Title: BGW Tri-Rod Panty Dropper Hellride
Post by: irk miller on Jul 09, 2018, 16:03:38
Okay, so I totally dropped the ball on a Mid-Ohio go kart for this year.  I thought everyone had forgotten, but then I got called out this weekend.  To make up for my lame ass lack of concentration, I present this trike for Mid-Ohio 2019 antics.  It's a BGW Tri-Rod from the seventies.  The bike has definitely spent some time outdoors.  The axles are rusty, as is the frame.  The CVT is trashed and the fiberglass needs some repair.  It's still a solid, unmolested frame, with glass that is not overly difficult to fix.  Needless to say, in a drunken stupor, I was easily talked into buying this contraption.  That's what friends do.  #enablers.  2019 is sure to be interesting...

Haha.  I came really close to picking up a Rockwell 440 snowmobile motor to put in there while I was still in Ohio.  I have this thing where I want it to be able to go 60mph.  Right now, I have a Honda GC160 to install in there but something better has to happen.

i got plenty of cx500 motors

make a sprocket that sits on the out put shaft

thats 50 hp at 140 lbs running

and easy to wire to run if you use a cdi motor

just one wire plus the reg rectifier and put the battery up front where you will need the ballast

should hit 100 easy and its a 5 speed

shifter cart anyone?

oh yeah it might need wheelie bars

One thing I won't get away with using the GY6 rear end setup is not lengthening the chassis by about 6 inches.  I cut the tail piece off to mock up.  This is pretty close to how it will fit in there.  It reminds me of a dune buggy.  The swing arm mount is pretty high, but until I can make some proper chassis points, i don't really have a way to get the motor and swing arm oriented.

More frame work and the de-rusting begins.  Tires came in, but the rims are MIA.  A mockup gives an idea how it looks.  In a way, I wish I didn't have to stretch the frame.  In a way, I'm glad I had to stretch the frame.

I took the front end apart to rebuild, when I discovered the right fork had been wrecked, broken and booger welded back together.  I tossed around the best way to fix it, when I decided to just redo that side.

All at once, I cut the tube off and tacked a new piece in place.

note:  I should probably care that the right side tube is a few mm OD than the left side. I don't. Once the shocks are mounted it really shouldn't be that noticeable.

Mostly just repair of the missing chunks and cracks.  Then repaint.  Im'a have to find the perfect vinyl for the seat cover.  That shit has to sparkle.

That gy6 rear end setup is a going to be a good fit. I have one of the buggies it comes off of. The buggy was good for 35mph all day long, and 40 if you took it down the road.

As long as nothing is broken inside the motor, yes.  The one I took out is 50cc, so internally it's different.  I'll likely just get sent a new motor, though.  The vendor will make a claim to UPS and also get replacement parts from the manufacturer.  The case has a chunk taken out on the fan side, which doesn't look like it will effect performance, but it will require the side of the case to be swapped to fix.

What size did you go with, the 150?
Maybe to late for this, but try to make sure you have easy access to the starter motor when the motor is installed. Frequent problems with the starter either not engaging or disengaging.

It is the 150.  Very good access to the starter motor.  It's on top and not blocked by anything.

Made a headlight bracket and got a headlight mounted.  I don't have a tubing bender, so I had to do it the 'ol torch method.  I also flipped the shocks.  The bracket on the swing arm was interfering with the shock body, so I got a better fit upside down.  I don't think for this ride it will matter, especially with RFY shocks.

One important thing I have to address on this scoot is the solid axle rear end.  There is no differential, so making a turn will cause it to plow straight ahead.  In a buggy, where this rear end came from, there is 4 wheel suspension and the rider weight is virtually over the front wheels.  They rely on a lack of grip on the rear inboard wheel to compensate for the lack of differential, plus weight pushing into the front end.  With this trike, the rider weight is pretty much center and even back towards the rear wheels.  Where a shifter kart relies on frame flex and the inboard wheel lifting to make the turn, this frame has no flex.  I really don't want to fork out for a differential.  Having power to both rear wheels would be good, but I don't think it's totally necessary on this trike.  Maybe it gets upgraded later after I spend some time on it.  Maybe I get another splined hub and make it a drag racer, since it would only go straight ahead.  Until then, so begins the task of fixing the plow.

First I decided to pull the rear left wheel, since the brake is all the way right and the sprocket is right of center.  I bored the splines out of the hub and for now machined a sleeve to go over axle splines.  By Monday, I'll be delivered 32mm of needle bearing to run inside the hub to replace the sleeve.

Actually, just one rear brake, atm. Not sure about adding one to the front or not.  We'll see how well it stops, I suppose.  LOL

Repairs on the body have begun.  I'm using a non-blushing epoxy resin with System 3 fused silica to thicken it up.  Instead of mounting the body on the four connection points as stock, I've formed a metal base out of 1/8" steel plate.  The body will mount to this base with 6 - 8 screws and rubber sandwiched in-between...

Paint came in, so when the monsoon season retreats for a weekend, weíll get crazy up in this joint.  Iím also waiting on the month long adventure of my motor top end to get here from China. In the meantime, hereís a little added detail: a Raptor control. Since this thing is cvt, thereís no need for a clutch and much need for a parking brake. So, Iíll run the rear brake and parking brake through this control on the left side. If I add a front brake, itíll go right side.

Thanks, dudes. I got my paint in, so I was planning to paint next weekend.  I ordered the wrong amount of flake carrier, though. Dumb. Weíll see if the right amount gets here in time.

Welcome to a stupid game of Chinese olympics. The new motor had the wrong drive shaft, so I had to pull the drive shaft from the old motor and swap out the one in the new motor. Left- wrong shaft. Right- correct shaft.

A buddy that now rides a Spider said that the hardest thing to get used to was not having the front brake lever. Hope you are spraying this weekend!

the old rokon dirtbikes with the cvt came from the factory with a brake lock.. iirc that option was added in the second year of production hahaha mustve had a few turn the fuel screw in a bit to far, fire it up and ghost ride it through a wall lol

Hahaha.  That go kart my buddy brought me to sell was like that too.  First time I fired it up, had I not had the wheels chocked, it would've taken off.

I had a go kart when I was growing up a bit like that, with a sticky centrifugal clutch. I got pretty good at jacking up the rear wheels on 2x4's to start it, then gingerly getting in and then rocking it off once I was ready to go lol the tires were slick enough to slip in the grass if I gunned it once as I rocked it off.

Spraying with a TCP Global HVLP gun and a 2.5mm tip.

I'll be laying the flake in a flake carrier.  It's an intercoat that's similar to a clear coat, but is formulated to help suspend and orient the flake.

I have seen guys use it in videos. Can't wait to see how it turns out.  I may get the nerve to try it someday. My spray gun has a 1.8 tip I can switch to so I won't be going that big on the flake.
