Title: Check us out on TV! We Will Be On Wrench Against the Machine!
Post by: J.Webster Designs on Sep 27, 2016, 12:43:04
So... after attending the Handbuilt Show with our latest build, I was contacted by the production crew of Esquire Network and asked if I would be interested in being on a bike build off show. I didn't think it was legitimate at the time, but it was!

The series premier airs on NOVEMBER 15th on the Esquire Network. Make sure you watch the show to see me go through the most grueling 72 hrs of my life.

Editing will make or break this show I believe. If it is 15 min clips re-hashed for the full hour it's gonna suck, It has potential to be great so I hope it is.

It definitely does have the potential. Knowing the reality of what they captured on camera, it will definitely be disappointing if they mess it up in editing.

JSJamboree,

The series premier was on the 15th. I enjoyed it. My episode is on 12/6 I am anxious to watch it and see how it accurately portrays the real life experience.  I believe they did a good job at showing the struggles, but the first episode the teams were given brand new Indian Scouts and did not have some of the struggles that we had to experience.

seeing that first episode the show sucks hard, its pathetic and roland sands appears to have the persona of a 3x lobotomized pinhead
but i wish you well and hope above all you had a good time
but these shows are all the same,so  lame, i cannot get over the stupidity it takes to put shit like that on tv, literally, painfull to watch
i just hope you smoke em with greatness

Xb33bsa Being out there was a ton of fun. It was an experience that I wouldn't trade anything for. The bike that we built came out extremely well for the time that we had and the transformation is 10x what you've seen on the show to date. I'm definitely interested to see what our episode turns out like. If the dont cut the good stuff... it should be a FAR superior episode.

I watched it last night. Definitely disappointing. There is no way the two builders thought that cleaning up a Harley was cool. They didn't do anything worthwhile to those new bikes. Damn I wanted it to be cool.

XB33BSA- Keep in mind... It's TV. There are certain things that happened in reality that may appear to be different in the final edit. Also, 3 days to do everything that happens is an incredibly short period of time. Especially when you have a producer pulling you aside every 5 minutes to ask you what you are doing. In reality, I would say we had more like 65 hours of build time of the 72hrs after all of the interviewing time and interruption. I'll be happy to answer questions on my particular episode as I know the truth in that instance.  But I do know after talking with those in the episodes you reference, they had every intention of doing the things you are talking about. But when you have 72hrs to drive around an unfamiliar town, through LA traffic to hopefully find the parts you need. You definitely make sacrifices when you find something "close enough" and then you scramble to make it work. I know in our episode, there were a few items that were on the list that the judges are going to tear us apart for not doing as "safety hazards". We had every intention of doing them. There simply wasn't enough time.

my point is they haven't had a single person or builder on that set for any show that knows shit about motorcycles
there all just idiots hacking shit up

I've now just watched the first 2 episodes and I really don't see what the draw to the show is. Its just a bunch of short edits of different people doing different things with little fabrication being shown. Then they go out for the rides which seems more for the enjoyment of camera angles and showing off.

XB, Jay Lossa knows bikes as he has built a few really nice bikes. I'm sure they are confined by the show structure.

Firebane - I think the draw to the show is more to do with the struggle of trying to complete a nearly impossible task. I am still in shock that we were able to complete what we did in 72hrs with what we were given...

Clem - Definitely confined by the show structure. All the tools in the shop were absolute junk. The band saw that was provided was a wood bandsaw and never got used because it was simply dangerous to do so. The tooling on the lathe was all burnt out and chipped. The tooling for the mill was either broken, the wrong size or was missing parts to make it work. So in essence it was a giant drill press... There are tons of reasons why it appears that we are fumbling around. Because we were.  We walked into that shop completely blind. We were told that it was a fully equipped shop, and that we had to build a bike in 3 days for 3 grand out of a bike that was a running/riding bike. In reality, we walked into a shop with wrong type of equipment, broken equipment, missing pieces to the equipment, and give bikes that barely ran and had mechanical issues. We made it work anyway that we could.

That maybe true but the show doesn't show anything that makes it difficult to complete a impossible task. The first two episodes the only issues people ran into were generally problems of their own nature.

I am sure that doing it in person is a lot different obviously based off of your comments but it really is not translating well to the end user.

Firebane - I don't disagree with you. I share the same thoughts on the desire for more when it comes to the final editing of the show. Alas,  it is up to the network to final edit it. I wish I could get my hands on raw footage... Fingers crossed my episode was edited well.

Lostinmiself - Similar premise.  Much smaller budget, much smaller time window and no ability to "pre-build" like they had on the biker build off. Kind of like "biker build-off meets Chopped on the food network" haha

I think a lot of the issues is that you are really hyping this up with good cause obviously but what your hyped about and what we see is COMPLETELY different. If I was to go based off this show about these guys and their abilities I'd say they were mediocre backyard mechanics who can do bolt-ons. Do some research into these groups and you'll learn its more than that.

We get why your excited but again it just does not translate to the end user.

Firebane - I am not disagreeing with your thoughts, nor am I hyping the show in anyway. Just stating that we will be on it. I agree that the first couple of episodes have left me wanting more just as you have stated. Unfortunately, I am not associated with the network and have no control over any of the things that we all agree are lack luster about the show. Hopefully they did better on my episode. I will be happy to answer questions that you all may have about my episode.

Guys, this isn't serious TV.  You know that don't you?  It's "Reality TV" which be definition has little or no relation to actual reality.  It's about drama and sparks and presenting a cool look at the end.  Sands is the real deal though and has built some cool and functional bikes and his old race bikes were works of art.

For teams "competing" it's just marketing and a chance to get on TV to hawk their shops.  That has a value to any shop and as long as they don't come off as complete losers, they get some good publicity.  That's consistent with teh whole reality TV concept.  It's about hype and appearance and has little to do with substance.

Whether or not any of the shops including JWebster can actually build a decent functional bike is not what the show is about and cannot be determined by watching the show.  It's about guys trying to look cool modifying bikes to look cool. It's entertainment...

It's about guys trying to look cool modifying bikes to look cool. It's entertainment...

Or houses.  Or cars.  Or antiques.  Or food.  Or anything.  There's a few reasons I don't have cable and that's because I don't like reality tv, I don't like sports, I don't watch the news, and I don't like tv series.  There's a formula for each of those things and the differences between the shows are few and far between.  Every reality show has the angry boss, the stupid guy, the wacky guy, and the guy who knows everything.  Throw in a hot chick and you're set.  I would venture some of them are complete BS- they have a week to restore a rusted out car and it comes out with straight body panels and fresh paint.  That's impossible to do in a week.  How is it that every week the American Pickers find some rare 100 year old motorcycle?  Just randomly driving down the road and stopping at a house... sure...

I wish these shows were better, because I would watch them.  But I can't stand the guys in bandannas, the shirts with flames on them, overemphasis on product placement, and generic music.  If the networks put out stuff on par with old episodes of The New Yankee Workshop and This Old House (without that douche Bob Vila that never did anything but talk) I'd be game.  Real people doing real shit.

No offense to your episode or your decision to work with the show.  Just venting about the state of entertainment.  I'm irritated that they put you in a position with broken tools and the constant interruptions that ate into the already-too-short amount of time.  I'm sure no one expected to get duped.  I would have liked to see what you could have accomplished with the proper amount of time and materials.

its not sands agreed the guy has credibility up the wazoo, but with his creativity you would think the show would be more of a standout
and if they are supplying machine tools, power tools etc rendered useless cause of no usable  tooling thats horseshit, its not fair to the competitors

Couldn't watch the full episode but the clips played, it looked like a good episode. Need to find a way to get the full video in Canada, none of the providers listed on the Esquire site are Canadian.  There is likely one of our providers re-broadcasting so I will track it down.

Pity they didn't show that. Would be nice to see ppl getting dirty inside the motors. The way its edited the viewer is left thinking the motors are already solid on most of the bikes.

jag767 - it is.  I think that is due to the fact that they told us they would be solid running and they ended up not being solid running.... They also did not show that they gave the Rodsmith team a whole new rack of carbs for their bike either. They couldn't get the original set to stop leaking and run correctly, so the production company bought them a whole new set of mikunis.

Maritime - Hope you are able to find it man! Thanks for the support!

yeah webster you guys and the other team aslso were what made the show a lot better this time.
they need to rethink the main aspect of the show though, its about skilled builders pulling off amazing stuff in 3 days ?ok
but for them 2 supply 2 machines that need tunning work is horseshit.i th\ink all agree to build a custom bike you need to start with a very good running engine/gearbox/clutch and electrical system
because they want to testride the goddam thing and there gonna take away a win why ? because the bike ran like shit already ?srsly did they think the show thru that far ?apparently painfully not.i tell you now mang if i was going to put up a show like that that uses used vehicles i would have them all tested for ridability issues, fix them first or not use that bike to not do so ? how the hell could they be that stupid yes rolin sans and munkee lips garage are stupid f^*&kers, morons
well i think lawsuits are apropriate
the show has got to be either a buildoff or a tuning mechanics challenge
having it be both is too bluury you loose the focus

XB33BSA - Thanks!  I completely agree on the mechanics on the bikes.  Should be completely running bikes so that there is more time for the builders to focus on fabrication.

Tune-a-fish - Bewbs!

Finally caught the show.  I think you guys killed it.   Is the format of the show perfect ?  Of course not.  Is it entertaining and fun to watch - I think so.  I'll watch almost any type of builder show.  Heck, I even watched the dingdongs at OCC when it was on.  It's a shame that they didn't really have a good set-up for the shop.  That, believe it or not, could have should have been easily accomplished, especially in LA.  They can easily change things for next season if it gets picked up again - most tools could be donated by the manufacturers.  They do it all the time.  I really like the idea of having 2 comparable bikes.  Wouldn't take much for the production crew to hire someone to actually go through the bikes before they were handed off to the contestants.  That should have been done.  Gotta be apples to apples.

People just don't appreciate how short a time span of 72 hours really is.  Now, factor in an unfamiliar shop (with crap tools) in an unfamiliar town.  That is a helluva challenge.
I comment you guys for what you were able to accomplish.  The other team got some breaks and still messed their's up.  It goes to show that you need people with different skill sets for things to go good.  Even if the competitor's bike ran, I still gave you guys the nod.   It was the only thing you could call a chopper.  Pretty darn cool looking to boot.

You must have some dirt on Garage Co...  they took it pretty easy on you for parts ;).   But....they get a free commercial.  Everybody wins.

Again, well done guys!  You did yourselves proud.  Definitely DID NOT look like a 72 hour build.
