Title: GL500 Silverwing Scooped for $125
Post by: KoŽstum on Oct 23, 2016, 12:25:20

New project :D

So yesterday a non-running 1982 Silverwing popped on Craigslist 20 miles away with the title in his name and tags expired last year.

His asking price was $100 so of course I texted. He said he already had someone that would be there the next day to get it >:( argh!!!

I knew I'd risk pissing him off and I only had one chance to change his mind... this is our short exchange:

And a pic of my son with our new $125 Silverwing just before we loaded it on the trailer to bring it home.

Good deal. The CXs can be cool bikes when done right. I know there is a "triple bypass" procedure that typically needs to be done with these motors, which involves pulling the motor and addressing a few items that are known to fail - cam chain tensioner, stator and mechanical camshaft seal. There are a few guys on here who work on these bikes a lot who will be able to tell you more about it and whether or not you'll want/need to do it. Here's a page I found on the procedure and whats involved.

Thinking cafe but gonna check advCo's link and see what's involved just to get it healthy again.

(http://)I already miss my cx500...I still have a spare motor I'm planning on rebuilding. Depending on the mileage and the care taken on it it may not need a triple yet. Mine was an 82 with 13000, didn't have to do a thing to the motor. The 81 though.....needs the triple. Motofactions got good info, also their is a cx500 forum you should dig into I'm guessing there's a few guys from here over their also. I liked working on the cx, I thought it was pretty easy, so easy I  fact I got a gl1000 to replace it...cafe type project. Good luck, look forward to seing your build.

do a cam chain inspection
go to the cx forum and search or ask for   dental mirror inspection

it comes from here

http://cx500forum.com/forum/general-discussion/10-quick-reference.html

where you can get a manual

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B6EDVo72Y5BfMDEwYmExZWEtMzZiZS00YjdlLWFiODEtZDQwNmVlNDM5YzE2?hl=en

Dental Mirror Cam Chain Inspection.

http://globalcxglvtwins.forumlaunch.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=528

then you need to do the carbs and look through the rest of the quick reference

That is quite a find for that price, well done. Quite the box on the rear too, good for beer runs.

Thanks everyone and nice looking bike cbrianroll.

And thanks for the links and advice cxman and advCo, looks like I have some research to do.

A little progress today just checking wiring, turn signals, horns, brake lights and all that works.

do the  "main fuse upgrade " before you go to far less than 10 bucks and it will save you a world of grief

also make sure you pull the plugs and put a it of oil in each cylinmder

before you start spinning the motor over

the cam runs on the bare aluminum block the surfaces are dry from it sitting so crank the motor in 20 second cycles with 2 minutes

in between till the oil light goes out then do 4-5 more 20 second cycles to make sure oil is pumped everwhere

then you can put the plugs back

Thanks cxman.

So trailored it to work yesterday so I could mess with it at lunchtime, added a battery today that I already had using the toolkit from the beer/cat trunk:

Good negotiating skills. Cant beat a motorcycle for $125. Previous owner could've junked it for more. I'm honestly not a fan of CX's ONLY because it's shaft driven. There's something about a chain drive that looks so appealing. Will be watching this thread.

Was going to adjust chain at lunch today but it was raining, will post an update on that soon.

Since it was raining at lunch I put the crash bars in the sand blaster.

Before:

After a few minutes:

I did take a look at the beer/cat box, anyone know how to take it off without a hammer or sawsall? I got the bolts in front but these in the rear at the helmet locks are getting me. Got the outside nuts loose but they're trapped by the helmet locks, the inside nuts won't turn but I did spray them with penetrating fluid to try later, and the whole rear box unit completely surrounds the rear frame rails for several inches and there are no bolts up under the fender to get at. These two nuts (on each side) are all there is to wrench on and I don't really wanna break the helmet lock so I didn't try to force it around:

The GL500 my first shaft-drive bike so we'll see how it goes.

I looked into it and the first shaft-propelled motorcycle was manufactured in 1902:

lol  stop what you are doing

to release the top box simply unlock both helmet locks them psh the lock bars upward till the lock box pops and you can then lift it off

you dont need any tools or to unbolt anything

if you go here you can download the gl500 owners manual it has all the info you need the lock box and seat quick change and the lock box has a high an low top

Popped off just like you said cxman, that's pretty cool and easy as pie. It even still has the original tool kit there in the back.

I don't think the tools have seen light in 40 years, they look almost new. Two tool kits with one bike, sweet:

Now the rear removed after I got the box off:

Ran out of time and didn't get to the chain tensioner today, next time.

Exactly what I was thinking, I wasn't expecting it to be so flat. Looks good.

Adjusted timing chain at lunch today. I was afraid to loosen the bolt too much... I went about 4 turns out. Maybe I didn't go far enough or maybe the tensioner was just stuck from not being adjusted? I let it run for a bit to warm up, I'll adjust again and see if maybe running for a loosened something up... or maybe it's better and that's valvetrain noise?

2 turns is enough

you did it with the left cylinder at tdc firing?

you can put a block of wood up against the side of the motor over the case split and whack it with a hammer a few times to jar the adjuster

then tighten it

if its still noisy you need to do a triple bypass you have either a really stretched chain or broken guide

A little lunchtime progress today, a paycheck can do wonders for morale even if ya haven't ordered anything yet :)

My HF sawsall cut through the frame like butter. Also removed the guages, mufflers, and lower bag mounts at the rear footpegs.

About to order the cam chain, guides, seals and more. I found a price of $55 for the timing chain but open to recommendations on where to order. I saw a list somewhere but can't find it now.

Great, thanks guys, DSS is where I found the parts so I was on track.

Ordered the chain, guides, and a few other bits. I'll order gaskets, seals, and other items later when engine is closer to re-assembly.

I want to lower the front without having the fork tubes sticking through the triple tree (it already is) so I'm thinking of doing an inverted front fork swap and see some people using the GSXR750 fronts, any suggestions on other inverted setup swaps? I have access to a lathe, mill, etc... at work so adapting it wouldn't be an issue.

Go to All Balls and enter the specs of the bike on the Fork swap thing on the top left. Then it will tell you what forks will swap in with what bearings. But just because the forks swap doesn't mean it will be better shorter forks screw with the geometry. I have a set of 1986 GSXR1100 forks on my bike and it does make the bike feel different for sure. Plus I am running a 17 inch front wheel so my advice may not be credible.

A little more lunchtime progress. Airbox removed, electronics removed now and frame cut a little more. Got an email saying my new cam chain and a couple other items are in transit.

Thinking of future seat hoop options while making everything easier to get access.

(the frame is straight, it just looks odd due to the camera angle)

Bought an extra engine locally for only $50 off CL. Supposedly this one only has 16k miles while mine has 62k miles. We'll see what shape both engines are inside but for $50 I couldn't pass it up... insurance.

It was running before the teardown so I'm just going to clean them the best I can and skip a rebuild on the carbs if possible. If they need rebuilt later they're easy to remove and I'll do it then.

Those will probably clean up better than you think. it looks like mostly surface rust.

As long as the area of fork tube that travels through the fork seals isn't rusty, you will be ok.
some wd-40 and fine steel wool  should clean that up nice

Havent worked on them yet, as I have so many on the go right now! i love the shaft drive... no need to worry about a new chain!. But chains to have a special place in my heart.. Here are a couple bikes Ive built. One is a shaft Xv750 and the other Cb550!

Sooooo... no pic but it's damn near bare frame. I want the swingarm off and I'm looking at the manual but not getting it. Do I just remove the spanner nut and then it comes apart or do I need to do something after/before the spanner nut? I see hex heads inside the nut but the doc's I'm looking at aren't clear on what to do.

I pulled the plastic plugs off both sides of the stamped frame, the air shock is off, the swing-arm is ready to drop if I can get the pivot out.

TIA

Slowly cleaning nuts, bolts washers and more one by one BUT anyone have a lead on a new u-joint for the driveshaft?

Can't find a new u-joint anywhere. Swingarm bearings would be great too, I've seen them listed but not in stock anywhere. TIA.

All Balls for the fork conversion are in the mail :D

Neither sportland in urbana nor csmnl.com have them.  Both surprise me.   :o

surely they are not worn out.  Clean and repack them.

Or take them to your local Motion Industries.  They should find them.

Just dont screw them up.

the u joint is not replaceable it is staked  and never was a service item you replace the drive shaft

if you are needing one pm me i will dig you one up

swing arm bearings are to be had   right from any bearing supply

30202 and the ID measures 17mm  you must use both cup and cone

size 30203 is 17x40x12

Thanks for that cxman, I'll check get bearings.

Driveshaft rotates freely so I'll just clean it up and use it for now.

I got the rough engine cleaning done yesterday before I get crack it open.

Got the tach gear out at lunchtime for future seal replacement. Had trouble pulling it straight out but sticking the screwdriver through the visegrip jaws and prying against the wood block worked like a charm with a couple light taps.

FINALLY!!! After making tools and eventually buying the $40 repro that didn't work... but using the hex adapter I was able to get the whole spindle/castle nut assembly out without too much trouble and the swingarm is off so I can finally move forward some more. Now to either get the corroded nut off the f'n spindle. What a pain and delay this little step has been. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170626/0122a13957acb69557e06bc547e362b6.jpg)

Thats interesting.  You have done this?

I was gonna say fill the cup w dry ice.  (some blood donation banks sell it for like $5 a lb)  Then flip it over and hit the cup w torch flame.
It been a couple years since I last bought dry ice but Im thinking that was the going rate.
Just get good gloves.  Dry ice is dangerously cold.  Ask me how I know.  ::)

Working on the bike again after a long pause 😁

Welding therace didn't work for me... but it did give me a place to  get some grip and work it out after 10 minutes of carefully prying back and forth.

I ordered the Incognito steering stem to mate the GSXR forks to the Silverwing frame 👍

And started sandblasting the frame at lunch today.

I'll be working the Porsche Rennsport Renion next week so no progress will be made on the bike 😬

Found a clean CBR600 rear coilover w/ remote resivoir to replace the factory Sliverwing air shock... only $50 shipped.

The coilover is less than a centimeter longer that the air shock w/ same diameter mounting bolts.

Also making plugs to reinforce new seat joints.

Latest progress includes sandblasting the swingarm, painting it, and installing the bearing race.

Then even more sandblasting of the frame. I probably  have at least 5 hours of blasting this stinkin' frame. Yesterday's lunchtime consisted of  prepping the frame, then today was a great day between rainstorms to lay some primer on it.

Next is some basic assembly to begin seat tube fabrication.

Hopefully next week I can do some loose assembly of the GSXR front end
