Hey all, already posted in the intro section, but I figured I would make an official build thread. I'll keep it short. Here are some photos.

I'm a man of few words, so for that I apologize. I realize there isn't much to ask about yet, but if anyone has any questions about my build along the way, don't hesitate to ask.

Looks like a great start.  I really like the seat.  What's your plans with this bike?

Thanks, guys. The seat is actually not staying. I'm throwing down something a little thinner.

My intentions for the bike are to strip everything down including the forks and engine (which is completed) and rebuild it lighter and focus on the vintage dual sport vibe that the bike inherently has.

Maybe I will just make a burger bike. Frame is already brown... Sesame seed seat. Burger tank, it writes itself.

You are obviously a lucky man with bikes and the ladies.  Love the bike and those grips are going to be special - Bowie knife grips - I'd love a set in brass and Amber.  I'd pick tank design number three, the others look good on paper, but I think three will look stylish and unfussy on the bike.  Keep up the good work.

Rad grip idea man. How do you plan to cap off the ends?

I'm partial to tank 1 & 4. Something really cool about the simpleness of 1 though.

going to be a killer bike.  i think option three of the tank layouts is the most awesome, personally.  #1 has been played out but number three just looks classy.  grips are badass already, can't wait to see the final product.  way to go bud.

So, tonight I gave a go at painting my headers. Since my headers were bare metal, I wanted to do something to them that would keep it low maintenance and looking slick. Pipe wrap isn't for me and high temp paints don't come in a vast array of colours. So here's what I decided to do. I went out and bought some VHT header paint in white. The stuff only comes in aerosol (at least in Canada) so I decided to do a little customization. Release the gas from the can, cut it open, and poured it into a mixing bottle. I live right next to a sherwin williams so I asked them for some tints which they kindly gave me for free. I wanted to adjust the colour of the paint to a cream colour to match my tank, but needed something that wouldn't alter the high temp compound. I wasn't entirely sure how the tints would hold up to the heat.

Here's my tints.

Headers ready for paint.

Went to 250°, colour is looking great. Then to 400°, still looking fantastic.

Cranked it up to the final 600°, and something went terribly wrong.

Just tuned into this one. Lookin pretty good so far. As many have already pointed out., your grip idea is pretty sweet. I wouldnt mind seeing some other minor leather detals. Nothing real crazy as you may find on Harleys but perhaps something a little discrete. Never heard of painting bike bits with nail polish. Lemme know how that holds up.

The grips are coming along, but that jade is pretty difficult to work with. I'll figure it out. I'm all ears for other leather details, although the seat is also going to be pretty labor intensive as I'll be upholstering it myself.

Got my headers and SS mufflers in place. Damn, those mufflers are pretty.

The pipe wrap isn't long for this world, but I needed an immediate alternative to my pastel pink headers. A friend had some extra laying around, so i threw it on there. When I get my shop up and running next year, I'll fab up some SS headers to tie into the mufflers.

There is a type of superglue overhere that i think might work, itīs suppose to "be like metall" and since itīs probably from the US you should be abel to get it in Canada. Maybe thatīs what JB Weld is?

this made me laugh my arse off for some reason.  :)

Anyways, i like your build so far!  aside from that crack, looks like it was going smoothly.  Can I ask what you are doing with the jade?  I do a lot of lapidary and jewelry work so that was particularly interesting to me.

Sorted out the crack, so I have that going for me. You do lapidary work eh? Then maybe you can give me some tips. The plan was to cut the jade into discs and put one disc on each grip. Like an inlay. But I'm having a very difficult time cutting it. Used all kinds of wheels on my dremel including a stone cutting disc, but since it's battery powered I just don't think it has enough gusto to get through it. I unfortunately might ditch the idea if i can't get the discs cut out. Any thoughts?

Post by: mono on Oct 18, 2012, 12:03:36
oh, get it now!  yeah, jade is a very hard stone.  if you're trying to cut discs similar to your leather ones, it would take a lot of work, especially for an inside cut.  i'm thinking that this would work as long as you put a rubber spacer between the inside of the jade discs and the handlebar itself, and made sure it wasn't a tight fit.

The Dremel will work, but isn't going to be easy, and you'll want diamond bits, etc... and you'll need to wet-cut the stone.    UGH i feel bad for you because it would take you forever...  :-\ PM me if you like and we can figure something out if you'd like me to cut them for you.

**edit - i was looking at the slab of jade again.  is there enough space on it to cut out your discs without one of the cracks getting in the way?  the stone would definitely split along those cracks, sooner or later -- usually sooner/during cutting.

I appreciate the advice and the offer to help man! I think I'm just going to chalk this one up to a failed attempt. Haha. Besides, I'm still going to try and make the leather grips as I think they can hold their own.

What about a diamond hole saw, drill press, water/oil to cool it?  Then a smaller holesaw for the inside? well cut the smaller hole first. I think Princess auto has them relatively cheap.

Okay pals, small update. I wanted to to tint my headlamp lens but not so much that it would have an effect on running colour, as I would be pulled over more than I would like. So I figured photography gels would help me achieve this.

Went to open my headlight and I discovered that it was sealed. After looking for some time on the net for unsealed options, I came up short. This is due to sealed lamps being law in most places. I didn't have a heat gun and I'm impatient so I crossed my fingers and threw it in the oven.

Which actually worked really well.

Figured I'd heat test the light, which is probably overly cautious as they are intended for studio lights.

Gel'd and re-sealed, here she is.

So my thread died for a bit, as flickr deleted my account. I've re uploaded most of the pictures to bring it back to life. Lots of work has been done since I last posted, and I'm still on track to have the build done well before spring.

Went up north over the weekend and was able to get my tank primed. It was an interesting situation, as it was in a barn, -10 degrees out, and had nothing sheltering us from the elements other than some vapour barrier. So, put a BBQ in the paint booth and crossed my fingers. It actually cured really nicely. Paint to follow, hopefully this weekend.

The reason the bike looks like it took a step backwards, is because it did. The cheapy Biltwell bars weren't cutting it, and I didn't like the way the new levers looked on my bike. So, Nissin MX levers from a YZ450f are en route as well as a set of Renthal bars. Also had to turn a new front axle since I wasn't happy with that either. Big push over the next month, big reveal to come soon. Thanks for the kind words.

Tank is finished. There are a couple small dents in it, but Bondo is the enemy so left them as is.

MikeXS needs to get their shit together. They've been the least helpful supplier I've dealt with for my build. Can't answer a single fucking question I ask. I had some electrical components shipped to Maine and from there, Maritime shipped them to me. Today, I went to put the points on my bike and they are both right side points. So, a big fuck you to MikeXS. Any chance I have to not support them, I will take it.

Also they need to put the number on the boz.  They didnt and your box almost got sent back but I called and told the guys it was coming so they signed for it

It's all leather. The body is a brown almost suede like leather with embossed snake skin because I'm a little grimy like that. Looks lighter in the picture. And Green leather piping to match the tank. She also did a fork mount tool bag but I don't have pictures of that yet.
