Title: CB350/360 starter block off plug, speedo spacers, tach plugs
Post by: crazypj on Feb 12, 2011, 23:33:14
I made a couple of different starter block off plugs for my CB360 (see build thread, link in sig)
Fitted the original one (Mk II  ;D ) and locktited the bolts in so I have a couple spare.

The bit you see on the outside, they all look the same
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k315/1crazypj/Honda%20CB360/CB360starterblockoff.jpg)

I modified them, they all weigh less than 2oz 1.5oz or less (1.47~1.49oz)
$32.50 including shipping

BTW, I checked ebay, $29.99 + shipping for a 4oz solid plug

SEE Post #70 for more pictures of correct fitting inside case

USPS is raising prices today (27th Jan 2013)
They raised them last year (27th Jan2012) but I didn't increase shipping
Unfortunately, I can't afford to do the same this year.
Don't know eaxct increase yet (as I haven't shipped anything with new charges)
It shouldn't be more than $1.00 though
First person to order starter plug gets it at the old price

OK, the bad news.
Postage rates are around 75~100% higher for small packages/'international' mail

I can't cut costs so prices will have to reflect new postal rates.

 Yep, and stainless wave washers.
Probably a good idea to use a smear of sealant on plug and Loctite on screws

Title: Re: CB350/360 starter block off plug
Post by: crazypj on Feb 20, 2011, 18:35:02
If it has a starter motor it should be standard Honda size so it will fit, although I thought CL's didn't have an electric starter?
The 'hole' is 1.805"~1.807" CB350 was 1.800" but it's a bit dirty (oxidised)
I'm cutting up the rest of the bar and will be making more soon as a lot more people are asking about them.

won't be making any more until I get some 2" dia bar and my bandsaw fixed (I ain't cutting 2" by hand  :o )
Bar is on order, saw, when I get time (got an engine re-build to do and still haven't gotten bike stripped for paint)

I have 3 sets but I think one is sold?
I bought more 2" bar but can't cut it up yet  ::)
Probably going to make some speedo/tach block offs this weekend

Good news (sort of  ::) )
I stripped band saw motor and found it has a fusible link to protect stator wiring.
 bad news is, its blown.
They are available in Europe so I ordered a few
Going to take at least 3 weeks though.
Then I can cut up the bar I bought and make some more plugs and stuff  8)

Post by: crazypj on Apr 11, 2011, 02:16:16
Couldn't wait for parts from Europe so I bought some stuff local and 'fixed' electric motor for band saw.
Well, it lasted for 4 cuts in 2" bar before the magic smoke leaked out  :(
But, I do have blanks to make 3 plugs if anyone is interested?

 I don't know about 450.
Can you measure the starter nose or crankcase hole? (accurately)
If it's about 1.800" it will fit but depth may need modifying?
I have one plug ready if anyone want's it and can make one in the morning tomorrow before I go to work.
I'm having second surgery on my arm on 8th June and don't know when I'll be able to make anything after that, got a lot of stuff to do in next few weeks

Need someone with a CB450 to measure the hole size, it's probably same as 350/360 but don't know for sure.

i'll measure next weekend, or tomorrow if I have a second. What specifics do you need? Diameter only, or more info? I was recently looking into plugging up the hole for mine and was thinking of using a brass freeze plug, but your option looks great.

Well, did you 'get it in'  ;D

I have a few made, can supply slightly different diameters (only a few thousandths of inch difference)
CB350 seems to be smaller than 360 by about 0.003"~0.005", still don't have a CB450 case to measure but it looks like it's same as 360

No problem, stuff happens all the time

Well, I had a look at the eBay ones and they list it as fitting 450 so I guess it fits DOHC 450  8)
I have a couple roughed out, need finishing off. (I think I mentioned I got some started before surgery)
I can probably do them right handed, it will just take a lot longer, not a problem, I have time at present  ;D (takes about 40 mins to finish from where they are now, with both hand's working  :o )

This piece looks nice. Just an FYI- my honda CB200t starting hole opening is 1.806" and about .6" deep or so. I am thinking this might work on that bike as well. Are you able to post pics of the item from front and back so I can see how its mounted. If it looks like it will work, I will probably get one and can verify it fits for you on the 200s, which I guess would mean it would also work on the cb175.

It was planned in March before everything went 'tits up'

Stub mount or flange mount?
Any particular length or same as last ones I made?

For a 360-I'm not sure about the difference between stub mount or flange mount-I'm going to be making my own manometer out of tubing and a yardstick so whatever works with that is great.  as far as length goes I'll defer to your judgment-you're on about your 4th or 5th generation on these things arent you?-You'll know what works better than me.  Time frame is great-no rush-I'm trying to get my xj650 running right now anyway soI won't get to the CB anytime soon.  I'm just hoping to get it running by the time snow falls (got about a month and a half tops)

Stock carbs are stub mount, they push into rubber boot.
Some of the after market Mikuni have two bolts to mount onto a flange.
make flange to stub converters to use the stock intake boots.

Hi All,
There seems to be confusion with some people how the plug fits.
I assumed it was self evident as anyone working on their own bike would be mechanically inclined(doh, shouldn't make assumptions)
Anyway, here's the 'ded' CB350 case I use to check they fit properly
1. From the outside, not fully pushed 'home' as it's only there for pics
How it looks from the outside
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k315/1crazypj/Honda%20CB360/Starterplugfitting-2.jpg)

2. From the inside, turn plug to get screws in best position.
It will work with only one screw but I like things to be symmetrical (some motors can only use one screw, there are variations in cases) When permanently fitting, I like to smear some sealant around plug and also Loctite screws in position.
The 'O' ring prevents dirt/water getting into the opening so it can be removed if you want to re-fit electric starter in the future, if it was moved further in you could get corrosion in there which could damage bore.
I forgot to mention, if you have corrosion in bore from stock starter motor, you need to clean it out with scraper/emery cloth/sandpaper or whatever
It doesn't need any cross pieces, the screws only need to 'overlap a few thousandths on an inch to stop it falling out
(http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k315/1crazypj/Honda%20CB360/Starterplugfitting-3.jpg)

I don't know what happened to pictures, they were still on photobucket.
I've reloaded them on post

I made more shiny bits.  ;)
Neevo wanted a speedo drive eliminator spacer so I made an extra one
It's for CB360 but will fit 350 and 400f if you can either run without speedo or are using an electronic one so don't need speedo drive on hub
Here's pics

Post by: crazypj on May 26, 2012, 20:18:59
I already make speedo/tach plugs but I don't make them like that
I make mine different so weather/water cant get inside
'O' ring is just under flange.
They will fit 550 as it's pretty much same set up as 360
I also make them so you don't have to remove cam cover to take the drive gears out so I guess mine are far superior ;D
I don't have any pics of latest version, they use a smaller 'O' ring that works with flat and countersunk cam covers. They even fit CB/CM400T  with slight modification to flange

This was the MkI version that needed the drive gear removed, made it 3~4 yrs ago

It's a hobby not a business, I make a couple at a time, depending how bad my back feels, sometimes takes a day or so.
I think I have one almost finished, center hasn't been milled out
I'll check later

Hi All, couple of people contacted me before Christmas about tach plugs.
I've got a couple
One thing I noticed though, not all motors have a chamfer around hole, CB350 has sharp edge on some motors
Here's what CB360 looks like, you can see chamfer around hole
Without it, the 'O' ring may hang upmaking screw difficult to fit (btw, clean it up if its as dirty as mine  ;) )

OK, I think everyone has stuff in the mail?
USPS no longer need to have delivery confirmation stickers so I don't have the names
Except for the ones going back with carbs, everyone else should have them by Wednesday next week (6th Feb)
If you ordered a starter block off and it isn't with you by the end of next week, drop me a line
Still don't know what 'regular' postage will be, Priority Mail has gone up from $6.00 to $7.95 ('regular' was $2.80)

Yup they just raised their rates big time for international shipments.  I know medium Flat Rate box used to be $47.50 and now is $59.75 for international.   They suck but are till the cheapest for small to medium size shipments.  Anything heavy or large I use DHL.

Thanks CrazyPJ!!, I installed my starter block off cap last night and it went well. I almost stripped one of the bolts because it didn't look like the o ring was seating all the way and I almost over tightened it... Other than that it turned out great.. Looks good on 450, first time I've seen picture of one fitted.
For anyone who didn't know, 450 has a smaller 'extension' on crankcase so bolts need to be off set slightly compared to 350/360
 Did you Loctite bolts?
BTW, I would pull rotor and remove all the starter clutch parts, saves another pound or so

I did use loctite per your instructions.. I did not pull the rotor and I have it back together now.. overhauling the engine next winter so I'll do it then. I may try to shed more weight then too  ;) thanks again, it looks great. Feel free to keep the pictures for showing off to anyone wanting to get it for the 450's.

Yep I'm still here, last 6 weeks or so have been totally crazy though, all sorts of stuff going wrong.  :(
Grandson is 18 months old now, learned to run and thinks it's great fun to play on 'the big kids' equipment over park, keeps doing 'gravity' experiments rolling soccer ball down the 'twirly whirly' slides then goes down after it. I have to use the stairs, lost almost 20lbs in less than 3 months (no, I'm not trying to lose weight)
Still haven't replaced the pipes in 'laundry' but leak is down to a couple of drips and garage has dried out pretty well.
Getting caught up with carbs for 360's, finishing off some starter plugs and still in process of re-building a 360 cylinder head.
Things are going slow but they are still going  ;D

Still $35.00 including shipping lower 48. Canada is about $3.50 more for shipping, rest of world, haven't checked for about 2 yrs but would be at cost. Vacuum adapters still $10.00 pair plus shipping/bubble mailer ($5.00 lower 48)

Just made some alloy handlebar mounts to replace the worn out rubber mounts. If anyone want's some with 12mm hole, $20.00 plus shipping. If you want them to mount LED, will have to have LED size plus make a different method of holding them in place. I think I have a way of doing it.

Hope these go over well. I've thought about making them, just never took the time to sit down and measure the taper. I sell a ton of them for the XS. That 40 year old rubber is junk.

Best of luck with them!

In 2016 I was asked to make a cap for CB450 tach drive. Well, I ended up making several, from 12x1.25 to 16x 1.25mm, 5 or 6 different sizes and thread pitches.. None of them fit. Finally found out early CB450's use a 12x1.00 thread for the tach cable. It's same size as a C50 from same era.  With small diameter and fine thread it was kinda 'interesting' to machine recess for the internal o-ring. It sucked that I didn't find the 12x1.00 tap I had until yesterday, (had it for 25yrs or so) Only found it after I bought replacement. Here's a pic's, it's going in the mail tomorrow.

Nice work, PJ.  Seeing that reminds me that I need to find something similar to cover the place where the Kawi Ninja speedo cable attaches down by the front axle... that or I need to make a new spacer and replace the feed unit down there all together.

Not sure how the Ninja one fits together or it's diameter.? Cap would be 'cheaper' if you know the diameter and thread. (I probably lost money on the 450 through making so many and shipping) The 450 cap took a long time because I had measured all the cables I have here(and drives) plus several CB450 tach cable mounts. I never knew the 450's had so many different sizes. If you want a speedo spacer send me a pm
