Trying my hand at a documentary. The trip was one to scratch off the bucket list. Highlight was definitely getting to briefly meet Hoofhearted. Going back next year with a more serious attitude towards getting to race. Bringing back the cafe bike race ready and three of us are looking for a second bike to race. Here's a trailer from the documentary. Curious to know what you think. My skins pretty thick so don't hesitate to say it like it is.

Thanks FNG. I've posted this vid over on the build thread. May as well post it again if no one objects. Keep them all in one place over here I guess. I can't stress enough how amazing this place is. Anyone with a bike should go here at least once before they kick the bucket. I hope these videos incline some of you to get there.

Very nice!  I'd love to see a longer length with some explanation and character development.  Good filming and editing though.  The song wasn't really my taste, but it worked great with the film to make that montage type feel.

Hey thanks Chito. Its a work in progress. I'm going through scripting and narration trying to dig out a story line. If nothing else we'll just have a good flick to watch years from now to recant our first (not our last) trip to Bonneville.

Thanks. Working on another short clip. This time with narration. Anyone have any experience with sync licenses? Global Image Works has some material I'd like to use. Curious to know what kind of costs I'm looking at for a couple of short vintage clips they have.

Great little film and the music fits the images. Perfect. It all works.
Leave off the salt flats shot at the very end. Makes no sense. Make that a separate film.


That second film clip the words in the music don't work for me because it is shot out on the salt flats and the music is talking about "out on the road"
That statement about something lost in the translation makes no sense either. I do not understand what not getting permission has to do with riding the bike.
Maybe not getting permission to film-not getting permission to ride? Separate issues?


I would put all the film clips of the salt flats together including that front view shot of the guy riding with that hat with the flaps waving around on the back of the cap into one movie and change the music.


What about all the salt flats images with a narration by YOU just talking about how you felt that day? Don't buy narration. Make it yourself. We are interested in what you have to say.


Oh, BTW...That first film does not need a story line. It is like a melody of a song. It is just about a feeling. That is good enough. That whole clip could be in a film as a part where someone in a story takes a ride and that is how they feel. See what I mean?


Also remember what they say about making a film.
You need 5 times more material than the length of the film to start.
You will edit out a lot of it. Just keep making more film clips. Then make a story.

This is really great input Donald. I suspect you have some background in the film industry? I'm still playing with the footage, watching other shorts and getting a feel for what works and what doesn't. All told I have about 64 gigs worth of 720 (is that still considered HD?), so I have a ton of work cut out for me. I had planned on having something ready for release this month but I'm no where near finished. One particular documentary I was thinking of emulating style wise (totally different message) is here.

I like the idea of there not being a story line. Just a melody. I might like to explore that idea further. I want to keep the whole thing down to 20 to 30 minutes (maybe less). It needs to be entertaining as well as engaging. Nothing worse than sitting through someones travel videos if its just plain footage.

I will be narrating the doc. I thought I would just play with the journal from the trip. I agree on doing it myself. I'm still stuck on the price of licensing agreements. I was quoted 40 per second for some old Bonneville footage. They had a 30 second minimum. I'm not looking at this as a commercial venture so investing that kind of dough make little to no sense. Although it has me thinking maybe I am in the wrong business.

I've had a mixed bag of comments about the ending of that last clip. Some like it, some don't. I thought of adding it to sort of tie in the whole idea of why we were going in the first place and also to give some perspective on how amateur our initial effort of approaching the SCTA was.


Really curious to hear about your background and continuing this conversation.

BTW, the bike is getting rebuilt and prepped for an registered trip to Bonneville in 2013. Another kick at a rebuild....again...
