Smallest of the Hondas: CODENAME MB5
« on: Mar 29, 2011, 12:27:50 »
ok so i'm going to start a rebuild thread of my little guy: 82' MB5. Only brought to the US for a year and is the fastest 49cc bike I've ever laid eyes on. So naturally I had to have it, I tore it all apart last night and found a horrible scent when I opened the air box, apparently a mouse had been living in there. Heres some pictures of the tear down, and i'll continue the thread from there.

I'll upload more when I get home and progress.

Also figure out how to hotlink images so they just appear instead of having to go to imgur.

Plan on doing a full restore, and I'm going to need some help from you guys on how to paint the engine (what should I use) and how to rebuild an engine. I took the head off yesterday and the piston had sludge on top, which I assume is bad. The only part I need to "complete" the bike is a side cover that goes over the battery. I was bidding on ebay for one and it went from $12 to $67 in 30 seconds, and I can't afford to pay that kind of cash. The engine is "oil injected" and I think that attributes to its 50+ mph top speed.

I have three of the MB5s, great bikes working on my 4th now. 1st off you cannot bore out the cylinder, I tried. 2nd find a 1985 or 86 air cooled CR80 engine, they have a six speed cluster which fits ino the MB5 case.

Not really into spending loads on any enhancements, I just want to bring it back to life, once I get bored with that I'll go for the 6 speed case, maybe file down the reeds, get a bigger carb and such. I tore open the engine today and it doesn't look like anything is very wrong, just gotta clean some carbon off the piston and it should be good to sew up. Once I get the time this weekend I'm going to replace all the engine bolts with metric hex bolts and do some painting. hopefully it will be ready to ride next weekend. Thanks for the suggestion though and I'm sure I'll be messaging you if I need any help.

If you get a chance look into the Honda NS50, again only 1 year in the USA, six speed water jacket 2 stroke. Ugly horrible factory color scheme but what a nice ride.
