Title: Ct70 build
Post by: Tifun on Aug 30, 2015, 22:30:57
Currently in process of restoring and modding my old ct70 my dad bought when I was a wee little lad. I don't get to see my old man much these days so I've been holding off on this build until he had a chance I swing by the new shop and unknowingly have one last look at it before I tore it down.

Yesterday afternoon was that day.

So far it's torn all the way down and the parts have been degreased and blasting has started. She'll be getting a nice little 125cc transplant to take place of the worn 70cc she had since 78'.

I'll be keeping all parts haha. I'm pretty stoked about the build. I've talked about doing it for years. Looking forward to cruising down the road at 50+ mph haha.

Only real progress I've made today was cataloging and cleaning what little mess that was made. Still trying to decide the direction this will be going.

It all awesomely fits on the shelves. I've never had a bike store so easy when in project mode haha.

This is mine so far. Contemplating on doing the Daytona special or finishing this.
I like the idea of a 110cc or even a 150cc.

My vote is build it for off road. I have several reasons if you care. #1 being because too many people are making pit bikes out of them. They belong on the trails in my opinion.

I am nothing more than a child in a man's body in most respects, therefore i'm in on this build.

Right now I'm feeling pretty good about the 140cc options. Both the piranha and lifan seems to have good reviews and power. There seems to be a lot of crap info though. Filtering through is tough.

I'm leaning more towards street. With a dual sport tire. All my stock parts will find its way to another frame which will be an off-road funboat. At least that my initial plan. Plans always change though.

Well in that case there are plenty of others out there to get ideas from. The best part will be getting pulled over every time you ride more than two blocks. :o :-X OK i'm done. Still in.

Speaking of engines. I have a Z160HO in a Z50. That engine is a PITA to kick but damn does it have a heap of go! I had a 26mm Oko Flatslide on it and it would wheelie in every gear at any speed! Topped out at 70mph with the small gearing I had on it.

So I can attest to the power of the Zongshen but can't tell you about reliability.

Also as I mentioned in your workshop thread. Check out http://mytrailbuddystore.com/ (http://mytrailbuddystore.com/) for your odds and ends.

That is paint. I backed out of doing the candy job myself and let a real painter do it. I didn't want to mess it up. Check out CHP racing. They have quite a few aftermarket parts and engines. They have the Lifan 150cc which I am considering over the total rebuild that my original engine needs. Good luck with the resto. It looks like you have a solid base to start with.

I bought engine tonight. After riding my buddies Coolster 125 with a clone ct engine I went with the Piranha 140cc and a 22mm Mikuni carb. If it's still too slow I'll get a 26mm setup. It should be here by the end of next week.

Here's Marco's(riotcontrol) silly pit bike that was way way faster than I would have ever imagined. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/03/4d53505e9d7c7ea4a1487bd37510883a.jpg)

We've all been on a minibike kick lately. Here's Andrew's(mothgils) mini deathbike that only slows when you hit the kill switch haha.

What exhaust are you running? I want to keep a high pipe on it. I'm going to try the pipe off of my buddy's pit bike above and see how it fits. It sounded really good. Similar to my DRZ400.

I still get crap from that with re supermoto haha. She actually cried when I sold it. Kinda broke my heart.

How is the quality of the engine look so far? I bought a kill switch for my DS7 from piranha and it looked like it was molded in a kindergarten class. Needless to say I was disappointed.

From what I could tell by the 2-3 minutes I messed with it today the quality seemed good. Packaged well. Parts all had multiple QC inspection labels. Didn't feel cheap just moving it around. I'll have a better review tomorrow of Thursday. Reviews online were very promising. Planetmini guys love them.

The engines are top notch. Dont even front the first time you ride it. Shit can get out of hand quick. Dont forget to rotate the engine with no fire several times before you start it, then ride it like you stole it to break it in. Use rotella T or a good break in oil. No synthetic.

Make sure the valves are properly adjusted

Awesome.

Cool man. When I was in my shed last night I noticed that the exhaust that I have on the XR70 is a piranha, way better quality than the switch was. The more I see of this build the more I'm thinking that the Daytona might get pushed back for the CT.

A buddy local who is known to build a handful of big bore CT bikes said the 140 Piranha has charging issues. I'm thinking of doing LED bulbs all around to lower amp/watt consumption. I've been on the search for a solution but haven't found anything appealing yet.

Had some time tonight to go out and test fit a few things. Mainly the engine to the frame. Fits perfect without any modifications. I did notice the new carb has only one input verses the two outputs the gas tank has. There's also no fuel shutoff like the stock carb has built in. I'll need to find an inline fuel shutoff. I also suspect I'll need to get an auxiliary tank if I want to ride more than 20 miles. Anyway. Pics!

For those curious about the build quality of the engine. It feels equally as solid if not better than the stock CT engine. Everything fits where it's suppose too. No strange burrs and grind marks. It is raw however. I do expect it to yellow a little as it ages. Thinking of hitting it with that high temp 2 part engine epoxy paint for the case and powdering the covers.

This one is getting a flat track looking tire. More geared for street/urban. I'll be getting a second frame and building another solely for the dirt. Most likely using the stock engine.

Right off the cover on the front of the engine.  Looks like a pretty common place that folks mount them. I'll crap out a bracket and be most of the way there. The piranha engine already has the banjo plate for the oil feed lines. Which is one less part I'd have to buy.  Should be a pretty simple install.

Not much progress. I've been sick, had house guests, hoodcatted a bunch and been drinking.

Today I blasted a few items and dropped a box of parts off at Mothgils house for powder. I dropped off parts and left with a gokart for the kiddo. The wife still hasn't realized its in the garage haha.

I blast the frame tomorrow and it's off to powder. Everything else that isn't getting blasted is getting replaced with new. The frame is the last bit needing blasted.

Does anyone know if anywhere sells entire hardware replacement kits for these bikes? It would be pretty nice to not have to piece a lot together.

Looking good!  I'll be doing an engine build on one of these for a buddy of mine this winter.  The bike came to him with the Chinese engine in it and a 110cc engine on the side.  Looks like a parts bike that was sloppily put back in order.  It was missing a few things but it sounds like he ordered all the stuff for it.  I don't think he will want to go as far into the paint as you are, but we are going to get everything back in working condition.  Good enough for a cow pasture anyway. :D  Keep up the good work!

I don't know of a bolt kit for the body but chp has the correct kit for the hub and rim bolts. Dumbest thing that I've seen from honda, they offer the current part number for the hub nuts but the outside diameter is too small. The nut on the clutch (outside cover) is the same part as the large hub nuts. I don't know why they didn't replace the old part number with the clutch nut. Needless to say I bought 8 clutch nuts.
Check out the Northeast vintage , they have a ton of oem ct70 stuff and they aren't trying to screw you with the prices.

Checking northeast now! I did manage to find a full kit like I wanted for about $90 on eBay. It's all polished stainless. I'd be fine with new zinc for half that cost honestly. I'm going to shoot the guy a message and ask if they'd do that.

The guys over at planet mini have had good things to say about the guy. I guess everything is bagged and tagged where it's suppose to go. It may be worth the $90 jus for that alone haha. No guess work.

Chp racing has a plated bolt kit for the ct. It covers all of the frame bolts and has the correct stampings on the bolt heads if that is what you want but......it's 90 bucks also. Lol. I'm about to start buying parts to finish mine up one micro fische at a time.

Yeah. I see theirs. I'd rather have the Allen key heads. if I was doing a factory restore (which will most likely be my next bike) is consider it.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet on bolts. I'm going to hold off on everything until I get everything back from powder. I need to assess the level of which I'm taking this rebirth. At this point there's nothing being untouched.

This CMS link lists all bolts by diameter and length http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-ct70-trail-70-1977-usa_model7454/partslist/ it will take a little time to write them all down but then you can order stainless Allen head bolts from bolt depot.com.  They will come bagged by size.  They are fairly reasonable and ship quickly.  I replaced every bolt on my cb100/125 build and I think it was about $60 total

The ol YX140. I have only ever heard good things about them, I think most guys run a 26mm on them.

Nice choice, My mates pit bike has one and it has plenty of grunt.

Brodie, did your buddy go from a 22mm to a 26mm by chance? I'm trying to justify the upgrade before I bolt it all together.

wait...do you even have TIRES OR RIMS yet?

Its gonna look like R2D2 is capable of "Transformer-ing" into a Honda 70.

Seriously though, w a blue stripe...to break up all the black.  I bet its really gonna look sharp.

No wheels or tires yet. I just realized i forgot to order wheel bearings and new stem bearings.

I've mainly just sat down in the shop today and stared at it. Everything is about to come together real fast. Just painted the shocks black to hold me over until I decide on what I want to do there. I'm in process of cleaning 37 years of dirt and debris off the wire harness.

I ended up pulling the engine back off last night. I've got to clean up some ground points and my hands were to big to fit in the hole to install the coil. (That's what she said) I did manage to run the wire loom, installed the helmet lock and bolted the triple tree on. All in all a slow progressive night.

Progress has been very slow. Mostly due to the shop space being absorbed by a 75 GL1000. Damn thing is too big and needs to go.

The only real update is that I now have a completely new harness. Everything from the key to the coil and brake light switch is getting replaced with new. Hopefully this week I can pull the old harness again and loom the new in. I only need minor details at this point to get the bike running. Yeah, I need an exhaust a little more performance oriented. I don't want deafening, loud enough for people to hear/see me and flowing enough to not completely rob it of power. I'm having trouble picking a system out. It need to be able to clear the rear pegs so my daughter can ride on it with me and not get a burnt leg. Anyone have any suggestions? Trying to stay under $250 if possible.

This may fit the performance bill but not sure about the clearance for short passenger legs.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Carbon-Fiber-Muffler-Exhaust-Honda-CT70-Trail-70-Dax-/262048241535

Everything metal can be modified, at least it gives you a good length of big diameter pipe to work with and the carbon fiber can should match pretty nicely.

Threw the old seat on just to make it look more "finished" haha.

Put the new clutch perch/lever on. Didn't like the polished bit so I threw some powder on it. Much better imo.

I think I found a good match for the white powder. I had most of the bike coated by a local guy. Now that I'm comfortable with laying powder I figured I'd do the rest of the bits I had laying about.  Here's what p365 looks like without the clear. I'd say I found a winner on this test piece.

Thanks. I'm beyond pleased with this build. Only thing I need to get it running is exhaust. There's a ton of options and I'm having trouble deciding. I'm looking at a $200+ purchase at this point.

Looks like for the short term I'm going to use the stock super restrictive exhaust. Funds have dwindled away faster than expected. There's really only a few more items needed for me to be content. Factory decals, exhaust, and a new seat.

I'll need to make an extension to get the exhaust mounted since the new engines head sits further away. Super sad I can't find a good flowing stock looking pipe. I might just have to make my own. I'm not a fan of the cans or the low hangers. The more I look the more I want a stock looking pipe so who knows. Maybe I'll cobble a stock looking setup together using aftermarket parts. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160118/1d749fb2a244630908bc2893b85631ba.jpg)(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160118/4477b493ed1f9476858bd0b56f4b572d.jpg)

Going to powder the red bits on the oil cooler as well. Laid a test sample down today to see how it will look. Pretty pleased with it and should keep it on the storm trooper theme.

You may be able to heat the header and twist so the bracket lines up. It doesn't look like you would need much.

I'm not sure honestly. The st90 is probably a bit too restrictive. I'll investigate the 110.

I went out as soon as I read your message this morning. There's no way to bend it. It's flat and welded to the back. Really, a 2" bracket with a couple of holes will be easy to make.

I meant at the header pipe. After it makes the U shape. Hard to explain but twist it right where it makes that 90 degree towards the back of the bike. That should cause you to gain overall length on the pipe.

Here's a quick crappy tack splattered weld of the brackets. They will need some cleaning up on them before I lay powder.

I also decided I didn't like the color of the wheel hoops so I threw some clear powder on them. Still not sure. I have a spare set of hoops I'm going to lay satin black then clear over to determine what I like best. I suspect the black will win.

Left is cleared right is not

I had issues with the powder rejecting due to a poor ground (my fault) today after I fought to get the tires off. Due to being frustrated about prepping twice I called it a night. I'll do the black set next before I waste any more time on these.

Tifun you're still making good progress. I also need a new seat and just don't feel like spending the money on it but it probably would get the ball rolling again.
I like the black and white too. Honda should have offered this opposite of the late 70's black one.

My seat pan has a crack in the center. It's a total bummer. I'd like to use the original tin. That is, until I realized a quality repop was just over $100 lol. I actually switch from black to white for that very reason. I thought and inverted version would look really cool.

Well. I have an official acceptance letter from the guys over at the Garagebrewed show that my bike was selected to be on display. Pretty excited about that.

It's a pretty good show. There's a lot of cool builds every year.

Latest update includes a new correct year seat. I love this exhaust in terms of shape. Not a fan of the sound though. Really torn on what to do. I have a Brock's system for it but I love the look of the oem so much that I'm having a hard time wanting to swap it.

As long as the volume level of the stock exhaust is tolerable.  I vote its a GO.  It really is a nice looking unit.

It's not very loud. Sounds like a stock CT70. Which isn't exactly a great sound. Aftermarket setups sound amazing in comparison.

I say keep her on til after the show.  Then decide.  Rach and I booked our room at Symphony Hotel.  Just a couple blocks from the brewery.  And the trolley will take us to and fro.

Awesome. We are in Covington at the Raddison. So we get to have fun finding parking spaces. I'll be there super early Saturday to drop the bike off. Not sure what our day consists of or when the rest of the indykids will get in town.

I had a kV 75.... along the same lines. It's actually embarrassing to say but I got rid of it because I couldn't get it to run right. Embarrassing as I'm a mechanic of 25 years now, what could have been wrong with a single cylinder mini bike that couldn't be figured out. I just didn't know at 11 and neither did dad.  Ran awesome for many years before that though.

Ah yes. KV75. Buddy had on last year for a short stink. Cool little 2t bike. His wasn't as fast as a stock CT but was a blast to ride.
