77 kz650 project has started.
« on: Dec 20, 2011, 20:41:18 »
I bought a kz 650 almost running. I rebuilt carbs and now she is running well. So I tore it apart. I want set of rear controls. Anyone know of which one I should go with. I figure I could use just about any with drum brakes and modify as needed. Also I wanted to know what clip ons may work best. I am 6'1". I was going to go with just standard, but I see that there are companies out there with some adjustment.

GSX-R rearsets work well on a lot of older bikes, they're just so universal and easy to adapt. I've got Ninja 500R rear sets on mine, but I cut the passenger tabs off and welded new tabs in their place, then just drilled the holes in those and mounted. Even disc brake design rear sets can be used for drum rears with very little, if any modification. Look to local junkyards and ebay/craigslist to find someone parting out a bike, or just selling their old ones. Deals can be had.

Great job greaser!  I'd like to hear how you achieved those knee dents?  I have been mulling this over too!

Here it is as a roller. New Chrome shocks on the way. The knee dents were made using a 2" urethane bullet type mallet. Slowly and carefully. Not too bad really.

Just sealed tank with caswells. Now I have decided to let Dan at creative wiring  make. My custom harness. I was going to try it but too many changes. I am moving key to where seat unlock used to be. Also all electronics  will be under hump.  He was great to talk to and look forward to doing business with him.

Looking really great!  I like your colour scheme....  The seat and tank look sweet.

I built up my '78 KZ650 last year, but have it down to the frame for a "re-do".

I'll be watching your progress.

Here is where I am now.  Just got it fired up.  Still work to be done.  But are you ever really finished?
