Here's mine:

As of late, I put the Racer X  "X" across the front and down the back of it, with tape.  I like it so much, I think I'm gonna spray it on and clear over it.

My '77 Buco. Silver with a blue bubble visor (I added the visor). Unused (ok, I wore it twice), and still in the original box.

My Bombardier snowmobile helmet, with cutom artwork by our own Pawn, and a custom liner by Kanticoy:

Crappy pics of my unknown make, red flake with pinstriping by an old friend. It was one of his first big "projects" but I think it came out awesome. Was shooting for a real vintage, hand made vibe:

Im waiting on another custom painted lid from our man Josh in Cali (Hurley). That will be cool. Very art deco/classyish.

Aaaaand I just won the helmet you see ove in the Rock and Ride ad on the DTT home page. Pretty stoked. Its some AMAZING work.

Theres more, but I dont have pics. Theyre just garage art.

Bought for $29 on eBay (after shipping) then given to the talented Jeff Wolf for striping.  It's hard to tell in the pictures, but the clear layer on this helmet is really thick, so the pinstriping actually casts a shadow on the helmet.  I love it.

You wanna know why? All metalflake and a few other vintage lids are clear plastic, and have the inside painted. So , if you have a vintage lid that is scuffed up or looking dis-colored all ya need is one of the $10 plastic headlight polishing kit from Auto Zone and an hour. You can make them look like new!

I was looking recently and looks like biltwell and bell are the front runners. I really like the custom speed and soul 3/4 from bell I saw it for $104. I have been wanting a 3/4 I have a half hjc and a full face for long rides or winter time.

What I am curious about will I need ear plugs with the 3/4 I wear them with half helmet and do great job.

I really like the goggles! However, after about a year of use, part of the dual-density foam de-laminated. Not really a bit deal. I just pulled apart one layer of the foam and I still used them. However, I've now put a shield on the helmet. I still have another helmet that I can use the goggles with.

Got $15?

I just went out and bought a cheap paintball mask and went to town with a razor and then a snap tool to mount it to the helmet.

i just might have to try that! how hard was is to snap the mask into the helmet?

I guess it would depend on the paintball mask, but not really very hard.  I just shaved off the upper part of the mask I didn't want, drilled 2 holes per side (cheekbone area) slid it in the helmet to where it was comfortable, and then marked where the holes contacted the "ear flap," and then used some snaps and a snap tool/hammer to put snaps on the flaps and the mask.

Keep in mind though, that this works best with helmets like that old LSI one I used because they have such a large ear flap that you can attach to, some of my other helmets have ear flaps that are connected to the helmet and would be hard to do the same thing with.

Friend of mine wearing it when she met me up at bdubs:

Re-lining was easy, just sticky.  There's a good write up under "Greatest Hit" "How-to reline your helmet" on the Chopcult forum.

Did this up last weekend...

I don't plan on using it, 'cause I prefer to wear a full face lid (buy my wife wants to wear it for snowboarding! ;D). I painted this up more as a tester for how I want to paint my XS.

Cheers,
-Jeff

Do you know if the helmet was sanded down before it got painted , i want to have an artist friend do my helmet but i want to put on a coat of rusty brown colored paint and i dont know if i need to sand it down and then paint it with base color , then have the art put on , then clear coat it or how to do it.

Is it a vintage helmet? Old ones are smooth plastic shells that have been painted from the inside unless it's a solid color that's been molded in colored plastic. Anyhow... Of you're painting on plastic, you do want to evenly scuff the surface before the base coat. Paint + glass smooth surfaces = peeling paint. Make sure you use a primer made for plastic as well.

Now, some vintage helmets are fibreglass that has been painted. If the paint is in good condition than just scuff and spray. A nice coat of filler primer (in both instances) is always nice. Let it dry completely and wet sand it. Prep is key to a good paint job.

Now, if there are decals on the helmet, they'll obviously need removed. Not just the decal but any remaining adhesive. Remember the whole " prep is key"?

Now for the disclaimer...

If your painting a vintage lid, this doesn't matter as your helmet stopped being functional from a safety standpoint a loooong time ago. But if you're going to paint a new bucket, be aware that paint is made of chemicals. Chemicals that oft times react very poorly with plastic. Some paints (More so the solvents used to keep it liquid In the can) will ruin the integrity of the shell, rendering the helmet basically useless from a safety standpoint.

Now, get to work...

Its a modern bucket, i figured i would have to sand back all the paint i can, them put a filler primer on it (it has had a used life in a few places) then spray it with the color before having it drawn on and clear coated. That is the correct process right ?

A bit of a myth.. The company's put out the warning as a liability to cover their own asses. Really, what it means is, a custom painted helmet has no way of showing any damage already done, since it has been painted over.

Sure, a custom painted helmet may effect the warranty, but it has no structural effect on the helmet itself.

Bell even has a list of custom painters right on their webpage.

What part is the myth? The part where I say that some paint can negatively effect plastic? That is 100% fact. Not that it matters. Moat people here are more concerned with fashion and arguing anyway.

No, liquid graphite, ebony stick and black paint, sealed with flat clear.
Ink markers make a weird purple-ish sheen to things, not a fan.

Here is my updated 3/4 collection (always changing) Silver helmet is an old LSI, the red one is an old Sears model, and the black is a Biltwell novelty. I modify and mount the masks myself:

Whatever paintball mask looks like it will fit whatever helmet I am modifying at the time - there is only so much room in the ear flaps to attach anything to depending on the helmet.  If you can get an old LSI, they have the most wiggle room for mounting points (snaps, rivets, velcro, whatever you 'd like)

Thanks! I've heard from others that the Bell is actually a little bit slimmer but it's probably only a negligible difference.  Also, Biltwell just sent out a recall on one of their helmets according to a local store.

The RockHard looks quite a bit narrower than the Hustler. Have you ever had them side by side. I like the fit of my Hustler just not how big it looks on my head.

I think my Rockhard looks a little, very little, "mushroomy," but my friends say it looks great. Found mine at the Chaparral Motorsports parking lot sale in San Bernarghetto, California a couple of weeks ago. They're usually about a hundred bucks, but these were marked at $69, and they charged me $54 including tax. Couldn't pass that up.

I got the one with the silver metal flakes and red liner. Never planed to get a helmet that matched my bike, but this one sure does.

Thanks.  The pictures look quite a bit less 'mushroomy' than the Hustler.   Man I've scored some great deals at Chaparrals parking lot sales.  God I miss SoCal.  As soon as our girls are done with school we are so moving back.

Their new El Fuente helmet got recalled. There was some problems with the DOT testing.

I was wondering where the eff they went! Thanks for confirming.
