We have a Scitsu tacho on a race bike and I love it do death but I hate the non replaceable battery and wild swings. For any bike with normal (non magneto) ignition, I'd rather run almost any cheapish electronic tacho that takes its feed from the coils.  They do look the part though.....

Yea I was reading about what a pain they are when he battery pack goes out, so I'm taking a chance on the B1 thats powered by the battery on the bike, I didn't find too much data on them outside AJS's site but I talked to Chris Kinsey about it a bit and he seemed to feel it was just a preference in weight as far as having a batt on board or not, so I'm giving it a shot.  And..   this little ( and I do mean LITTLE gem just arrived today )



Im still in awe at how small it really is, 13v 120CCA 6ah, I am running a boyer so im a bit leary of it's needs, but I plan to put all my lights on a separate switch so I can engage the ignition and not draw anything away while I kick away to my hearts content, only other thing that I'll have on it now will be the tach.

Yea I looked at a few of the other options too but honestly I saw one of the Scitsu's on a bike that one of our local shops put together and just couldn't resist.. I think that one is about a month or so out as far as getting here.

Anyhow, off to see if I can get these cylinders on without breaking a ring

Ok finally got the cylinders on, found an extra set of experienced hands to help me out before i started breaking rings . And, seeing as I was having a hard time finding a ring compressor some improvisation was required.




Note: thats the old piston that had a valve seize ..

And Finally.... after much prodding stabbing with screwdrivers and cursing and yelling..



just need to get pushrods and tubes on slap the head back on there and get her in the frame

Lumpy looking pistons. Are they stock Daytona or aftermarket? It's decades since I owned one of those bikes and I sure as heck don't remember exactly what the piston crowns looked like.

Stock Daytona's 9:1 ratio, I think there is even some that are 9.5:1 but i can't recall which model year etc it was, but yea these are the stock ones, I managed to find some NOS hepolite pistons for this go around too, fortunetly R also has a hotter cam stock too, certainly makes my life a bit easier thats for sure, nice to have a couple of easy wins in the bag.

No they are 3/4 haven't gotten a chance to upgrade much on the motor at this point mostly just refurbishing right now and once its running well start doing things one small upgrade at a time mostly just for cost reasons.

Sadly I just had to pull the cylinders back off the tappet blocks were slightly out of alignment and throwing off the pushrod tubes so they will need to come out and be realigned and drifted back in. Not sure how I missed that before getting the rings into the cylinders but such is life. Hopefully by this weekend I can have it corrected and the motor put back together and ready to sit in the frame.. hopefully.

 

Hard to see in the pic but the block is raised just a bit up front and flush in the back creating an angle on the tubes not by much but enough to cause a problem.

Well we might have gotten the tappet blocks sorted, I'll have a better idea when i can get a buddy over to help me finagle the rings back into the cylinders.

In the mean time I figured I'd make some progress and make a mudguard to go up under the seat. This is my first attempt using fiber glass, still need to trim this and sand it and such, but it's a start and a heck of a lot lighter than the metal version I have.





Also started getting the front fender cut down and lined up, just need to make a mount for it now .. well and paint and finish the edges, forward motion none the less.

Started trimming and sanding today, still a long way to go but it's a start.


And this is the idea, just an out of view barrier to go under the seat cowl to keep the crud from flinging off the tire into everything else.

Well I scored a tank, not too much clean up to be done on it mainly just some mounting overall pretty clean inside.  Also a plug i tried to create for a seat, kinda wonky so I doubt I'll use it, but it was a good initial learning experience.

Well it's been a bit since i've updated I figure it's time..

 Some goodies that have come in:


Finally got the motor back together after the issue I had with my tappet blocks.



Snazzy new amals, I know I know the whole debate about stacks and how they should be track use only (I have some on order from steadfast with screens but they aren't too much bigger than these palstic jobs that come from amal) It's not a daily rider and the intent is to a`have a street legal bike that is a blast to ride on track days.. I know the risks im taking them and will deal with the consequences.



And with side panel and oil tank , and seat cowl (seat is a work in progress to get the fit just right..)



And with muffler zip tied to the frame, it will have to kick out away from the bike more that was just for the sake of mocking it up, it'd prob boil my oil as close as it is in the mock up you get the idea though.

All and all it's actually starting to look like a motorcycle again..

Thanks, still a long long way to go but i def feel better seeing the motor back in the frame .. i guess it's just something about it looking like a motorcycle.. before it's all said and done frame will be a bright Ducati Red and the body work will be white with a red stripe.. such is the goal anyway been talking to a vinyl shop that does vintage racing decals to cut a  "500cc" emblem to replace the 360 tank badges planning on encasing the vinyl in clear hobby resin used it before in some other more art driven projects to create the disc as it were before mounting them on the benalli tank.

Good stuff man tiny Red hint (Rosso Corsa).....I'm about to tear my engine out and i'm up in the air about color right now, Not sure if I want to Do Red on this one or not......Thats cool your creating badges i should probably try and think that far ahead as well....Found these little guys today if they weren't $5 each I would have bought more I wish I knew what they were called

That'd be 3059R's then ?

Nice build BTW - brings back some memories, although my particular poison were the 500 Grand Prix engines. Somewhere in the loft there's a set of drilled, narrowed and polished timing gears from a 500 !
