STUNT BIKE - CB360

OK, here is the long over due start to my build thread.

1974 CB360. Some stunter must have owned it because it came with a 12 O'clock bar and a stunt cage.





I originally picked up this CL360 but it didn't have a title. Here in Ohio they seem to think that if you have a bike with no title, then you are a thief. There was no one at any of the title offices that I called or visited that offered even the slightest bit of help. Oh well, $125 lesson learned. It was worth it just for parts.

I wanted to build my own seat. I have worked with fiberglass a little working on race bike fairings. I also have the advantage of working for a company that builds large fiberglass fans.




My first try - I kinda like it and kinda don't.









I also grabbed the drum front wheel and pipes from the CL and put them on the CB.

I tried another design, something different.



It only cost me $20 for the foam and it was enough to do a bunch of designs. Good thing since it is hard to get them symmetrical.

couple layers of glass and topped with some carbon fiber that I had laying around from an old project.



The carbon has some silver in it, but it didn't look as good in person as I thought it would.

I started to polish the front hub before I took the wheel apart. I have done some polishing in the past, but I soon realized why I haven't done more. I am to anal, hate the mess and with two small children in the house, I can't run the machine most of the time I am able to get in the garage and work because that is when they are sleeping.



So I found a guy on craigslist and had it done.











Looked good when put together.
You can also see the wheel. I painted the spokes and cleaned up the rims and nipples. I didn't have any problems with scratching the paint on the spokes that I read about in other build threads. The engine is aluminum and I used some other silver paint for accents on the tappet & point covers as well as the cover on the top and the exhaust things.




the first color I used looked too blue.








Much better, but now the aluminum looks blue - this is only in the photos, not in person.

On the the subject of title, I've never understood why the law makers (in your there parts) are so tough on this. If you'd picked this up here in Australia, say from a wrecker's or just found it in shed, and you wanted to get it registered, in your name, all you have to do is go to your local traffic authority give the them the VIN number (vehicle identification number) they would do a search, and if it doesn't come up as reported stolen or written off it's basically yours to do with what you like (same for cars).

So how much time have you put into so far?

You didn't answer the $64 question - IS that awesome stunt cage and 12 O'clock going back on.  LOL.  I notice that the 12 also doubles as a place to put one foot when doing awesome vertical wheelies.

The polish on those covers is amazing and makes mine look grubby.

I like the seat - just not the carbon.
I already have the bike close to done, I have been working on it all summer and just got it back together to the point of starting it over the weekend.

I did the fiberglass and paint prep this spring when it was still pretty cold out.




I really wanted to paint it myself, but I don't have anywhere to do it. I used to paint for fun before I moved, but my new garage, while 4 times the size, just doesn't lend itself to painting. Our bedroom is over 1/2 the garage and the fumes would kill us (if my wife didn't).

I am spending some time detailing all the parts before they go back on the bike.

I used a paint pen on this - not sure if it will hold up or not.




I had the frame blasted. then I spent a lot of time grinding the ugly welds down and using a little filler to smooth them out. This of course does not lend itself to powder coating, so I will have to live with the chips you get with a painted frame.



one of the first threads I ever came across about cafe bikes showed a way to trim the swingarm down for looks. So I did.

I decided to go with a drag bar over clip-ons or clubmans. I want to have rear sets where the pass pegs mount and I think that it is just too low with clip-ons.

I also like the look of handlebars. I swapped the clip-ons on my Ducati Monster to bars. I also want to keep the bars as clean as possible. That means no turn signals, no starter button (kick only) and aftermarket clutch and brake perches.






As far as paint ideas.

First I thought of using the stock red tank, but it wasn't in the best of shape. Mostly just little scratches, no real dents.

I bought another tank at Mid-Ohio vintage. I think that it is from a CB450. I paid $35 for it. When I got it on the bike, I didn't like the shape as much as the stock one. My wife likes it better.




So I bought a mint on on eBay with a cap for $80 shipped. Same red CB360 as what came with it. I also toyed with using the CL360 tank that I have from the parts bike.
