically what you do is to prep the fairing and then tape on a stiff card and tape side ear and support the fairing on its side while you lay up 3 layers of glass on one side and when that's done roll it over and repeat on the other side.

If you think you might like to fit the fairing at some time in the future, now is the time to get a couple of brackets welded to the frame so you can "upgrade' later on.

Good spot Teazer, it does seem to be an Avonaire copy. (Yes I had to google it haha). It's definitely not the standard screen I knew that for sure when I got it. It just seems to have been crudely drilled and bolted on. I'll see If I can get a few pics up to show you what I'm talking about.

I'll start looking around on eBay and such for a screen that seems to fit the shape better as it seems the easier and quicker option (If I can find something that is). I have never worked with fibre glass before so I'm a bit reluctant to give it a go, although the way you described seems a relatively simple method of doing it. I'll post a drawing later of what I'm envisioning you mean by 'top ears'.

There shouldn't be a problem with attaching the fairing as all the Bracket's just bolt on, which will make it very easy for me to add the fairing to the bike If I can get it to look decent.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Excuse the extremely crude photoshop, but something like this?

The screen at the moment is just bolted onto the actual fairing at the front, but along the sides it is mounted to a pipe which runs along the top edge inside the fairing itself. It's really not supported well at all.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Spot on. Look at other fairings for idea and if you do make them, they should be larger than you want and that way you can trim them back to the exact shape you want.

Or look at what you could do to make that screen really small like the original. The fairing is a copy so it's unlikely that a replica screen will be perfect, but it will give you some ideas.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Finally got around to spraying/ageing the headlight and front fender.

Just used the same method as before. Sprayed the intended design. Then added layers off other colours, wet sanded and scraped away with a scouring pad.

I had already put the parts on the bike before I got around to taking pictures so you may not be able to see it properly but they are the only photos I have.

The hole in the top of the headlight bucket is for the relocated starter button.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

I finished spraying the frame too in a metallic graphite colour.......looks the balls!

Put the front end and the swingarm/shocks back on. Re-assembled the newly painted tank mounts and condenser brackets and put them back on the frame. This just looks brand new I love it!

I then put the tank and seat on the frame. This is where I became extremely indecisive again. Because the paint looks just too good, the 'aged and rustic' bodywork just doesn't look right...

..and I can't bring myself to make the frame look old! So the 'temporary' paint job/scheme may be leaving quicker than I thought.

So I'm thinking of respraying the headlight bucket a nice satin black, and then either spraying the tank and seat in the original grey or going no holes barred straight away and trying to do the gulf scheme.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Also, would anybody be able to check and see if I have the dust seals for the swingarm set in the right place?

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

The seals look right to me and I agree 100%, "aged" is past it's use by date. Crisp and clean looks good.

Ideal. Couldn't find my manual and couldn't remember the order/where I took them off from.

Thanks very much Teazer.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

Yeah man i am sorry but the "patina" "rustic" "aged" thing is lost on me seems like an excuse to cover up lousy paint work. No offense. I say you knuckle down and do your paint over meticulously and you will be happy with the result. I have had my share of paint mishaps and you really need to be painting in a booth doing meticulous time consuming prep work and a laid out practiced technique. It took me probably 2 weeks, and $150 to paint my bike but it was very much worth it. You would pay 3x that to have it painted professionally.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

i respectfully disagree. i really like the patna look. a lot of people try it and it looks aweful. i think your doing a fantastic job.

Haha that is exactly the reason I aged it in the first place! ;D I spent quite a few days trying to get the paint right and it just didn't turn out nice enough. I know there area's where I could improve, but I think the finish from a rattle can, in my personal hands anyway, is never going to look nice enough to run a 'clean' paint job.

That being said, the 'rustic' tank and seat at the moment really don't suit the frame as it is. So it looks like i'm going to have to try redoing the paint, or if not, call in a few favours and see If I can get it done professionally on the cheap.

thanks man! I do like the way the tank and seat turned out, but it just doesn't 'click' with me at the moment.

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

i know green i have watched your build from day 1 alot of potential. Here's a pic of my "rattle canned" tank.

Wow man! That looks sweet! Just looked through the other pics in your thread and the paint turned out real nice...as did the rest of the bike!

Mind telling me how/the method you used to get it looking that nice?

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

There is a fantastic how to thread on Rattle can paint, man. Check it out here:

Re: '73 CB250 - 'Rustic Racer' conversion.

I'm currently laying a rattle can paint job on mine. Seems to be coming out alright. I'm following the steps in the Rattle can Bling thread in the paint section. I'm almost 2 weeks into working on it. Patients is the key on it from what I can tell.
The frame paint looks great
