Been Around the Block
Hello hello,

I suppose its time for me to start a build thread on this here project of mine.

Its a 79 cb650, pretty much stock except the lovely "exhaust" (sigh), and probably a few other things.

My plan for it is, you guessed it! One of them coffee ricer bikes

This bike is my second build, as I just finished a 77 xs650, and got fully and completely obsessed with the idea of building bikes of my own. The bike will have the following

Homemade fibreglass seat/bubble, containing all the electronics and battery, on a steel seat pan, an open rear triangle for a nice clean look, pods or vel. stacks, hopefully a brake upgrade, shock swap in the rear, some shnazzy new paint, and what ever else I feel like tickling my pickle with.

My aim is a clean, bare bones, lightweight, fun as hell canyon carver. Hopefully that isnt to hard on the eyes as well..

So here are some pictures to get the process rollin..

Tomorrow, Ill get some pictures of the seat pan/ cowl mock up, and maybe start grinding some shit off the frame.

Carbs are now off, airbox is out, and wiring is starting to get sorted.. AKA I removed the elephant trunk of a wiring harness, and started the labeling process.

On a side note, background about the bike:

I bought it about 3 hours after it went online, ripped out on my xs to some farm in the middle of buttfuck nowhere, and handed some sad little man $580. The dude looked like he was about to cry. The bike is in great shape on top, paints perfect (untill i destroy it!) but underneath there is the usual, surface rust, half assed fixing jobs, and the like. The PO said it runs, but cylinder 2 doesnt fire. I never heard it or fired it up before i tore in.

Update:

So here is what I got done yesterday,

Made a quick seat pan, ground down the frame so the pan sits flush, And mounted the pan with flush mounted bolts.

I also mocked up the headlight/ears, dropped the front end down a wee bit (bring the hate bitches!), and started on a wee little bit of hand polishing on the cases. Today im taking the day off (long week at my REAl job) but tomorrows game on. Tomorrow I am starting on the fibreglass seat, hopefully figure a way to mount the battery to the pan, and MAYBE if i feel so inclined, ill begin wiring.

I got the $6 wiring diagrams off ebay, made for honda 4's but for the 550 and 750. I think it will work with a bit of modification.

Basically, the battery will be hiddin under the cowl, and the wiring will run underneath.

I also ordered my pods, clip ons, signals, some pimpin translucent red fuel line, and a few other tid bits, all from Dime City. (thanks guys!)

As long as it all goes as planned with the wiring/pods, I will then grind off the remaining tabs in the triangle, for a nice wide open view to THE OTHER SIDE!

How are you planning on attaching the fiberglass to the metal plate? I'm gathering ideas cause I'm currently stuck on mine.

Another update, Ive been busy

I spent hours on getting my engine pulled, cleaned, polished, and painted, and back in

Cleaned, sanded, and painted swingarm, cleaned the shocks

Cleaned, sanded, and painted rear wheel.

Also made some more progress on the seat. Damn its taking ages, sanding resin sucks! And my fibreglassing job was very rough, but its coming together. Fuggers, Im not exactly sure how im going to mount it yet. Ill let you know when I sort it out.

And im just messing around with bars up there, not sure on if ill run them there or not. Will probably be twichy as hell.

Cable routing is gunna need to be worked on as well

wow this build came together purdy quick. Not sure I'm a fan of the vinyl covering the fiberglass seat. Personally, I would have left it painted. Bike looks clean though. It has a nice stance. Are you keeping that seat pad?
